Is Tony Stewart really leaving Joe Gibbs Racing?
Last years big Silly Season question was Dale Earnhardt Jr., this year it seems to be Tony Stewart, even though he has one year left on his contract.
Unless you've been living under a rock, the rumors started flying about Tony Stewart leaving JGR when they announced their move to Toyota last year, now the rumors have really heated up, could Stewart really be leaving?
When the latest rumor about Stewart being offered half-ownership of Haas CNC came out, it didn't take Stewart too long to speak out about it.
We've got multiple offers on the table right now, and there's a couple in particular that really have caught our interest. We haven't made a 100% decision yet on what we're going to do, but we're going to look at all the options. And the options are exciting, all the way around.
Stewart did say that staying at JGR is still one of those options.
A wise person told me it never cost a dime to listen, so right now we're all ears. Right now it's just a matter of figuring out what we want to do, and being smart. We've had a great run at Joe Gibbs Racing. It doesn't mean it's over. We're just going to look at everything that's out there.
Stewart said that JGR has been informed of the offers, including ownership, but he says that he has not asked to be let out of his contract early, despite some rumors that have reported he has. This isn't to say that he won't, just that he hasn't as of yet.
Most know that Stewart wasn't thrilled with the move to Toyota and that Chevy wants Stewart back into their fold, so it really wouldn't be surprising to see Stewart leave Gibbs after all these years. How he leaves and where he goes remains to be seen.
So far I've heard the half-ownership in Haas CNC and the fourth car at RCR, but as Stewart said, he's had multiple offers, so there are some that haven't been found out yet.
I guess the biggest question is that if he does the Haas CNC deal, could he bring that team around to being in contention week in and week out? They haven't had a lot of luck finding the right drivers or sponsors, so could a big name like Stewart turn that team around? And who would be his teammate?
If that happened and right now it's still a big if, being the old sentimental fool I am, I would love to see Bobby Labonte go to the second car and see old teammates back together again before they retire, just like they were back in the early days at Gibbs.
Your thoughts?

Diane,
I think you misunderstood what I said, I said Jr. shouldn't rely on anyone to help him and yes he has been screwed by other drivers and he has done the same.
Posted by: Jon | Apr 27, 2008 6:00:59 PM
Jon - When it comes down to the final move in any race, no driver has the responsibilty to help anyone but himself. So saying Jr. was screwed doesn't make sense. He has hung other drivers out to dry many times. BTW, I like Jr.
stricklinfan82 - I find myself almost always agreeing with your posts. Very well said!!
Off subject- Lee Spencer mentioned on Fox.com that Caterpillar might replace AT&T next year on the 31 car. We may see a Burton in a Cat car again.

Also,Kevin Lepage, PLEASE STOP HAVING YOUR WIFE SUPPORT YOU RACING CAREER, she is a sweetheart...
did i hear lepage refer to his spotter as "she?" if so then his wife is his spotter?
totally agree stricklin.
it's kinda weird to see a driver throw himself under the bus.
But what's up with Lepage. How does he continue to get rides?
How about Schrader 3rd, Allmendinger 4th and Vickers 8th in Cup?
Posted by: Diane
i think lepage drives for himself.
schrader 3rd
way kool.
allmendinger 4th
ahh, ok
vickers 8th
hhmmm. kinda sorta like vickers.
when he won by wreaking Jr i totally hated his mother freakin dumbass redheaded step child skinny little ass.
but, life's way too short to hate on people i don't even know in real life.

First of all I'm sorry that Dario is hurt and I certainly wish him the best in his recovery. Having said that I'd very happy that David Stremme is going to get a chance to prove Chip wrong. I would say I hope he wins but I'm not much of a Chip fan and would hate to see Chip win, so let's just say I'm rooting for him to run up front all day and finish in the top 5.
Secondly, I lost a ton of respect for Kevin Lepage today. After watching the wreck I felt terrible for the guy. I figured his spotter didn't tell him the pack was coming and he had no idea he was pulling in front of the pack. When ABC switched to the interview with Kevin I expected to see a ton of remorse from a visibly shaken driver and a heart-felt apology for making a mistake that ruined the days of many other drivers.
When Kevin instead angrily said he knew exactly what he was doing, that he had no idea why people were mad at him, and that everyone else should have had a better spotter I was very turned off.
First of all, if NASCAR is correct that they were supposed to stay on the apron until turn 2 that's Kevin's first mistake. He apparently didn't listen or misunderstood what they told him. Having said that, just like Dale Jarrett said, EVEN IF he thought pulling onto the race track was legal, at some point common sense should intervene and tell you not to pull out in front of the entire field running 3 wide behind you.
Major thumbs down to Kevin Lepage. I used to root for him as I do most of the "little guys" but I will not anymore.

Jr should realize by now very few drivers are going to work with him when it comes down to the final move, he has been screwed by far too many people he thought would make the move and instead they wouls leave him high and dry. He picked the perfect time to pull out and made a huge run on Tony and instead of having cars go with him they changed their minds and Jr was shuffled back to 6th.

Kinda ironic that Stremme was asked to go back and drive his old car tomorrow. He should never have been fired from that ride. He did a great job today and wish him luck tomorrow.
Way to go Smoke!! But what's up with Lepage. How does he continue to get rides?
How about Schrader 3rd, Allmendinger 4th and Vickers 8th in Cup? Yeh, I know Ken and A.J. were in qualifying set-up. But still good jobs.

Glad to aslo see Stremme in the Cup ride tommorrow even though its for Chip Gannassi..

Congrats to Smoke on 2 poles and a win.. The meditation on contracts just went way up already...

Here is the message I got back on dealy from J2's computer...
" Sorry I a pickle smoking JJ right now, Rick will follow. I will email you when done". "If is is Johnson and Johnson please send the normal supply of itmes to the prebilled address"
FYI, J2, still awaiting, was the bumpkin comment directed here..
Crap, great day for Stremme as well, damn nice day..
Also,Kevin Lepage, PLEASE STOP HAVING YOUR WIFE SUPPORT YOU RACING CAREER, she is a sweethaett and you screwed the pooch and then tried to blame others for it.. Here is a hint, listen during the drivers meeting..It helps.. you screwed up and your lovely self cant admit you FUBAR"D period..
Hint thats why you could never get a good Cup ride.. You and Jermey head to Iran and race camels.. you would be better, but hell then it would be the camels fault too:)

He's every reason why NASCAR felt it necessary to go mainstream. They want to transcend that image of the foul mouth bumpkin who measures his wealth by how many axles he has on his house.
UNREAL
under which one of the axles did you crawl out from ?? with your keyboard in hand??
yeah nice trade off, go mainstream and get attract fans like you??
ex and dianne
that makes sense but i think u have be a cetain type of owner like rc or hms to have that happen within your org and i dont think its in the jgr business model expeacially with JG and his NFL type team mentality......the nfk is the nfl and ncaa is the ncaa
football guys arent used to the bb minor league system for a sports org

exile - You're right about Logano. A writer over on SPEED.com suggested that Joe should let Tony be the owner of the 4th car driven by Logano and then Tony continue to drive the 20 car. Since JGR is a family owned business, giving Tony ownership of one of the cars is not likely. But it's an interesting concept.
Also, comments about would Tony be on a winning team, championships, etc. without Joe Gibbs. That can be turned around. Would JGR be a succesfull business earning millions of dollars if they hadn't had Tony driving their car? Maybe, maybe not.

lol
wow
last night while channel surfin' my newly fixed cable i came across a catch the speeder show.
the cop pulled over a young and obviously southern gentleman speeding alone in his beater ford pickup. he explained how he had rebuilt his motor with "5 valves per cylinder" and that it now has "4,300 foot pounds of torque."
kool.
the stars and bars flag duct taped to his headliner kinda set the tone.
to compare, a person who fearlessly jumps over the wall on pit road in front of a semi in control race car while draggin' an airhose behind him, to the guy with the beater ford truck shows what a total dumbass you continue to be.
i'm guessing you are closer to the drunk guy in the old ford truck, than a professional nascar team member.

1 Tony Stewart
2 Dale Earnhardt Jr.
so far so good.
who's out next...
the 26... nevermind.

Dave,
His opinions? Are you referring to the Rick Order, the RUMORS that always turn out to be just that, the foul mouth expressions he makes toward others? Dave, Dave, Dave. Please for the sake of your self-esteem, don't ever feel the need to suffer an opinion from that sort of lot.

yw diane.
there's never a christian around without a big guilt trip involved in the mix.
"Would Stewart be a two-time Cup champion if he had driven anywhere other than Gibbs, and for a car owner whose loyalty and patience have paid dividends?" "
"Would any other car owner have put up with Stewart slapping a tape recorder out of a reporter's hand?"
if i was tony's owner he wouldda got a fat bonus for that one.
J/K... well kinda.
the media does nothing productive, except to try to add drama to everyday events.
gibbs' loyalty ends where the dollar begins.
when ol' joe walks around a corner and bumps into robert yates does he look him in the eye?
does joe hand robert a promo bag of m&ms, or offer to pray for ryr's future?
anyway, joey logano turns 18 on may 24th, and will make his nascar nationwide series debut for jgr at richmond.
that should be fun to see.

k2
Interestng you have Carl, Biffle, Truex Jr. , Ryan N, Smoke and I am missing one name in there all trying to get a sweeter deal now..
the interesting one i read and posted was how rfr is asking odepot for 24-25 million up from what 15 mill for 99 car in 07, steep raise due to 99's popularity?? or what ?? besides costs?
the 31 car will have a sponser and that 4th car at rcr is allways rummour bait i guess just like last year
k2 did you finally see the 3 rcr cars running top 10 in pratice FINALLY they DONT have to start at the back.......SR owned that track with rcr no reason rcr cant own it again..... 07 and 31 had daytona won hopefully the racing gods will repay 2 great team mates on sunday
f--k all the jr hype, he is going to have to have one heck of a motor and race PLUS no BRAIN farts.....can him and te jr connetrate for 500 miles and be pattient like his ole man??
should be interestimg if his teamates are going to be as nice as they were in the bud shoot out where they had f -a all to gain from him winning!!
this year there wont be any rope a dope- lay back like 24 did last year, its power and teamwork and luck plus zip mistakes on pit lane for 08
k2 good luck out there your going to need it against that 31 and 07 and that 29 looks fasttttttttttt
or k2 how about a fluke win like BV lol

wouldnt it be funny if Smoke went to DEI and got 50% owenership"..
yeah that would be funny and can u imagine the fire under kellys and jr ass
the funny one is if this rummour starts to get legs lol
Dave
the ups rock star bs and not going with Jb your probably right and its all in the ad cmapaign and branding of teh driver and product......so who knows
rock star to me is outrages and create buzz in the media and ts and kyb fit that bill and in nascar dont embrass the sponser while doing it, just create the buzz and no body does it better than these two, they speak their minds
ts is more of a tv guy than kyb........kyb still has that geek squad look to him....smoke is pretty versatile for tv comercials plus like jr i think he crosses over to the non white fans real good
Posted by: aggie | Apr 26, 2008 10:22:11 AM
exile - Thanks for responding to the newest FS (Charlie). You did a better job of putting him in his place than I ever could.
K2 - Smoke and 50% of DEI, your friend has a good sense of humor. Unlikely to happen, but nothing is impossible. :)
Good luck this weekend.
Posted by: Diane | Apr 26, 2008 9:22:03 AM
Dave I do agree with you on RCR , JEff Burton and UPS..He isnt "young" enough to fit what they are looking for...
Also, thank goodness Jeff isnt Obama.I will leave that there..
Smokes deal is helping the others right now be able to negotiate there contracts better and easier.
Interestng you have Carl, Biffle, Truex Jr. , Ryan N, Smoke and I am missing one name in there all trying to get a sweeter deal now..
Jr fans wont fnd this funny, but a good friend of mine called me last night and we were talking and he joked" wouldnt it be funny if Smoke went to DEI and got 50% owenership".. I LMAO when he said that, and he did too.. Wasnt a shot @ JR, but he was refleting back to last years issues over there..

I think Smoke will be at RCR or HMS.
Never say never (i.e. Smoke will never be at HMS) and never say guarantee (i.e. guarantee Smoke will retire at JGR).
We all can blow hot air like we know or think we know...but nobody knows for sure.

J2, "4)Keep on the lookout and report back to us immediately if you see a clean shaven Tony in a proper fitting button down neatly pressed shirt."
I doubt anyone would ever see this. But, I would LMAO, if I did see it. His reasoning to buy into ownership of the CNC-Haas teams just might be so that he doesn't have to shave for appearances.
About K2, he has a job to do, every raceday. He doesn't have any obligations to post here. I'm glad he posts his opinions, which is what we all are doing.
aggie, no offense, but JB is not the "rock star" that ups is after. I know you don't like Edwards, but Kyle and Carl are the "hot-shoes", at this point. I have a great deal of respect for Jeff. I think that he is the best "spokesman" of the sport. But, he is not the Obama of NA$CAR (and I probably respect him more, because he's not).

DJ: I'm with you on the BL & TS deal at Petty to bring them back to the front. With the old CEO of Home Depot at Dodge, TS and Nardelli had friendly relationship and TS did drive some Mopar at some period. I could see Petty pushed back to the front. See J2 we can see the future too!

Krista Voda was interviewing Tony Stewart today and right before they came on camera, Mike Dillon, Vice-President of Competition of RCR, handed Tony a business card. Tony said he probably was just wanting him to drive a late model Dillon is fixing up and just laughed it off.
Later Dillon, who is also Richard's son-in-law, was interviewed. When asked about the business card, he said he just wanted to remind Tony that RCR had a 4th car coming next year that didn't have a driver.
Probably means nothing, but was interesting.

2) Scream " I Love HMS" as you are being violated.
3)Place he pom poms back on and underoos and chant9 this is really important to get right: PLease:)
"I am a FS, I am a FS, I am A FS"
See J2, i can add humor as well:)
DJ, what FS, fails to see Smoke wants to OWN some not run only.. He isnt getting that at HMS, Nor RCR..
Have a good weekend dude.. Radster hope your alive..DJ, be there for the ROCK... Look ofr "mail" on it
Posted by: Kurt2 | Apr 25, 2008 6:25:26 PM
K2...be sure and get on those assignments from J2.That HMS help doesn't seem to be really helping Haas.A DRIVER like TS and sponsor $ and overall knowledge of alot of things business wise and car wise will help Haas. Not a total fan but if he went to HMS that would be a very bad deal for Nascar IMO....
Thing TS doesn't need all the HMS perks like Jr needed and admittedly needs to win races and a possible championship. That is why Jr went to HMS.Tony doesn't need HMS to win races and championships as he already has done that with a 2 car stable early with Gibbs.HMS doesn't need TS as far as that goes.Just can't see that one J2......
I would also like to see BL and TS get it together again.I'm sure BL would get that fire back just as his bro did when he joined HMS and got that championship later in his career. With all the charity work TS does for Kyle and Patty Petty....would be cool to see TS and BL get it on with some sponsor and factory $$ and bring Petty back to at least victory lane....
Beer, mid 70's...you know the deal Agg.Local Mexican deck with mas cervezas.K2,hollar.Ya'll have a good race weekend!
Posted by: DJ | Apr 25, 2008 6:19:45 PM
race fan
well ups could be one its a top team and org and great crew seond to one i think.....the rock and roll is just that smoke screen maybe
also if ts goies with ups and drops home depot or office depot grabs the 31 and ups grabs the 99
rfr raised their asking rpice for the 99 to 14 mil so how knows if 99 7 odepot stay??
31 probably has a deal done by now iam sure, just good a team and org at rcr not to have guy knocking at their door
jb would be a great pitch man for ups ce is too phoney shake that mom boy back flip bs image already
rcr can attract very good sponsers and with their teams and engine program have got the cscales of economies in their favour so dont need 24 mil from ups or office depot
31 team is all class, what other team week in week out unloads a soso car 30-35 place in starting field and wind sup top 5 ??????
think dont take long NOT many....31 crew are the new killers bees.......just beat you on pit lane and on teh track with great calls from scott and JB
as a sponser u would be crazy not to look st the 31 is u were shopping
like why fk with a dodge team who have what one top 5 since daytona??? why waste $$$$
ups is pretty crafty in cup and they want a winner and who knows maybe 25 mil at rcr and the 31 will do that for them in 09??
J2 your on crack or that fire hose of k2'sd is cutting of air to yoru brain iam sore to say ,,,,,thinking ts will be at hms

K2,
Here's your assignment for this weekend at Tally regarding this Tony matter.
1)Keep on the lookout and if you see Tony in deep discussion with Rick, report back to us immediately.
2)Keep on the lookout and if you see Tony in deep discussion with either Jeff, JJ, or Junior (Casey don't count), report back to us immediately.
3)Monitor Rick's radio comments during the race and pay particular attention if he says "don't play hard with our future superstar" or "get up there and give the 20 a push" and report back to us immediately.
4)Keep on the lookout and report back to us immediately if you see a clean shaven Tony in a proper fitting button down neatly pressed shirt. If only one of these incidents occurs, there's a chance Tony will be Rick's boy in 2009, If all four of 'em happen, it's a done dea.
I realize these instructions might be difficult to follow. But we're counting on you to be there for us in the saga of whether Tony will defect to the Dark Side.

RCR has a sponsor for his fourth car but
who will sponsor Jeff Burton's car since
AT&T will no longer be the sponsor after
this year.

Tony's been at this crossroads before like in 2003(?) when he said he was looking for other opps during contract negotiations with Gibbs and Gibbs was able to keep him there.
This is different, He's looking for a purchase opp and what better time than now with several of the teams barely making ends mean which indicates it's bargain time. Plus Tony's seen what Junior's done and how well things are going for him as owner and driver so nows a good opp to jump at the opps out there. Hey, he ain't no spring chicken anymore. Time isn't on Tony's side and the older ya get, typically the less wins come down the pike for you.
In addition, with two very capable drivers like Kyle and Denny already under wraps and winning in 2008 Gibbs may feel that losing Tony, though it would be bad, won't be a major blow to his company. So there may not be that motivation to negotiate as hard.
Chevy, Rick's engines at Haas, Shared HMS development at Haas, Offer of ownership to Tony, Potential ride at HMS while Tony get's Haas - TS in shape. Hard to pass that one up if I were in TS's sichiation.
Awhile back, I predicted that Junior was gonna go with HMS and the stars are aligning for another superstar to hang his shingles with Rick and the gang.
Canceling the contract. If Tony expresses forcefully enough he wants out of it, it'll happen.
So many "reports" were flying around about Junior bailing a while back, some were quite comical at the time .. Some made you fall off a chair laughing.. then he went and did it, hung his shingle with the Dark Side.. Better strap yourself in that chair big boy 'cause it might happen again with TS.

thanks i dont know f all most days but i do listen very very well most days and seem to be in right spot right time ..especially when a guy in cup who is good buddies with ts and he yakking tarsh on nascar lol
bet the farm smoke isnt going to be at jgr, you should know these deals just get uglier by the day just ask JR....this one might real ugly where they will just ok smoke f k right off
no one in cup does more at the grass roots of racing than smoke and chev needs him bad more than toy does
toy has 2 young guys in 11 and 18 smoke guys then grab biff and toy has 3 great guys back in their line up
17-16 are going to sick of the 99 soon at rfr 99 is an its all about me and my mon type of guy...17 is like apoutty lil kid and RR well who knows?? FRF isnt hms ro rcr for team chemistry or team/org morale its like 5 mercenaries o the same team
i have admit thse guys sure know how to plan out these mdia leaks lol
i think deals are planned out in sept leaked out in dec jan feb them mdeia in april may and then start all over
mt jr is the next interesting one??
ups want hype well ts at hass gives them that hands down!!

oooooooops and sorrrrrry
iam just stoked at smoke plans
think about this deal for a sec just by him keeping al his merchandise sales to his own team, that alone will buy him some engines, lol and smoke can easily 2x3x up marc's salary and he ‘ll have the best engine builder in cup
its a no brainer deal, 10 years move on smoke
what I meant by the cup cars and bush cars being so close is this, right 9 out of the top 10 cup guys run pt in bush except for jg and kb…….the old cars still give this guys great feed back into set ups ect for Sundays races. Nothing beats seat time in racing!! Just ask the gohomers
f5 get your ass over to hass and apply
hey guys hass is tax felon also NO??like HMS??? pewrfect marriage!!!
all i know since he got jesse james from west coast in his trade show booths in 02 business was brisk lol

Ch,
I'm pretty sure he meant him and his agent when saying "we".

My pet peeve of drivers:
Who the heck is the we he keeps speaking of? Is it him and his monkey?
It's not just Stewart, it seems all the drivers have multiple personality disorder.
I still think he'll (they'll?) go to HMS and then Rick will start his own series.

Yes Aggie, I remember you saying that, but if it does happen, it won't be UPS, remember they already announced the sponsor for the fourth car.

The KHI is "being explored" to move up in a few years Kathy
Ahh ok. That makes more sense, I thought they were going to work on the Nationwide Series first, since they added the second car full-time and then after that move on up.

Gibbs take on the deal is that they have Tony under contract through 2009 and have every expectation he will be racing for them throuhg then. If Tony really gets another deal and wants out, all he has to do is say something along the lines of I can't wait to get back in a Chevy and he will be there tomorrow.

history has a way of repeating itself and this is like dw going to hms back in the 80 when dw was at the top of his game and hms was starting of
i wish smoke all the best and go for it
being self employed id rather own 100% of my own business than manage someone else's and own f-all of someelses and their are [pros and cons to both
