About Bob
When I started getting serious about working I chose daily newspapering.Part of that was because Richard Nixon's Watergate scandal was breaking about the same time the last rock 'n' roll band I'd played in was breaking up. The other part was that my brother was leaving his summer job at the local paper and returning to school. Armed with the knowledge that the newsroom surely had an opening, I hounded the city editor until he relented and hired me. Two and a half years later, I had his job.
I hung in at that little daily, then tried a handful of other, similar papers before I moved to bigger dailies.
That career path eventually landed me at The Charlotte (N.C.) Observer where the work was plentiful and the schedule sucked. But I can't slam it too hard. Working at the Observer helped me buy a lot of golf balls and the other necessities of life. And my interest in - OK, fascination with - auto racing helped me land this job.
Yes, it's one of the best I've ever imagined and is surely the very best job I've ever held.
And, no, you can't have it. Sorry.
