Hiatus Interruptus - Cheers and Jeers is back
By Bob Henry
ThatsRacin.com Editor
Color me amazed. No, make that Amazed Silver Metalflake with 16 primer coats of flat brown.
The headline, we hope, will ease many of the irrational-sounding fears about the future of the Cheers and Jeers contributions at ThatsRacin.com. But maybe not.
I’m amazed at how many of you have made the transition - and how easily you seem to have done so - from “hiatus” to “termination.” Maybe it’s just as part of how the Internet has changed our lives. People who don’t particularly care to wait no longer have to wait. The very second the urge to yell “Fire!” in a crowded theater or blog comes to mind, you can go right ahead and yell it.
And I’m amazed at how routinely some of you can fire off an angry e-mail, demanding to know the rationale – nay, every nuance – of the decision-making process at a company that does not employ you. How does that approach succeed for you where you work?
When you were passed over for a promotion, were you able to send an outraged e-mail to the CEO or general manager, demanding to know what the hell he or she was thinking? Or the last time you got a divorce, were you successful in getting all of the information you demanded from your Ex’s attorney?
Didn’t think so.
So why do some people seem to think e-mails or blog comments – even nasty ones that have already made the headlong leap off the summit of Mount Conclusion – will be any different?
I’m amazed by some of the invective directed my way. Doesn’t hurt my feelings, but the irrational nature of some of it is totally beyond weird. Be sure and say hello for us when you next communicate with those alien spacecraft three galaxies away, will you?
Turning away briefly from amazement, I suppose I should be content that, at least, you didn’t ridicule the myriad flaws in my golf game or say anything negative about my dogs. I know they love me in spite of everything I might do or you might say. And when you start bad-mouthing my puppies the way you have me over the last couple of days, that’s when I get will mad.
Like I said, right now I’m still just amazed.
Face it: Your outrage makes it difficult for any of us to take your concerns as seriously as you might like.
And even if we aren’t going to invite each and every one of you into the office to help us chart our course – and what business would? – might I suggest that some of you just calm down a little bit?
It would be neat to try and turn this into a story of an outraged writer and her fans working themselves into a frenzy and winning out over evil, but it’s hardly that.
We have had some things come up. Nothing more or less. People will, from time to time, disagree. That will happen at work. Happens with lovers and families all the time. And, sure, it’s annoying to see one view of our family business spread about in such a casual and cavalier way.
But everyone has his or her own ethical barometer. And with the Internet, sometimes people don’t allow themselves time to reflect on their actions. They mash the button and there it is.
But, here are a couple of things that have been sadly missing amid all of the the wailings, some facts. The writer remains under contract with our company. The people who run the site have done precisely what they said they would do in the editor’s note posted on Monday: They have interrupted the writer’s musings long enough to carefully consider where to best display them.
As the note also suggested, blog comments have been a concern. Oh, and thanks again to so many of you for driving those concerns home so articulately since the hiatus note went up. Special thanks, of course, would be due to Veronica, Eric and others who – for whatever reasons – don’t use their real names and e-mail addresses in their correspondence.
Is it easier to yell “Fire” if you think you’re doing it anonymously?
We can not spend any more time than we already do in policing the comments on this writer’s contributions. It just isn’t possible.
So we have moved this much-ballyhooed contribution into a space where we have moderators in place and where the comment function is far better than on the existing blog platform. Many of you have said that the interactivity is important to you and we hear you over the din.
You will need to register to access the contributions and to join in the discussions. It will take about the same amount of time as signing up to post on the old platform.
We hope for your continued participation.

We hope Bob Henry see's what a doofus he has been, aw well... Only some of the former posters here have moved to your stupid forum, beacause, it is just that... a stupid forum. Those that moved there will move on, when the times come to do so.That place is crawling with the likes of you, and it is a long way from where most of us want to be. Why don't you just stay in your little basement that you enjoy, and play with your own friends. dolt !!!!!!

I FOLLOWED CAROL TO THIS SITE WHEN SHE CAME HERE. IN THE PROCESS I FOUND THE FORUM TO MY LIKING AND THIS IS PRETTY MUCH THE ONLY SITE I USE WITH THE EXCEPTION OF TTR A PRIVATE BOARD THAT I VISIT EVERY DAY BECAUSE OF MY FRIENDS THERE.
IT IRKS ME TO NO END THAT C AND J WAS MOVED INTO OUR FORUM AREA. NOW WE HAVE TO PUT UP WITH MORE FLAMERS AND HATE MONGERS.
I AGREE WITH MOST OF THE POSTERS THAT CAROL SHOULD HAVE HER OWN AREA AND A DIFFERENT SITE. IT COULDN'T HAPPEN TO FAST FOR ME. I HOPE BOB GIVES HER A RELEASE AND HER BIAS BUTT IS DOWN THE ROAD.

OK. "Cheers and Jeers" was removed (and eventually moved). Why? It seems that the problem was the level some (one?) posters sank to in impersonating others, being hateful, using objectionable language, etc. I agree, something needed to be done. In fact many of the posters here were asking that it be done.
Has the move to the forums accomplished that? It seems so. I am impressed with the moderators there (ib007 in particular)in addressing issues and keeping a calm and inviting atmosphere. It is harder (not impossible) to post under multiple names and posters who abuse the privilage are warned and removed, apparently.
So why are so many (including me) still disgruntled and put off by what has happened? Haven't we got what we asked for? Well, maybe.
But what about the way it was done? It just doesn't make sense to me. I asked before, but didn't receive a response. Why was the column removed while the decision was made on where to put it. If the comments were the problem, it was not necessary to remove "Cheers and Jeers" while allowing people to comment on an aritcle that wasn't there.
The requests to move or moderate the column better were made over several weeks. Why did a brand new column have to be yanked in order to make a decision? Again, doesn't make sense.
And now, we have "Cheers and Jeers" back. We can comment (except for those with technical problems, sorry tbfka#5). So why do I still have a bad taste in my mouth about all of this? Well, there is one overriding question remaining, sort of the elephant in the room that hasn't been asked.
WHERE IS CAROL?
Throughout this whole thing, she has been completely silent (at least publicly). She has not replied to comments or said ANYTHING. Has she been banned from posting after her column comes out? Has she been asked not to share with us? Will she be replying again in the future?
I miss her and hope things get back to normal soon.

Sharon,
I think what you are asking for is what is in the Infield, 3rd "column". It contains the "New Editor's Note" and "Editor's Note". The Editor's Note is what was posted when Carol's column was pulled. It is only that one paragraph.

Question: Does anyone know where the original post is, the one that "explains" the hiatus or whatever? Im curious about it. I did not read that when it originally posted, just the one that Bob Henry posted here on Friday.
Posted by: sharon | Sep 16, 2006 10:35:40 AM
Well dude... we are hoping that she moves too, just so we can go back to friendly territory.., and takes our multitude of fans with her.... can't wait.

I do not know what Carol or other bloggers said to get C&J put on hiatus I was just stating that I, for one, would not miss her musing. Let's hope she moves back to the other site with the horrible black back ground and red script so all the CE fans will be happy as will those of us here before she moved to town.

Ok BOB!!!....iy is NOW Friday Sept 14, @ 9:19 EDT...I signed up, so I could read Carol's post...I was able to veiw a list of post's ONCE...I couldn't read anything, and NOTHING had Carol or Cheers and Jeers in the name...NOW all I have been getting IS "Page cannot be displayed" in your "Forumn" section...Did you know that in any business, when you do a "disservice" to a customer, only 10% will respond, the other 90% will go away...but they will also tell aproximatly 6 others...so what I'm seeing here is just the "tip" of the "Iceberg"...I just can't picture you standing on the railing..."I'm on top of the world"
Posted by: Tbfka#5 | Sep 15, 2006 9:28:23 PM
Well, Octane20... you make your point, HOWEVER, it is still no answer to the 'removal' issue, which is my whole point.
You, and many others, can ramble 'ad nauseum' about who got P.O. at any particular answer, however, the point is that just because YOU were upset, or, 'Joe Blow' was upset, is no reason for the change.
Quite honestly, I think that anything that you, me, and all the others posters, agreed, or, did not agree, on, has absolutley NOTHING to do with the situation being as it is.
This is an issue that we posters, in our fanatical desire to prove that our driver is the best, (Go, Mikey, Go !!), actually have nothing to do with.
If you feel that the removal has anything to do with what you posted above, you are mistaken... The same as most other posters here are saying that it anything to do with particular items related to them.. CJ and his (stupid) H.C. comment thinks that is the issue... WRONG !!!!!!.. as are many others...
I do not choose to argue with the posters here about who said or didn't say what... My point is that probably by Monday, this particular posting will not be here ( Feel better, Bob H.???), and then the only contact that we have is through the other site, hosted by... " Guess who ???".. So... Bob Henry, The Editor, wins... FOR NOW !!!!!!!!!!!!!

I quit reading Carol's musings at the end of last season when I made the mistake of disagreeing with her on something. Her entry was titled, "Move over Court Jester Your Not the King". She thought KB should not have raced Mark Martin as hard as he did on a restart when MM was the leader and KB was the first car one lap down. She went on to say if it were not for the chase format KB would not be in the top ten at season's end. She has the right to her opinion of whether or not a teammate should race another as KB did. We went back and forth on the subject most of the week after the event and I ended it a challange of an apology if KB did not make the top ten using the old points systems. Carol did accept but has yet to issue said apology. She was so wrong on the issue of KB not making the top ten at season's end using the old points systems that as we all know KB sat out the last two races of last season and still finished tenth using the old points system. She is so biased and closed minded that she hurts her credibility when agruing for her stance. I skip most of her writings but she shared "The Infield" with others and I wanted to see what the big to do was all about. I just stated my opinion about not missing her writings. Unlike you, I directed nothing at anyone just stated that the headache would not be worth the site hits to me. Thanks for the box, Bob.

Well, Alas and Alack, fellow Cheers n Jeers fans.. It seems that this site, as we have known it, will end shortly.
It is true that Carol's COLUMN has been relegated to some basement somewhere in the forum section of ThatsRacing, and we have been invited to participate at that site. Some of Carol's fans have decided to follow that route, and others have not. Both parties have excellent reasons for taking the route that they have chosen. Personally, I went to that site, didn't like what I saw, and left. Perhaps premature on my part, but it was my choice. Others have found a place to fit in there, and that is good. I can peruse the comments as they are posted there, as a 'guest', and have noticed that it is not that far removed from what was here previously, subject to a few different rules to follow.
Since I, and some others, have chosen not to follow that route, well, sobeit for us. I do not agree, as you may already surmise, with either the cause for this rift, or, the new site. That is certainly not a reference to those that post there. Quite honestly, after reading the numerous posts there, it seems that they have had their own problems with phony posters. My issue is that Carol's COLUMN was removed from here for no valid reason, other than Bob Henry's ego, to prove that he is the Editor.
If you review the posts at 'that' site today, you will find that one made comment about deb's post being '500...Yahoo', which makes me think that the number 500 is rare at that site. It is very obvious that the post count escalated only due to the posters from CnJ going there. Many of Carol's previous COLUMN'S generated 800 plus posts, and sometimes over 1000. My point is that Bob Henry knew many would go there, and the total hits for the site would not change, and that makes him look like he knew what he was doing. Well.. stick a feather in the dude's cap, but that ain't rocket science.
My whole point of this ramble is twofold:
a) Carol got shafted by ThatsRacing, not by anything other than EGO, and should search out a new site. One that will allow her to write freely, and then allow us to comment, at will.
b) It is most likely that after this weekend, perhaps Monday, this particular blog will be pulled. At that point, all former posters to Carol's site will have to join the other site, or, read only as a guest, but not comment. In either case, each time that we read, Bob Henry gets a 'hit' that is not deserved. Hope that the non-members remember to wait until they think it is posted before checking. Do not want to give Bob Henry one more 'hit' than required.
I fully understand those that have opted to go to the other site, and, in fact, reading from the outside, it looks friendly. HOWEVER, the whole process is a power play that shafted the writer that brought us here, because she told it as she saw it. Agree or Not Agree was an option that was always open to the posters, as was expressing their thoughts. It's simply a shame that it has come down to this.
Have a nice day.

Why are you here then, Octane 20 dude ??? If you don't like her COLUMN .. ( not a blog)... then why read it?
Personally, I agree with part of your comment.. Carol should move somewhere, just to get away from Bob henry and the TR site
