France thinks Dale Earnhardt Jr. is to blame for bad TV ratings
Yes, you read that right. Brian France, in his infinite wisdom thinks Dale Earnhardt Jr., with his winless season and troubles, is to blame for the drop in TV ratings.
Now, I'm not a Jr. fan, but blaming one driver on the fall in the ratings is ridiculous. Did some Jr. fans not watch because of Jr.? Probably, but that is not the only reason for the drop in ratings. I think Mr. France needs to rethink things.
"It would have helped if he would have been competitive," said France. "He didn't win an event and he certainly didn't make our playoffs. And that's unhelpful if you're trying to build ratings."
Well sure it would have helped the ratings more, the guy had a bad season, between blown motors and wrecks, but he's not the only reason ratings have fallen off.
The introduction of the COT, which promised us better racing, the dominance of Hendrick Motorsports, single file racing at Dega and horrible TV coverage to name a few, are the reasons for the drop in ratings. Yes, I'm sure Jr.'s bad season had some impact on the ratings, but all the other things contributed too.
"The storylines we talk about are driven by rivalries, driven by personalities, and they're also driven by dominance. Dynasties are all not bad for sports."
"Jimmie's in the early stages of what may be a dynasty. He's back-to-back champion in the stiffest of competition."
France called Johnson "the Tom Brady of NASCAR," in reference to the clean-cut quarterback of the New England Patriots.
"He's a California good-looking guy that does everything perfectly," he said. "That's his style."
I definitely disagree with France here, Dynasties are not good for the sport. If you've got one driver or one team doing all the winning, it's only going to make those fans happy and the rest bored. How often have we heard this season referred to by fans as "The Jeff and Jimmie Show"? I don't see how domination by one driver or team can help the sport. Some may say that it makes the others try harder and that may be true, but it sure isn't going to help the ratings if you can already predict who is going to win.
I think the introduction of the COT hurt the ratings too, it didn't seem to do what it promised and it made for the most boring Dega race I've ever seen. Some teams were behind on the COT because they didn't have the big bucks to do all the extra testing that teams like HMS and RCR did. Now we're going to have the COT full-time, hopefully the Daytona 500 isn't the same as Dega was.
Changes to The Chase (12 in and seeding) probably had something to do with the drop in ratings too, most fans aren't too thrilled with it in the first place. Also, the joke of qualifying too, with the guaranteed top 35 automatically in and everyone else fighting for those last 8 spots.
All of the above are reasons for the drop in ratings and I think France is just trying to come up with an excuse for the drop and Jr. seems to be the easiest thing to blame since he is the most popular driver.
Your thoughts?

Brian France could not find his ass with both hands. If nascar had left stock car raceing alone it would be alot better. The COT car is a joke along with being ugly and the fans not being able to tell one make from another it makes the race boring. The points system sucks.Should have left it alone.I could keep going but it would like telling a first grader they messed up.
Buy the way if it where for DALE JR the stands would only be 1/2 full.

The reason NASCAR sucks! it forgot the little man who made them big. The guy that went to the race to sit on the fence and drink beer and see a fistfight, now that's racing. But now it's like no fighting' big fines' let's be safe. In the oid days; people knocked out dad's windows out of the oid wagon and went racing. They didn't care if they got hurt they just wanted to race. Now you got prima donnas that say we might get hurt. We want big money but let's be safe. Let's face it people if you don't have the balls to race you need another job. Let's see some beat bang push & shove 200+ mph and some more fights. We might start to watch more racing.

I do agree with the part of boring races and already knowing who is going to win. Even though I am a die hard fan and watch every race I was VERY close to not watching J Johnson win AGAIN! So discouraging!
I am a DaleJr fan and I agreee he had a little to do with it but Jr was competitive during most races until he blew up and who knew that was gonna happen so often

I most definetly`know that France is full of crap! The reason for the lack of interest, is the chase its the worst thing he ever came up with! And the COT car is making the series one big IROC race, drive what you bring

Its not Jrs falut about the ratings blame DEI
for not giving him a GOOD ENOUGH CAR !!!!
He was in most of the races until the motor
craped out!!!! How many DNFS did he have 8
or 9 ? How Can U contend for a CHAMPIONSHIP
like THAT !!!!!!

If Brian France wants to blame anyone for a drop in ratings he should take a look in the mirror. He has tried so hard to make NASCAR into a generic, vanilla sport and now that he pretty much has he doesn't know how to live with it. If he wants ratings to go up again try letting the teams do what they know which is how to race instead of trying to dictate something he obviously doesn't know the real mechanics of. He may be a great business man which considering how he is harming NASCAR is debatable but given the benefit of the doubt he needs to stick to running the front office and stay off the track. You know racing wasn't founded on the premise of if you say something NASCAR doesn't like you get a fine. The guys that started out years ago were hard driving, hard talking, straight-forward guys and they are what attracted people to NASCAR in the first place, {Earnhardt, Wallace, etc). I'm not saying everyone should rant and rave and act crazy but there is nothing wrong with expressing an opinion when you have one even if it doesn't agree with NASCAR's opinion. After all we do have freedom of speech in the USA. I guess what I see as the biggest problem with NASCAR is NASCAR itself, it has become its own worst enemy. Sad but true.

jo, you make a good point but i think you're only half right. I'm not a big Jeff and Jimmie fan, but they have many, many fans and lots of wins, yet the ratings are down. A few years ago Jeff failed to make the chase and Brian F. wasnt blaming him for anything. Of course HMS is in Na$cars pocket anyway. How many times have their crew chiefs been suspended for cheating and they still have jobs? In no other sport would this happen.

I am impressed by everyone's observations.
I am a JR fan, and will continue to be even though his new car looks terrible.
I like to watch races on TV but it seems they have an incredible ability to go to commercial exactly 30 seconds before a great pass or a wreck. And I don't want to see some dumb blonde chick explaining racing. I can always just ask my wife. That goes for the male announcers who come from other sports as well.
I also think the COT is stupid. Why not take it to the next level and just give every driver the exact same car?
What made this sport is crews tweaking cars.
There is so much money involved I don't know if any of the drivers have the desire that Dale Earnhardt had. He raced to win, not for money. I watched the movie Dale on CMT last night and it reminded me of how hard drivers used to fight each other.
There is no sport more exciting to watch LIVE with your butt in the stands than NASCAR.
When I went to the Richmond race last September i was with 112,000 people together just digging it.
Dale Jr, Tony Stewart and JJ were running like crazy 1-2-3 then JR blew his engine and it just sucked.
Lets hope for a good '08 for the 88. Hate to trade my red 8 hat in for the new colors but what do ya do?
Can't wait for Daytona. Hope someone from NASCAR reads all the great suggestions you have made here and really thinks about it.
See you in March for the Vegas race, i will be the guy with the 88 hat.

We don't watch the races as much because of the commercials. The sport has become all about the almighty ad. We listen to the races on the radio they are more exciting. You cannot blame one driver for tv ratings falling. But keep in mind, Jr nation is huge, Mr. France needs to keep that in mind when he cashes his check.

I know you southerners aren't the brightest bulbs in the shed but Jr is to NASCAR what Tiger Woods is to golf. Tiger don't show for a tourny the bottom falls out. Jr ain't up near the front in the hunt the bottom falls out. It don't matter if you like Jr or not. He is NASCAR
Posted by: Joe | Dec 23, 2007 6:46:14 PM
I'm not a big fan of the COT but it's getting some inacurate blame for Talladega. The spring race at Talladega in the old car featured a lengthy mid-race stretch of rim-riding single file racing. I didn't think the fall race was bad overall, just a little to much caution on the drivers' parts mid-race. The intermediate track races are going to be boring however without some COT change. TV coverage with pseudo trendy rap and R&B at the breaks is persuing a hip demographic that won't do anything for NASCAR. That's a dead end marketing ploy that's turning off fans.
Posted by: Lifer43 | Dec 23, 2007 9:47:28 AM
Ratings are down plain and simply cause half the season the tv coverage sucks. Fox does wonderful coverage and I only wish they could do it all year long. If not please get rid of the BORING ESPN crew. Rusty sucks as a commentator. Give Allen Bestwick the job as main commentator. And bring in Krista Voda who is the best female commentator. And stop changing the name for goodness sake!! Enough already! Now we have the Sprint series! Geez ! And please give us some better looking cars!!
Posted by: Jo--JR's no 1 fan | Dec 21, 2007 8:44:30 PM
it doesnt matter what station its on. the coverage stinks. who wants to see the cut-away car during a race, and what does Suzy Kolber know about Na$car?? To her its just the Jeff and Jimmy show. I would rather listen to D.W. than her. At least he knows the sport.
Posted by: EILEEN | Dec 17, 2007 12:27:00 PM
Oops! Named wrong station...I just like FOX and SPEED reporting. Keep them all year so I always know where to tune in.
Posted by: shar | Dec 15, 2007 12:39:09 PM
Not sure about what has really dropped the ratings but as a fan of this sport I love to attend the races. NASCAR and its track owners are outpricing the average grassroots fan. $100-250 a ticket for a seat where you can actually see the entire track is getting out of the reach of most fans. Add in the cost of a hotel (which usually boost their rates up) for the weekend and it is a major hit to any household budget. So if you can never attend an event due to the cost you sort of lose interest in the sport and stop watching. So MR. FRANCE do not place the blame at the feet of Dale Jr.
Also...in my opinion only, get NBC off the circuit.Their reporting is so NOT exciting!!
Posted by: shar | Dec 15, 2007 12:24:55 PM
jr is not at fault because of poor ratings. this was the most boring year i have every had watching Na$car. one commercial after the other. John B. is right on. have Mr. France sit and watch a race on TV. coming from Boston a great sports town, Bostonians would never put up with this if it was a sox or pats game. wake up nascar.
Posted by: EILEEN | Dec 12, 2007 11:27:47 AM
Did Brian France ever sit and watch a race from his TV set at home and get aggravated at the number of commercials? It is because Nascar is so money hungry that alot people have decided not watch all commercials and a little race. Wake Up Nascar!
Posted by: Linda Williams | Dec 11, 2007 6:49:48 PM
oh ps take your rateing and stick them up your ass
Posted by: john bartsch | Dec 11, 2007 3:41:26 PM
hey mr france the reason the rateings are down.is in no way jrs falt.its your own falt for leting any one but fox put your show on .i have ben a jr fan a long time and think u shoud say u are sorry to hem for even saying that about hem
Posted by: john bartsch | Dec 11, 2007 3:32:30 PM
I keep in contact with many Jr fans. We all agreed on the same thing. We quit watching Nascar when we could see, that either Johnson or Gordon were going to be champion. Instead of Jr. being blamed on lack of ratings, lets put the blame where it belongs..............Nascar itself making a 12 man chase out of it. If you guy doesn't have a chance.........why watch it? So you just think of all the good drivers, that were out of the chase. Maybe their fans, "forgot" to tune in on the chase. The same goes for the banquet. I didn't bother watching it. Many of my favorite drivers were excluded!
Posted by: Bev Muskopf | Dec 9, 2007 9:05:21 PM
First of all, I'm one of Jr's biggest fans and I will admit I didn't watch as much this year as I did in years before. It's not because of Jr. It's a lot of things like poor coverage of the race because of sooo many commercials, too much car'tech' stuff and some of the announcers. Come on, do we really need an EX basketball player giving his opinion on racing? And some announcers sould stick with football. I sure miss Benny! I couldn't even watch the banquet due to not having the network it was broadcast on. In my opinion FOX has the best coverage. GO 88 IN '08!
Posted by: Ann | Dec 8, 2007 8:03:45 AM
Jr. is not the problem at all. Cure for ratings.
1. Keep the races on the same channel so we know each week where it is going to be broadcasted.
2.Less commercials 45% of broadcast is now commersials.
3,Stock car racing? Nothing stock about these cars.
4. Let each team do what they must to win with safty in mind too. To many rules, you take the fun out of racing.
5. Make the races more exciting, Reverse the fields each week. Gives the lower funded teams a better chance of winning and lets you really know how good a driver is working his way through the field and Crew Chiefs have to use more stratigy to get to the front.
6 Now, racing has nothing do do with speed, just how well the car is set up. Some skill, but. set up is all that counts now.(BORING)
Nascar is a great sport but it could be a lot better and more exciting.
Football,Baseball,Basketball. All players go where the money is. No loyality to the fans at all. I do not watch any of them.
Nascar is the only sport I watch but it is getting boring. Bring back the true stock car off the show room. Safty first and see your ratings skyrocket now with the TV coverage they have now and in High definition WHOW! What a show that would be.

The reason Jr did not win any races is because Teresa gave him crappy equipment
Posted by: Sharon | Dec 7, 2007 11:50:33 AM
im a jr fan, but the bottom line is nascar is going down hill because it is all about the money, it has completely abandoned their true fans, have you tried to go to a race on a mid-class income you cant do it no more. every thing is about the money, ifyou dont have it you arent shit. there isnt anything you cant depend on. there are constantly changing title sponsors, the networks that cover a race and changing rules on qualifing, car set-up and the championship. People are getting sick of nascar caring more about nascar than the fans that made them as big as they are today. I dont care if Jr wins 15 races next year the rating are going to continue to fall until nascar quits blaming everyone else and realizes theyre the problem.
Posted by: jeff | Dec 6, 2007 10:20:21 PM
Francis and his boys/girls they need to make a set of rules and stand by them. The one thing that has turned me away from racing along with most people I know is giving one guy punishment then the next week the POSTER BOY at the time does the same thing and he gets a slap on the wrist.
Posted by: Robby Gilliam | Dec 6, 2007 12:03:16 PM
NASCAR took the racing out of racing. You surly cannot call these shows they put on racing.Older fans like myself that use to watch and support racing has just lost interest. It started the decline in the early to mid 90's and will continue to get worse because ther is no racing.

I would quit watching Nascar in a heart beat because of the final segiment which had those last men in the sound booth. They were really really bad. They hardly new what was going on and never kept the TV cameras on the whole line up of drivers. Sure wish there was a way to get rid of them.

I have been a nascar fan for over 30 years and this is the first year that I stopped paying attention to the sport about half way through. I am not a JR fan or a SR fan but I was just sick of the Jeff & Jimmie show. This season just SUCKED!!!!!!

If the cheater's must win, may they at least show a little class when accepting the award!

Mike,
No quarrel with anything in your post. I'd just as soon see the Chase go away. Other sports went to playoffs - or expanded playoffs - to add more playing dates and increase revenues. NASCAR's Chase didn't do anything but trivialize 26 races and cause the fans of 30 or so drivers to lose interest in the last 10. Not a good situation.
Posted by: johnpar | Dec 5, 2007 11:34:16 AM
Forget the wild red paint, the name of the family or the relationship between the owner and driver.
Forget Brain France who inherited something without working for it, who can fine him and take points away.
The truth is 2007 the most ignorant thing in nascar history was done to its most popular driver and most definite favored son!
At the beginning of the 2007 season one of the hottest team's owner expressed a lack of faith in her flagship driver, of her flagship car, of the biggest money contributing sponsor in her stable.
I am learning tenacity from Dale Earnhardt Jr., the tenacity his father would have been proud of. I won't insult anybody because Dale said he didn't want that.
Nay-Say all you want Mr France; sensationalize it and make the fans crazy all you want. You might pick a better band wagon next time because your band-width is definitely thin this time!!!!!!
GO 88, take whats yours, leave no survivors!

Posted by: Mike Daly | Dec 4, 2007 6:58:33 PM
johnpar, if NASCAR wants to renew interest in the sport -
DROP THE CHASE
GO TO MASSIVE RACE WINNER AND MOST-LAPS-LED BONUSES TO MAKE IT MATHEMATICALLY IMPOSSIBLE TO WIN THE CHASE WITHOUT MOST WINS AND MOST LAPS LED
DROP THE COT; GO INSTEAD BACK TO THE OLD CAR WITH THE ROOF WICKER AND 7-INCH SPOILER.
GO TO HARD TIRES, 2001-2 VINTAGE.
MAKE THE TEAMS OPEN THEIR BOOKS AND IMPOSE A SPENDING CAP, REVENUE SHARING, AND FORCE TEAMS TO DISBAND RACECARS TO CUT DOWN TO THREE TEAMS AND NO MORE.
Posted by: Mike Daly | Dec 4, 2007 6:57:18 PM
Bill, no, he wasn't good for the sport - if you lived through that era you remember the booing he always got. I don't buy the story that non-fans would watch to see if the dynasty team falls - it never works that way.
Jon2, those numbers are phony because the bulk of "quality" passes are lapped cars crowding the leaders on and immediately after restarts - when you count top-ten position changes the numbers with the COT are anemic, thus refuting Tom McCarthy. The COT was created FOR NASCAR TO TAKE AWAY MORE CONTROL OF THE RACING FROM THE TEAMS FOR THE INSPECTION STATION AND THE CONTROL TOWER, IT NEVER HAD ANYTHING TO DO WITH PARITY. The facts don't destroy my argument, they destroy yours, because the facts are all AGAINST THE COT. All Tom McCarthy and the COT ballwashers did was bring outright fabrication to the argument. Don't insult people's intelligence like that, because the COT is a failure and objective reality makes that clear.
Rich, let's hope Brian France snorts coke, because then they can arrest him and get him out of our lives.
Posted by: Mike Daly | Dec 4, 2007 6:54:50 PM
I'm sure Junior's issues this year didn't help, but here's what I think NASCAR needs to do to stimulate some interest:
1. The Chase - Find something that makes sense, quickly. Monkeying with the number of participants, "seeding" rules, etc., turns people off. A "playoff" format needs consistency to build interest.
2. COT - Get that goofy looking wing off that car. These are supposed to be stock cars - not UFO's.
3. Rule book - Simplify it. Establish weight parameters, dimension parameters, fuel, and engine displacement and get out of the way. Let the crews innovate. If someone can find a way to get around the track faster, reward 'em, not punish 'em. When tech inspection takes longer than the race, there's a problem.
4. TV - ABC/ESPN's coverage is awful. We have to listen to Brent Musberger and Suzy Kolber? Neither one knows a Cup car from a tugboat and it shows. Rusty Wallace's whine is sooooo grating. Split Cup coverage between Fox and TNT - and give more to Speed. At least we'd be able to shorten our search for this week's race so we can watch it.
5. Qualifying - Let the top 20 have a guaranteed spot in the next race, and fill 23 spots on time. Last year's standings shouldn't be used at all. Let everyone "go or go home" at Daytona - with the top 20 finishers being in for the next race. Eliminate all past champion's provisionals. They've already been paid for winning - let's see how fast they can go this week. Give out pit stalls in a random draw following qualifying.
6. Race day - Cut down on the festivities. Get on the air and get racing.

Furthermore, Dynasties are indeed good for the sport. It gives every other team a bullseye to shoot for every race, it brings more fans to the sport. Shoot, back in the days when Gordon was dominating and Gordon hating was the fad, I personally knew dozens of people who were not avid NASCAR fans who would sit and watch entire races just to see if he would wreck.
So, Dynasties are not good for the sport? So you are saying Dale Earnhardt Sr. was not good for the sport?
Posted by: Bill | Dec 4, 2007 5:32:05 PM
The Chase format itself is what killed the TV ratings, nothing else.

Agg,
Ballet Dancers, your kinda right. Pretty pathetic looking. Yea, Yea, my QB is behind bars as we speak and yes we have only won a couple games, OK! It's hard to keep up with how many you win when all the rest are a loss. Like Exile said, I hope my Felon QB was watching the Dog Fighting comment. Yes, that 2 minutes had me Hyperventilating. If Nascar could have races like the last 2 minutes of that game then everybody would be Hyperventilating and watching.

Enation,
You hit on it buddy! The word is PARITY! That one thing ruined college football, pro football, and now it's going to ruin Nascar. Parity in Nascar comes in the form of the damned C.O.T.
The days of dynasties are almost over in sports. Your 49ers, my Packers, those days are gone forever.
One day, even if your not a HMS fan, we'll all look back and say; "Wow remember when..."
I for one hope JJ wins a third in a row to tie Cale Yarborough. And maybe a fourth, because it will be the last time we ever see it!!!

yeah j2 sears is on the downside for sure.
you would think, with the loyal fans and the marketing power of nascar, sears would have to fight off the customers with a stick.

what a football game last night!!!
the last 2 minutes was like the last 20 laps at daytona or dega.
now if nascar could figure out how to make the rest of the races exciting like that the ratings would GO UP !!!!
"hey, it's 4th and 1... i think i'll wait till the last second and call a time out to upset the pats. opps, i think that was a mistake (pushes his mental toolbox under the bench like a bowling alley mechanic and tries to be invisible).

No surprise about Craftsman leaving CTS series. SEARS is in a free fall and it's corp sister KMART is a cripple in the retail mkt. Rumors of major store closings for SEARS, profits down 99%. Appliance & hardware sales in a freefall at SEARS. Ain't got the money for discretionary spending.

Sorry guys but the chase sucks..
For instance, a driver to possibly win 20 races before the chase begins early in the year, and still finish 2nd overall in points...its stupid..and even if my boy DALE JUNIOR wins the chase, its still stupid..a driver could be in 13th place when the chase begins, and for that guy to be told when the chase begins that "you can win the last 10 races in a row,but not finish in the top 10 in points"...that is ridiculous...period.

vetter racer
1) Crown a regular season champion 2) Award the "post" regular season champion with with a cup from whoever happens to be the series sponsor that year.
not a dig at you ok but then you have what ????? like in boxing or the lol wwe one guy is the champion here and another is there champion f k knows where??
the chase makes sense some what, unless your a 24 fan, but like this year's chase for most teams its just the best paid r & d time, and for others its like they are blocking dummies in preseason
12 guys 12 races pull straws for starting psositions and drivers put up their own 1 mil a piece and elinminate guys like on surviour lol
if BF is going to fk with nascar might as well have fun!!
personalities and close racing is whats going to bring back fans.....

portion of the TV ratings but every Jr.
