COT Testing at Bristol
COT testing has some drivers surprised. For the most part, the COT got some good comments from drivers for a change, once they were able to actually test them on the track. Everyone expected Jeff Burton to give the car rave reviews since he always pushes for more safety, but they also got some good comments about the car from other drivers, among them, Dale Earnhardt Jr., who was "pleasantly surprised" at how the car handled.
On the other side of the coin we also have the two crashes that tested the car. On day one it was Ward Burton, who completely damaged the splitter and on day two, Clint Bowyer who had significant damage to the splitter after hitting the wall. Bowyer was surprised at the amount of damage to the car. And right now he seems to be the biggest critic and thinks the car should have a stronger body.
And what did he have to say about the upcoming Bristol race?
"I'm afraid it won't be much racing," Bowyer said. "You're racing yourself quite a bit. I'd say there'll be a lot of cars on the inside line at the end of the race with the radiator showing."
I guess we'll have to wait and see how it does, but he seems to think it's going to be a free-for-all. Yikes!
NASCAR is also thinking about pushing up the timetable for the COT, possibly going full-time in 2008 instead of 2009. I think they're jumping the gun a bit, I say wait and see how it does for these 16 races this year, including 5 Chase races, before making any decisions.
Your thoughts?

How are they "jumping the gun" when any decision on 2008 hasn't been made and in fact Darby's quotes only indicate it's a possibility?
But I guess the overall use of the phrase is correct... someone, has indeed "jumped the gun."
However, Within the first week to ten days after this season is complete NASCAR has to do one of two things. Either toss the whole science experiance in the sh*tcan or use it in all 36 events in 2008.
The idea of another split season using both types of cars does nothing but add to the workload (and cost) to everyone involved.

I disagree with Bowyer in that I suspect Bristol will be so about not grinding off the splitter that teams will take zero chances on setups, drivers will take zero chances on passing, and the cars will prove less than raceable anyway between the poor design of the COT and the generally poor raceability of Bristol.
I will be shocked if NASCAR continues with the COT in 2008 because it has nothing going for it. The key thing about this Bristol test was what was not said - no one said the COT races well.
