Is it a deal now?
Kevin Harvick was dominating Saturday night's Chevy 400 at Richmond in one of Richard Childress Racing's Chevrolets. Later he battled Greg Biffle, in a Ford, for the lead.
Not to pilfer a tagline, but it makes you wonder - whatever ends up happening Saturday night - if next week isn't a good time to make a deal.
Harvick owned and won Friday night's Emerson Radio-sponsored NASCAR Busch Series race at the Confederacy's capital city track, ran off with the pole for the Cup race, then pretty much took off when the green flew Saturday night.
The driver has been complaining pretty publicly about what he's been driving, asking for - no, insisting upon - improvements at RCR before he'll talk about renewing his contract there.
Whoa. This just in: Where you and I work ain't all we think it should be either.
I don't have any idea what their schedules look like, but if I'm on the Richard Childress side of the table and I'm meeting this next week with one helluva driver named Harvick - or his people - I'm feeling pretty froggy and wanting to ask.
OK, what else is it you want?

Well, as expected, RCR has exercised its option to keep Harvick for next year, but there is NO new contract, so don't over-read this. There is a long way to go before they decide if they want to stay together!

Point taken David.

I've said this all along, and I still believe it: I'm pretty sure Harvick has explored all of the possibilities of talking to people inside the team, before he even thinks about talking to the media. He must feel his concerns and ideas are not being given a fair hearing, so he goes to the media to air his views. I really don't believe he would run straight to the media, especially since he is also a team-owner, so he also knows what its like to be on the other side of the fence.

First off, you will not see anyone in Cup car with a 3 on it in the near future. I have been a Harvick fan since he was in the Busch Series before Big E was killed so what I say about the issues there are not pointed as dislike but the problems are on both sides of the street. Kevin's crew chief was HIS choice not Richard's. If the car isn't right then there are communication problems between Kevin and the crew. HE is a very talented driver and maybe he isn't getting what he wants, MAYBE he is telling them in the way he needs to get his pont across? Don't use the media Kevin, use your head and talk to the team....

I think one of the things that Harvick has been most concerned about this year has been his team. They do seem to shoot him in the foot sometimes, whether its a bad stop or something to do with the car itself. They need some of that '03 magic.
As far as Harvick himself goes, how could they replace him? I mean, who could they possibly get that is better, and who could possibly do better in that equipment? He's able to save ok finishes from poor cars. He never gives up even if the situation looks hopeless.
Like I say, lets hope for a return of some of that 03 magic.

If you thought Harvick was going to win because he sat on the pole, you don't understand impound racing. It was a testiment to his driving that he stayed in front as long as he did. His car was tight from the drop of the green flag and he could not run anywhere near the bottom of the race track. As the track got tighter and tighter, it exceeded the adjustment capabilities of his race car. And unlike the Busch race, there were an additional 150 laps for the cup race. It was those laps when the track was at its tightest.

Do you think the driver forgot how to race the car in the middle of the race. Maybe his crew chief was not able to keep up with the track changes. Maybe Kevin would say that is what he wants.

Just goes to show that "it" has always been there, just waiting to be stomped and squeezed into a fine, fine wine... and time will only make it better, and better, and better 8-)

Harvick is the best driver Childress has got. He should insist on his pick of crew chief and a number change to... 3.
Anything short of that, he's driving a Yates engine on a Roush chassis and in the chase with the Smirnoff purple and Sharpie Black.
