Coo Coo Marlin loses his battle
Please keep the Marlin family in your thoughts and prayers.
Coo Coo Marlin, father of NASCAR Nextel Cup driver Sterling Marlin, passed away early Sunday in his long battle against lung cancer.
Sterling Marlin left Watkins Glen late Thursday when he got the call that his father was gravely ill. David Stremme got the call to practice the car and qualify if necessary until they heard from Sterling.
The news on Saturday had seemed to be better, Coo Coo had stabilized, but they said the next 12 hours would be critical. Unfortunately, he took a turn for the worse and died early Sunday morning. He had been battling lung cancer for quite some time.
Scott Pruett was to be standing by just in case and he will drive the #40 this weekend for Marlin. No word yet on if Marlin will be back for next Sunday or if they will need to find a replacement for him, but it would be completely understandable if he didn't race next weekend also.
Coo Coo Marlin was a respected member in the NASCAR family and although he never won an actual points race, he was considered a contender. The picture above is of the three generations of Marlins, from left to right Steadman Marlin, Sterling Marlin and Coo Coo Marlin.
The Marlin family asks that in lieu of flowers, that well-wishers send a donation to the American Lung Association in Coo Coo's name.
My thoughts and prayers go out to the Marlin family.

Even though it has been almost a month since CooCoo"s passing, I still feel for the Marlin family. The next few months will be extremely hard, but I m praying for God's strength to carry them through. I will always be a Marlin fan....following Sterling and his family. I sure will be lost without Sterling in the #40. Bless you Sterling......in everything you do.!

I knew Coo Coo. I was a "track brat" at the Nashville Fairgrounds speedway where both he and Sterling raced (and Sterl got his 3 track champoinships.)Coo Coo seemed like a 3rd grandaddy to me. He was wise but impish. He took the sport seriously, but had fun while he did it. He raced hard, and yet was gentle to those around him. He was obviously the very best mentor Sterling could have ever had. It's so sadly ironic that he and Miss Eula Faye were both taken by cancer. But I'm glad his hard battle is over. He's having fun where he is right now. I bawled when my mother told me the news. All I could think about was Coo Coo picking me up and twirling me around. Or how he would take me over to the concession stand and buy me Snickers bars whenever I got a little too under Sterlin's feet. (He used to drop the "g" in his name back then.)God, I'm gonna miss him. He was a sweet, sweet man. (Well, at least to women. He could be a hellraiser if you were a man who crossed him! LOL)
Sterlin, Miss Paula, Steadman, and Sutherlin, I love you all, and I'm sending you all the strength you'll need to get through this. Coo Coo will never leave you—he'll always be with us all.

My heart goes out to Sterling and his family. Lung cancer claims so many lives every year and hit home last September when my ex's father died at 51 yrs old after being diagnosed 6 mos before. My thoughts are with Sterling and his family at this time of great sorrow.

My condolences to the Marlin family. I, not too long ago, lost a family member to cancer and it is very hard to watch them go through what they do and not be able to do anything for them. I know that it is painful now for those he left behind, but he is no longer suffering. You will always love and miss them, but you don't have to watch them suffer anymore.
They are in my thoughts and prayers.

Well said, Marc.
I'm glad that Sterling and the rest of the family got to be with Coo Coo at the end. I didn't have that opportunity when my father passed away unexpectedly ten years ago and I still regret it. Prayers to the family and Coo Coo's friends; may they find comfort in this time of grief.

Do you people really HAVE to continue the critical remarks on Ganassi, or anyone for that matter, in THIS thread? Geesh, give it a rest!
Some people have no shame... really!
Prayers go out to the Marlin family and I feel confident Coo Coo will wear his Heaven's "rookie stripes" as he did in life, proud, confident, and looking to cross the finish line first.

Wanna know how to make Gannasi Racing competive? Simple, get rid of Felix.

Shannon, your mention of Sterling's numerous problems are exactly why I question the wisdom of Ganassi adding a fourth team when they can barely field three competitive teams.

My thoughts also go out to the Marlin family. It has been a bad year for already with the fiasco that is Ganassi racing, the wrecks and blown engines while losing his ride to an unproven rookie who has never won at Busch because he sells more beer to young people because old people don't drink beer. (see Felix Sabates and Coors Light)
He also lost his father-in-law a few weeks back. It has been a tough year on Sterling already and now this. Keep them in your thoughts and prayers.

Coo Coo had a great life and condolences to the Marlins. I'm not sure how he'll take to a rookie stripe. But he'll be smiling racing the likes of his buds. But I'm sure they'll have a few stories to share.

My thoughts go out also to the Marlin family. Lung Cancer is a very horrible disease and kills many people every year.
