Mears to the #5/Dale Earnhardt Jr. to the #25, but will have new number
Hendrick Motorsports has decided that Casey Mears will be moved to the #5 next year and be paired with Alan Gustafson, while Dale Earnhardt Jr. will get the #25, but will have a different number, no announcement about the number yet. Jr. fans will be happy to know that Tony Eury Jr. will move over with him and be his crew chief, while Darian Grubb will move to a competition position within Hendrick Motorsports.
This news may anger some of the Jr. fans. Many weren't happy with the announcement that he was moving over to Hendrick in the first place, but most see the #25 car as the fourth (bottom) car in the Hendrick line, so I'm sure it won't sit well with them either. The move doesn't really surprise me, although I'm sure Jr. fans would have been happier it if was the #5 instead of the #25.
An announcement is expected soon on sponsor and car number.

Number ain't gonna have a thing to do with whether he gets good equipment or support. Believe you me, Rick will make certain Junior has all the assets necessary to make him a viable contender for the Chase in 2008.
Then we'll find out if Junior is the caliber of driver that will win a championship.

I don't think there's that big of a difference between the 5 and 25 teams. The 24-48 shop is far superior to the 5-25 shop. Unless Hendrick can better merge the 4 teams together I think there will still be a noticable separation between the performance of what I call the two multi-car teams that Rick Hendrick owns - the 'A' team of the 24 and 48 and the 'B' teams of the 5 and the 25.
