'Dega fans and the 'big one'
Chad here again. Reading through one of our post-race features, Race Rewind, I came upon a paragraph David Poole wrote about a family at the race and something that happened right in front of him. If that isn't one of the funniest dang things I have ever read... At least the kid has the support of his family.
Also wanted to comment on Sunday's 'Big One'. I'm reading a lot about who's fault it is. It's Jimmie's fault, the DEI fans cry. It's Jr.'s fault, say the Hendrick backers. In my opinion, there's a multitude of factors at fault here.
First, it is clear Jr. bumped Mike Wallace and Wallace got a bit loose. Second, it is clear from the tape that Jimmie Johnson slid up a bit and made a bad situation worse. Third, and most importantly, NASCAR has created this monster we call 'The Big One'.
When Big Bill built this track in the late 60s, drivers boycotted. Senor France put a stop to that. In more recent years, efforts to make racing at Talladega safer has brought us such things as restrictor plates, roof and spoiler wickers and smaller gas tanks. More drivers are walking away from the big one, but owners are throwing millions of dollars away.
To make money, drivers need to win. To win, they need to be up front. To be up front, they have to knock the crap out of each other. That's safe, huh?
Drivers were warned before the race about bump-drafting. That worked, huh?
Bottom line is, most drivers hate plate racing, but there is nothing they can do about it. NASCAR has the final say. And as long as that is the case, it won't change. The big one will get bigger, costs will go up, but we'll still see four plate races each year.

Question. What are the favorite races for fans? I think Daytona, Bristol and Talladega consistently rank at the very top. Why? Excitement. I have seen a talladega race that ended without the big one. This was less then 10 years ago. It was a great race, very exciting, some very close calls and a great race. The reason. The drivers were actually respectful of each other during this race and the banging and bumping didn't start til about 20 laps to go. Drivers need to realize that banging and beating on each other does no good and can only cause a crash with no benefit. I agree with Mike. Higher banks on each race track will make for incredible racing and passing.

Why can't the drivers and teams just take it and race? What happened at Talladega was Jimmie Johnson swerved Mike Wallace - how are the rules responsible for that?
NASCAR created this monster? How? What we have at Talladega is the SOLUTION - we have real racing there as opposed to this boring strung out nonsense we have almost everywhere else.
Lonnie advocates lower banking - why? Fontana and Michigan are boring; no one can race; drivers die at places like those - no one even stubs a toe at Talladega.
What is really needed is to put the restrictor plates on all the tracks, put the roof spoiler on all the tracks, put the 7-inch spoiler with wicker on, and put on harder tires with a wider footprint for better grip and better durability.
We need to get over the overrated "big one," because a crash is a crash, and it is the little ones, never the "big one" that cause problems. Racing is about 50 lead changes among the entire field, never about spreading out the cars.

Is there no way to fix the plates, allow more aspiration so that the drivers get some acceleration without taking off like space shuttles? Isn't the problem the restrictor plates and how much air gets to the carburetor? It seems that allowing just 5% more air in there may allow a little more throttle when it's needed.

There's an easy solution for "Plate Racing" (if you want to call it that). Flatten out Daytona and Talledega. Indy's 2.5 mile and we don't run plates. Michigan and California are 2 mile track and we don't run plates. Why? The banking isn't as steep as these two dinosaurs. In order to seperate the cars in these packs, we need to get the drivers to lift off the throttle SOMEWHERE, ANYWHERE around the track. This simple little act, will separate the pack as somebody will lift later and get back in the throttle sooner that somebody else. This will spread out the cars. At these two places, they just don't have to do it.
The question is why won't NASCAR fix the tracks instead of trying to come up with a solution to fix the cars? Easy. Money. Both tracks are "owned" by ISC which is controlled by the France Family. This is the biggest underlying problem in NASCAR today. You can't have the same folks that sanction the races and hand out the dates own 1/2 the speedways. It has caused problems in the past (Texas) and is going to cause problems in the future.
This is just my opinion, but until the cars are forced to let off at these two tracks, we'll continue to see equipment torn up. Is another driver going to have to be killed in one of these wrecks in order for NASCAR to get the picture?

Chad, great guest post you made. The blame game is a joke. So is Jimmy Spencer's remarks about respecting one another and blaming the drivers not restrictor plates. At least two drivers in post race interviews stated that you can't drive nose to tail, side by side for 400 miles and be perfect for every mile.. paraphrasing here. Accidents are going to happen and if a RP race ends without "The Big One" that will be the headlines of the day. A bump and a wiggle caused all those sardines to jump from the can. Sad.
And Chad if you are reading this.. just for laughs and giggles can't we get a blog added to ThatsRacin that supports Jeff Gordon? huh huh can we please can we huh???? I'll shine your shoes and dust your name plate!!!

Out of curiosity I just went back over to Rantville.
You can also ask why he deleted my comment about misrepresenting the quoted headline.
Again, his place, he can do what he wants. And it's obviious he desires, or needs, to operate an echo chamber that only reflects what he deems to be the truth.
BTW I can only guess what my offense was other than I provided the correct quote of the article's headline vice what he changed it to so he could make some kind of "point."
Very sad and not very reflective of That's Racin' as a whole.

Kevin, good point but in reality, never happen, the sponsors pay too much to have their nameplate displayed on Sunday.
If any team did what you suggest the first calls they would receive would be from their primary sponsor that could contain a threat to pull the millions they spend.

Nice to read something sane on the "plate" issue. I just left Rantville and the hate, bile and offensive language is way, way out of line.
As a professional maybe you can bend his ear a little. Not censor, just tone it down a bit.
You may also remind him when you place something in quotes it means a direct quote, not the way he desires to twist it. I refer to his illogical rant about a NASCAR.com article about Hendricks current dominance in plate races.
Having said that, I understand it's his place, and his opinion. But it does reflect on That's Racin' as a whole. By twisting a quote to suit his needs is frankly dishonest.
More to the point: Obviously NASCAR must get "of the stick," as they say, and get the "engine of the future" off the dynos and onto the track. It appears the Chevy version will be tested late this year but Ford for whatever reason has been dragging their feet.
Added to that are four Senators (yes Senators, as in US type, as if NASCAR needs more politics!) that may throw a curveball that may effect the timeline for a new engine (not to mention more money spent).

The sport has become too competitive and expensive to have so much machinery torn up as seen Sunday.

Just for once I'd like to see a driver/team protest one of these tracks. I know I know, can't be done, points, sponsors, blah blah blah. I'm not saying don't show up, but what would happen if the entire Hendrick team, Rousch team, Childress, or any other team qualified, ran one lap and then parked it. They would still get some points and not tear up their stuff. Of course I'm sure France and Helton would use their dictatorship to penalize the team somehow.
