« Gordon's appeal set for March 5 - Could his NASCAR teams future be riding on this appeal? | Main | NASCAR penalizes Edwards and team »

Edwards is on a roll
Carl Edwards won his second Cup race in a row, he definitely had the car to beat in today's race. Teammate Matt Kenseth probably had the best car to battle with him, but we never got to see if that battle would have happened after Kenseth was spun when Jeff Gordon got loose and tagged him, sending Kenseth spinning and Gordon ended up slamming into the inside wall hard, destroying his car.
Although NASCAR would probably like to downplay it, it seemed as if tire problems played a big role in quite a few of the wrecks in today's race and yesterdays Nationwide race. Lots of hard impacts into the outside wall because of tires cutting down or blowing out. Tony Stewart had to be helped from his car after his hard impact.
Dale Earnhardt Jr. has a good second place finish, followed by Biffle, Harvick, Burton, Kahne, Ragan, Kvapil, Hamlin and Martin. I was surprised to see Ragan and Kvapil up there since we're not use to seeing them there and it's good to see Kahne and Biffle seeming to shake their bad luck from last year off and having good finishes.
Your thoughts?

yeah lid should have been teh first give away we all must have been thinking oil cap
they have to get a handle on the cheating with the cot, where is the ZERo tolereance, points and sit out 1-2-3 race would work, then its more like what 3-500 posible points lost??
Posted by: aggie | Mar 5, 2008 6:55:40 PM
I'm sorry but a fan of HMS (and the 48 in particular) pronouncing that "justice was served" is a big fat laugh right there.
Until Nascar does take a win away, they'll all keep cheating, blatantly and not-so-blatantly. How can a win feel good or mean anything knowing you flat out broke the rules to get it?
Posted by: Kari | Mar 5, 2008 6:49:18 PM
K2 - Has NASCAR said anything at all about the pre-race problems with the HMS and 17 cars?
Posted by: Diane | Mar 5, 2008 6:47:22 PM
Jon2,
Justice my ass. Justice would be to put him down to 43rd in points. 10 bonus pts if he makes the chase and all he did was drop down a few spots. That ain't justice.
Posted by: Deb | Mar 5, 2008 5:37:18 PM
The fine was increased from $100,000 to $150,000 but Dodge should cough that up for their screwup.

Posted by: Kurt2 | Mar 5, 2008 5:20:16 PM
Kari,
Sorry NASCAR will not take a win away..The 99 is the first to grab the MINUS 10 if you make the Chase.
Carl without Bob could be real interesting. As my boss said"Jack should not even appeal".. He will not win this one..
Hurry up J2 and keep justice was served please.. Cant wait till the hammer drops on the 48 CC.. Then I will pronounce :JUSTICE was served....
There is a reason all is hush hush on the HMS and 17 thus far and the RG decision.....
ENation"
MW had a afro last week. PLease donate a haircut to him.. please:)

Whew!
Posted by: Barb g | Mar 5, 2008 5:18:01 PM
i see that nascar fined carl looks like nascar up to there old tricks, there boys jeff gordon and jimmie johnson cant win now we will take points away from the best ford so they can catch up.nascar is fixed and that is a shame, a bunch of rednecks, they will do anything for the GM boys
Posted by: larry | Mar 5, 2008 5:17:10 PM
Ha ha.....these good ol' boys in NASCAR and their"massaging and cheating" the rules....shame ,shame...lol.

Justice has prevailed.
Posted by: Jon2 | Mar 5, 2008 4:53:17 PM
Yeah, they take away the 10 Chase bonus points but let him keep the win. That makes no sense.
Now, what were the "issues" with the other cars at Vegas? Since today is Penalty Day, does that mean they are not getting penalized??? And since Nascar threw the book at Carl, does that lessen Robby's chances of winning his appeal?
Posted by: Kari | Mar 5, 2008 4:49:18 PM
And the bonus penalty of losing the 10 Chase bonus points for the win. I'm satisfied.
Posted by: Kal | Mar 5, 2008 4:40:50 PM
Announced. 100 points, six race suspension, the standard for COT violation.
Posted by: Kari | Mar 5, 2008 4:34:23 PM
Unbelievable. I was picturing a "lid" as in maybe about the size of a jar. LOL!!! That is big. Or appears to be.
And they may not announce the penalties.......that's bull$hit.

Deb,
It's huge.
NASCAR appears to be very hush hush about this one if what Fan#5 says is so.
Carl cheated, and his turd looking grin during the interview after the "issue" arose in my book says so.
Posted by: Jon2 | Mar 5, 2008 3:51:35 PM
To all the lid should have been there...it doesn't bolt/screw from underneath...nascar ia way anal about "stuff" falling off, toy don't need "Missles" flying about in a wreck... according to Jayski, nascar may or may not announce the penalties...WHAT A LOAD OF CRAP!...it's been 2 weeks boys, shit or get off the pot!
Posted by: Fan #5 | Mar 5, 2008 3:44:52 PM
G-ann,
Looks the same way to me. How in the hell can something that big just: be missing!!
Jon2,
Were you shocked at how big the thing is?
Posted by: Deb | Mar 5, 2008 3:21:12 PM
I am not real smart sometimes but IMO I really don't think that thing could come off. It would have to be removed. The hose going into the tank would stop it from coming off and becoming a loose article flying around or loose on the track. At least from the pictures I just saw. It could look completely different in person. Sooo IMO it looks like intent to me. Someone correct me please if I am wrong.
Posted by: Graceann | Mar 5, 2008 3:04:55 PM
Holy Moses, the oil lid looks like it belongs on top of a garbage can.
Posted by: Jon2 | Mar 5, 2008 3:04:36 PM
Kurt2, Fan#5
If this thing flew out from under the car, somebody should have seen that. It's so big and it was just missing??????? The part that DT pulled up in that pic is the lid cover???????? Holy Crap!!!!!!!!!!
Posted by: Deb | Mar 5, 2008 2:53:48 PM
Jon2,
You wanted to know how big this lid cover is, well, go over to Lug Nutz and look at the pics. The lid cover is missing and it is big. Cousin Carl, better get the death penalty. What happened to Robby is child play campared to this.
Posted by: Deb | Mar 5, 2008 2:40:48 PM
I know its different but what happened to the other cars? Did it not happen? Did they just tell them to fix it and let it go? Sweep it under a rug? Why has this been addressed as well?
Posted by: Graceann | Mar 5, 2008 2:09:53 PM
Chad's a masseuse. Bob's a cheater. LOL
Posted by: Gretchen | Mar 5, 2008 1:01:13 PM
K2,
RE: Edwards - You could be right but I tend to believe it'll be a fairly significant penalty especially since his was the winning car.
RE: Innovator Chad - My comments are already on record regarding this subject.
Posted by: Jon2 | Mar 5, 2008 12:14:19 PM
Diane,
If Edward's penalty doesn't either equal or exceed Robby's I'll be amazed in light of the fact that Carl won the race and the infraction was shown to give him a competitive advantage, far more egregious than what Robby's "oversight" was.
Posted by: Jon2 | Mar 5, 2008 11:56:48 AM
J2,
Prediction:
for the 99,:)
25 too 50 points owners and drivers, and a fine, Bob gone for a few weeks.
AS you said, when the 48 gets slapped per you and Carls pehnalty;;;;
"IMO, the lid on Edward's car just didn't vibrate off, it was left off in order for Carl to gain a competitive advantage. NASCAR should come down hard on that team in light of the fact that it was found post-race and his was the winning car. "
Chad is a repeat offender,,,,so should he be taken behind Lowes Motorspeedway and be shot:)?? Or sine he is a repeat offender banned for the year??
Couldnt resist.. Seems ok when the HMS cars cheat but not okay when others get caught..
JUST IMO
Posted by: Kurt2 | Mar 5, 2008 11:53:13 AM
J2 - I feel that for NASCAR to be fair, Edwards should get as severe a penalty as Robby. However, Rusty's penalty was overturned and 2 other similar penalties in NNS were reduced. Do you think NASCAR is preparing us for a small penalty for Edwards?
Posted by: Diane | Mar 5, 2008 10:37:07 AM
Diane,
I emailed Joe Menzer at NASCAR.com and here's his reply:
"All they would tell us about the oil lid was that it was off. Not gone. Just off. Not loose or lost, but off. Every time we asked a different way, like was it still attached or what, they said it was just off."
Rusty Wallace on ESPN last night said the lid is held on with four screws.
The problem according to Rusty with one of their cars was that the lid was on but one of the corners was bent up. How that happened is anybodies guess. I believe their alleged infraction was rescinded.
IMO, the lid on Edward's car just didn't vibrate off, it was left off in order for Carl to gain a competitive advantage. NASCAR should come down hard on that team in light of the fact that it was found post-race and his was the winning car.

read this on Ow's, and Aj could could be placed into this group
A rookie average finish of 33.9 includes the three subpar performances turned in by Sam Hornish, Jr., Dario Franchitti, and Patrick Carpentier. Each of them wrecked at Vegas,
the IRL is looking better evry day for these guys dont you think :)

the guy does do some pretty good things at that track from what i read
is he as bad your making him out to be....i always thought the guy put on a great show there and ran a real nice track and event, no??
Posted by: aggie | Mar 4, 2008 5:46:03 PM
Majorly off topic but NASCAR:
Eddie from TMS needs to leave, go away or be canned.
He is a piece of work for many reasons. The shot at Teresa with the billboard, the 15 k for a driver throwing the helmet and now crying to get a damn Cup testing date.
why does he want a date>? For the Cautions at LVMS, no.. For sales that day (concessions ,etc and to make a name for himself again) as it will be open to the public..
Eddie is attempting to be Humpy and couldnt hold a candle to Humpy. He would be a part of Bruton..

Posted by: Kurt2 | Mar 4, 2008 3:02:38 PM
J2 - From what I've heard and read, NASCAR said the lid was OFF. I haven't heard anyone say it is MISSING.
K2, F5 - Did you guys hear the lid is missing?

Posted by: aggie | Mar 4, 2008 2:50:32 PM
K2,
For the sake of Saint Peter, it should be an easy question for a NASCAR pit crew guy:
HOW BIG IS THE LID IN SIZE?
Just answer that question, forget about the other commentary. Is it the size of a plate, a manhole cover, etc, give me an approximate size.
NASCAR stated that it was OFF at post-race inspection. So my point is, if it came off during the race and was material in size, it more than likely would have caused a stir with respect to a yellow flag coming out. But, ain't no one located it between the bumper walls.
Posted by: Jon2 | Mar 4, 2008 2:48:44 PM
J2,
AS a 48 Fan I so would not ask whose toolbox is it in? It was massaging.. You are so the pot calling the kettle blank on that.
Chad is notorious for playing with things,How many years in a row for getting kicked? please tell me you knowledge on that?
The 99 could in fact be just like the RWI car and have the bolt back out of it.. Could be the same 25 cent part..
What your boy does has nothing to do with parts, he takes the time to ADJUST IT so its illegal. Big big difference.
Do i expect a penalty? oh yeah, 25 and $$$..
G Anne, The 24, 48 and 17 were not on this issue.. It was something else. and as you see it is being kept real real real real quiet...but HMS once again won that with what was done... Too damn funny..not a shot a you Grace. just them..
That should be out late today or tommorrow..Till then I remain quiet ..Aggie you may want to send J2 some crow real fast...I shall leave it there
Posted by: Kurt2 | Mar 4, 2008 2:32:18 PM
Are there gonna be fines for the other 3 cars (17,48,88) or has that been dimissed? I haven't heard anything on this issue since the 99's problem. Don't they usually rule today or at the latest tomorrow?
Posted by: Graceann | Mar 4, 2008 1:44:58 PM
Fan#5,
On NASCAR.com:
by Joe Menzer, 3/03/2008:
"Poston said the situation with Edwards' car was not quite the same.
"It was similar. In those cases, the lids were loose," Poston said. "The lid on the 99 was off."" In other words, it weren't where it was supposed to be. It was there in the pre-race inspection but was not present during the post-race inspection.
My point is, WHERE'S THE LID? Did it create a caution during the race when it disattached itself from Carl's car? Is it still out there on the track? Whose toolbox is it in?
How big are the lids F5 or K2? Give us a diameter size thing. Are they 6 inches in diameter or bigger?
The RWI part was faulty but the lid was still attached and accounted for. Interesting is that this fault was discovered prior to the CUP race. Could the 99 car have exploited this weakness and later claimed it got "lost" during the race as a result of it? Sort of a massage?
Anyway, it ain't no where to be found. What happened to that part? Please K2 or F5, provide me with the diameter of that part. Heck if NASCAR will throw the yellow if there's a bug on the track, a part as prominent as an important car part won't go unnoticed.
Posted by: Jon2 | Mar 4, 2008 1:32:41 PM
F5,
Asked to get a call once the NASCAR call was made and Marc told me he would let me know..
IMO It should be as if the uphold this, hit the 99 and not touch the 3 others from this weekend. A shitstorm will in fact erupt..
Odd thing is 99.5% of the garage agrees RG should have it rescinded or massively lessened
Posted by: Kurt2 | Mar 4, 2008 1:01:26 PM
K2, I believe Robby's will be overturned...they backed themselves into that corner!
J2 I don't think the lid was missing...the bolt was allowing the lid to "float"
Posted by: Fan #5 | Mar 4, 2008 12:58:08 PM
F5,
Going to be a interesting afternoon, saw DS and RWI WON the appeal from Daytona...It was in fact RESCINDED.. LAst one for that was HMS last year..
AS you know 5 many people are wondering what the hell will go on with Robby.. NASCAR is in fact in a real bind here..
J2, please let me know how the lid was premediated. The RWI car the bolts backed out from FAULTY parts.. It was DEEMED "non intentional...
You have alot of room to talk with Chad being your boy with premeditated
Posted by: Kurt2 | Mar 4, 2008 12:44:16 PM
Maybe Carl's team just massaged the rules a little in order to push the envelope so as to improve the big pitcher.
Posted by: Gretchen | Mar 4, 2008 12:38:59 PM
Fan#5,
Thank you for that clarification, the point being though is that with it being off it created downforce which gave Edward's an added advantage.
Was the lid found anywhere on the track? No. So this was a premeditated infraction by the 99 team who purposely left the lid off in order to create downforce on the car and improved Carl's chances of winning.
Posted by: Jon2 | Mar 4, 2008 11:54:09 AM
K2...Mikey did it first!...J2, CLOSE but no cigar, The lid being off releaves air pressure from under the car that creates more downforce...NOT allowing air INTO the car to create more downforce, If that where the case Cup cars would ONLY have windsheilds
