Slap on the wrist again for Hendrick Motorsports
NASCAR handed down the penalties for the #24 and #48 infractions at Sonoma. Remember when NASCAR said they were going to be tough? Guess what? Them handed down the same penalties for what they deemed "intentional" that they have handed down earlier in the year for what they saw an "unintentional" infractions.
Gordon and Johnson got docked 100 driver points each, Hendrick got docked 100 owner points and Gordon got docked 100 owner points. Both crew chiefs were fined $100,000 and suspended for six weeks.
That's really going to teach them. Give me a break. NASCAR said they were going to have no tolerance with the COT, so why did two teams with what was deemed by NASCAR as "intentional" get the same penalty as those that were "unintentional", also deemed by NASCAR?
Gordon still has the point lead and Johnson dropped to fifth, but with the new system for the Chase, he's in no danger of not making it either.
And then there's Knaus, the one who has been caught many times over the last few years cheating, you think six weeks off will hurt him? Not hardly, I'm sure he'll be on his cell phone and in contact with the team all the time. I guess getting caught over and over again is OK in NASCAR, especially if your name is Knaus.
They had hinted at possibly more severe penalties, but when it came down to it they caved, as usual. And Hendrick actually has the nerve to say the penalties were "excessive".
Once again, same old thing, they threaten big, but when it comes down to it, they cave.
Your thoughts?

For once they were actually consistent.. Didn't they publish what the penalties were going to be back with the COT came out? So far this year they have stayed consistent for those, shocking!

What if Gordon or Johnson had won the race? Would the penalty have been any different? If not then why even bother penalizing them? With the way the chase works now the points don't matter. It's all about wins and Gordon and Johnson still lead the league in wins and if the chase started today then they would be tied for first no matter where they finished in the points as long as they made the chase. Gordon could skip 3 races and still make the chase.
NASCAR needed to send a stronger message and until they're willing to go the full mile and suspend entire teams, drivers included, as opposed to just crew chiefs, then teams will continue to break the rules because the penalties are still a slap on the wrist.
