Hi,
On the Wendy Norris/Venturini question - apparently she did get a divorce (AND her father got his way on the name)! I picked this up from Wikipedia:
"Wendy was married to Chad Norris, jackman of Nextel Cup Series driver Ryan Newman, from 2001 to 2005."
Thought you'd like to know.

I agree with Kathy, the HANS device would NOT have made a difference to Billy. However, there will be another safety device on the market in December, which offers protection against all 5 types of neck injuries (as opposed to 1 offered by Hutchins and HANS).
Watch this space.

I realize that NASCAR can't *over protect* the drivers without causing problems, but I think it's something they will look into.

Correct comment Melli. As I hold a Bachelor of Science degree in Occupational Safety & Health, let me debunk a common place theology that all accidents are preventable. They are not. These big corporations that have these outstanding safety programs in place would like for the average person to think like that.
The bottom line is that, no matter what, as long as the "man/machine interface" continues in our society; then there will always be hazards and accidents that occur.
I would like to think that the possibility of another NASCAR driver being killed is virtually eliminated by the use of the HANS device, but, that isn't the case. I still ponder what the outcome would have been if Dale Earnhardt had been wearing such a device at the time of his accident. I still believe the g-force was so great that it wouldn't have made a difference.
I hope NASCAR continues the development and testing of safety related equipment so as that we don't lose anymore people like Dale Earnhardt, Adam Petty, Kenny Irwin, Blaise Alexander and Tony Roper.

When you have side to side blunt force at a any speed your going to have dire consinquences with or with out the Hans or Hutchens. It's a safe guard used to help prevent head and neck injuries, it's not going to *hurt poof* any driver.
It's used to *help* prevent head injury and thats it, no more no less.
It's auto racing and injury will happen thats part of it. Nascar can't *over protect* the drivers....you do that and that will cause more harm than good. :)

Safety in auto racing is important and I certainly Mr. Venturini has a full recovery. On the other hand, if NASCAR takes it too far and tries to ensure total safety in auto racing they might as well take the drivers out and put remote control electronics and servos in the cars.
Speaking of The Venturinis, last year while watching an ARCA race the announcers mentioned the fact that Papa Venturini was a bit upset at the daughter Wendy Norris(Who was a pit reporter)for taking her husband's name since the Venturini name was SO well known in the racing world. I notice this year that she is now going by Wendy Venturini. Wonder if she divorced or did papa get his way? Hmmmm.....
