NASCAR - I can understand why Knaus was upset
First, I'd like to say that I'm glad Jimmie Johnson checked out OK at the hospital.
I can understand why Chad Knaus is upset withe the medical team at Indy. I'm not sure if it's all the EMT's fault or maybe the fact that NASCAR needs to better define when a driver needs to go to the infield medical center, but the EMT's should have been able to determine that Johnson needed to be seen.
He crashes hard into the wall, somehow manages to drive down to his pit stall on pit road and has to be pulled from the car while the engine is on fire and smoke is filling the cockpit. It was obvious he was woozy from the wreck and when asked, he said - I don't really remember coming from Turn 4 to the pits, I just remember kind of waking up on pit road the guys pulling me out of the car. So it's all good.
He did say on camera that he was OK, but it didn't look it and I was surprised he was sitting there doing an interview and not being seen by medical personnel. NASCAR said that two EMT's were on site (in the pits) and had talked to Johnson and that he had declined treatment.
I have a few questions about that...
Why did the EMT's just go by what Johnson said?
Did they even evaluate him while they were there?
And why would Knaus be so livid if Johnson had refused treatment? Remember, he was sitting right there with him on the pit wall.
Along the same lines, why is a driver who cannot drive their car off of the track forced to go to the infield care center for a mandatory checkup when he appears to be OK, but Johnson is not made to go after a hard hit like that and says he doesn't remember part of it?
I think NASCAR needs to make the rule more clear on mandatory trips to the care center. It was obvious Johnson needed treatment, an official took him to the infield care center after he sat on the wall for a while, obviously realizing he needed to be seen.
I know not everything is known about what was said, but it was clear that Johnson should be seen and I think NASCAR needs to adjust things, whether it be the rules or just making the rules more clear.
I'm not a Johnson fan, far from it, but I don't like to see any driver get hurt and while Knaus may not have expressed things in a PC manner, he had every right to be upset.
This is just going to help fuel the people who are trying to push for a traveling medical team for the sport.

It was obvious that Johnson should have been seen much earlier than he was and it is not clear why the EMT's didn't identify the need to make him go to the infield care center.
I hope NASCAR and the Indy will review this situation and figure out how to ensure that it doesn't happen again.

All we really know is what we saw on TV, but like you said, when he said he didn't even remember driving to the pits, and I heard on the scanner Chad, or someone, yelling for him to get out of the car as it was on fire. Seems to me, the EMT's were just standing there with their thumbs up their you know where.
Just from JJ's comments alone seems enough to me they should have taken him to the care center. Maybe it is time to have a medical team traveling with the teams, Bill France can afford it. These guys are his bread and butter, that's the least he can do for them. Hell knowing NA$CAR, they will find a way to make the owners pay for it anyway.
