Humpy, Kentucky, a bit of NASCAR news this week
There's been a bit going on this week in the world of NASCAR.
Humpy Wheeler resigns - Humpy Wheeler will officially resign after this weekends running of the Coca Cola 600 as President and General Manager of Lowe's Motor Speedway. From everything I've read about this, the timing and everything was not as Humpy had expected, I guess it was scheduled to announced later about his retirement, but a disagreement between him and Smith kind of pushed it up I guess, so it wasn't all amicable.
Bruton Smith's, SMI, buys Kentucky - Smith said he will add more seats and try and get a Cup date for the track, although NASCAR said there is no guarantee. It was also said that they may be in the process of buying another unnamed track that might help with that goal. Rumors are floating around about him possibly buying Pocono and moving one of those dates, but Smith denied that he had been in contact with them. This is NASCAR, so who really knows what's going on behind the scenes?
Ganassi makes another crew chief change - In another surprising move, Ganassi fired Jimmy Elledge and will bring up Brain Pattie to be the new crew chief for Montoya and the #42 team, less than a month after swapping the crew chiefs of the #41 and #42. I was surprised to read that Montoya supposedly was told that they were wanting to "get rid" of Elledge and Montoya didn't want them to, he was happy with the way things were working despite the not so great finishes.
Tony Stewart is supposedly "getting closer" to knowing where he'll be next season, but they've been keeping it pretty quiet and he still is saying he has "not" asked to get out of his contract with Gibbs. Until an announcement comes out, the rumor mill will still fly about where Tony will be, whether it be at Gibbs or somewhere else.
Your thoughts?

when i saw these 2 i just had to howl and share them with you guys/gals
the first i just holwed
Worst Race – The 24 hours of California
It hurts my fingers to type another sentence on this race, so I’ll leave it at this: weepers, absurd rain delays, and stultifying boredom. Let’s just say any residual “feel good” NASCAR glow following the 50th Daytona 500 disappeared right about the time they postponed the finish of the race at 2 AM East Coast Time until the “following” – er, technically the same day after an interminable five hours’ worth of delays.
Most Amusing Moment – Jacques Villeneuve’s NASCAR career
Forgive the second baseball reference, but Villeneuve’s NASCAR career was the quintessential “cup of coffee in the majors.” JV crashed in the second qualifying race at Daytona and that, ladies and gentlemen, was that. As my Formula One-mad friend said at the start of the season, “He won’t last, Danny. He doesn’t have the fire for racing anymore.” Nice prediction, Mr. Hollis.

I will start nice:)
Congrats to the 9, GEM ,Ray etc. for another great week and car.I knew you three (Dottie, Graceann, Kari ) would be happy..
Now not sure whom it was a few blogs back, but someone stated prior to the All Star Race or right after, that Charlotte was the 48's house!!!!!! Well I think the keys have been changed on the doors now and its the 9's.
Humm 48 went POOF and wonder why(Slying grinning)
Another solid(quiet as usual) run for the 31 and the 29. Consistent as usual.
Rewatched it last night when I got in.DW is a annoying soul.Damn, I had to hit freaking MUTE, but not before i see he jumps on a freaking bandwagon acrosss the board. From the 88, 48,18 , hell whomever is in the lead he loves. He needs to have 200 MPH duct tape placed over his mouth.
Proud to see the 43 running so damn well last night and Ragan another great run. He's coming..
Smoke had a damn good car, and scary, he si coming up a few weeks earlier than normal:)
Aggie, hows the crow

Diane,
Tony tried to go too far on his right side tires and he almost pulled it off--you almost wish, if it were going to happen like that, it had happened sooner rather than SO CLOSE to the finish when Tony was probably tasting that VL champagne. Kenny Francis deliberately put two tires on during the last yellow flag pit stop and sacrificed a bit of track position to set Kasey up for a fuel only stop during the last run. Regardless, summer's almost here and Smoke is getting set to catch fire.
I was feeling pretty smug about my picks there for a while--the 83, 6, 88 and 9 were doing awesome--and I literally screamed when Vickers lost that wheel. Felt horrible for him. Ragan had a solid run and had some speed for a while. It was definitely a better race than I expected, given the snoozefests at some of the 1.5 milers.

Dottie, Graceann, Kari - I'm glad you ladies are so happy today. But my heart is broken because of what happened to Tony.
I also feel bad for Kurt Busch & Brian Vickers. Great runs, bad finishes.
Good jobs by David Reutimann & Bobby Labonte
Ironman - Sorry, but I asked the same questions about Jr.'s penalties. Maybe I just don't understand the rules on that.
Thank goodness Fox only has one more race to broadcast this year. Even though Bill Weber is next, I enjoy Wally and Kyle P.

Yaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay!! It's nice to see you and it's especially nice to see that #9 put a smile on your face (and mine!) for the second week in a row!

I was watching that on t.v. yesterday with the view from the helicopter..Very glad you and yours are ok..hope the weather is better today and you have a chance the watch the race..

Jon2,
Thanks for asking about the storm shelter, but unfortunately we live in a large apartment complex and we don't have a storm shelter. We have to huddle in a hallway under a mattress when the storms get too close and we are fortunate to have some of the best weather trackers in the nation here in OKC and they keep us well informed. The national severe storm center isd located in Norman, OK which is only 25 miles away and they are always on the look out.

FS, it wasnt your precious HMS that "policed a damn thing". It was another team all together. Damn do you cra H _M_S daily..geez..
Sorry I dont agree but could Hamlin come across a tad differenrt on the issue? yes he could. Brad is young and truly has to fight for his life/respect thus far..
It has to be give and take and just as last year in the Busch race when Jeff B wrecked Kyle B, he taught him a lesson period.
You ahve to give and take in the race not just race so hard its insane.
JR learned it, and all others have either in a good or rough way, part of the "welcoming commetitee" to the real world..
You will be raced as you chose to race.
Diane, not going to"moonlight " next weekend:) for anyone.. Taking it slow on Sat and watching on the Pit Box..
2 teams on 1 is BS however you cut it , say goodbye to some of Brad K's folks for a bit and junebugs..
Hardcards will be taken
Please take note tonight this is it for Humpy, and no one ever can or will be HUMPY.. Gonna miss him walking in the door there..
F5, yeah he will pop back up, and still box the hell out of the kids coming up to see what they have... HUMPY might be getting age on him, but I damn sure wouldnt take that punch..
Yall be safe, have a good time, DJ, looking for you in a bit..
TEAM SHIRT on, probaly on of the only sober ones:)")
Posted by: Kurt2 | May 25, 2008 1:56:26 PM
My problem with Denny was that it sounded like he was saying "I'm a Cup driver, how dare you race me hard in this series. Do you know who I am? You are supposed to get out of my way."
Posted by: Diane
yeah, that's how i saw it too.
plus... the "that's how i roll" comment was about as dumb as it gets.
it's always fun when the crews go at it.
knocking the front edge of the fender in is... mmmm like kurt a couple years ago.
k2
good luck at the track dude.
Posted by: exile | May 25, 2008 12:21:48 PM
Probably it was Jeff policing the area making certain everyone is on the up and up and held to the same standards of competition that HMS is.
Jon, do you have storm cellars and shelters in case. Seems like every topic that comes up somewhere in the discussion reports that severe weather with tornados involved is pummeling you guys.
Posted by: Jon2 | May 25, 2008 12:12:21 PM
Diane,
I agree with you, it had to be someone very close to their garage stall to have seen and reported it to the NASCAR officials.
The tornado's were several miles to our north and northwest and fortunately they were in lightly populated areas. A hog farm wasn't quite so lucky, they had a dozen buildings destroyed, but no loss of life (people or hogs).
Actually here in Oklahoma May is historically when the most severe tornado outbreaks ocurr.
Posted by: Jon | May 25, 2008 11:42:48 AM
Jon - Be interesting to know who is garaged next to the 66 & 70. Maybe they heard or saw something and reported it. Or a Haas crew member might have discussed it with the wrong person. Probably never know.
Kathy & Jon - Hope you dodged the bad weather again.
Posted by: Diane | May 25, 2008 11:08:00 AM
Now I'm not a Denny fan, But BK lifted him under caution..so DH paid him back...Then ol Jr came up and tagged him, Now racin' is racin' But you learn to pick and choose your battles If you got a problem with a driver settle it man to man...not crew to crew
Posted by: Fan #5 | May 25, 2008 11:00:07 AM
Diane,
It sure sounds like someone ratted out the 66 and 70 for the wing mounts, maybe it was DEI (remember they got nailed for illegal wing mounts last year)LOL.
Posted by: Jon | May 25, 2008 9:33:35 AM
K2 - On another subject, it's been reported that the problem with the 66 and 70 was found "as a result of the self-policing by teams in the garage area, that it was brought to NASCAR's attention, they followed up and found it."
Does that mean that another team ratted on the 66 & 70 and does that happen often?
Posted by: Dian | May 25, 2008 8:42:14 AM
Either view you have on it....that was some good stuff last nite. That is what the fans like, right or wrong.Who was right or wrong? All parties. They were right and wrong.Loved the way the 88 raced.Denny was being a jerk as usual. He got his pannies in knot, doing what he has done before and just as Kyle,he gets his pannies in knot. The 88 let him know(I didn't see his rear tires get jacked off the ground as he said) and Denny let him the 88 he didn't approve.IMO,his move was BS and stupid. He could have cut his or the 88 tire down and after the green either one could have hit the wall hard or caused others issues.
What griped my ass was the 2 idiots in the TV booth didn't even offer a thought that it was retaliation and said he was just scrubing his tires??Geez, that was baffleling, but not surprising.
The pit crew deal was entertaining.I do agree the best place to settle any issues is outside the track. It would be nice to see the drivers go toe to toe for once. But I think the majority are chicken shit and just big talkers.I guess that is why I pull for the guys that seem to be the opposite, that would handle business themselves.JMO of course....
Well, heading to the 600.Ya'll enjoy and be safe....
Posted by: DJ | May 25, 2008 8:32:53 AM
K2 - As you said, the stuff that happened between the crews was stupid. It's probably hard not to stand up for your driver but there may be some crew jobs open next week. You might be called in to moonlight LOL.
My problem with Denny was that it sounded like he was saying "I'm a Cup driver, how dare you race me hard in this series. Do you know who I am? You are supposed to get out of my way."
But from what Jr. has said about Brad K. recently, it sounds like Brad has a personality somewhat like Denny's. Maybe he needed to be brought down a notch or two.
K2 - Take care and have a good race.
Posted by: Diane | May 25, 2008 8:21:14 AM
Kurt2,
Denny should have taken his own advice instead of retaliating (sorry, those were his own words), Brad did bump him in the rear and then Denny ran him over and pushed in the front fender of his car intentionally (again, his own words). AS far as crew members goes, you would know better than I and I will defer that to your view on it. But Denny Hamlin is far from innocent in the on track incident and it looks like NASCAR agrees since his crew chief was summond to the principals office after the race.
Posted by: Jon | May 25, 2008 12:17:41 AM
Okay, nice race..
First congrats to Kyle and Braun tonight..
Brad K will get a win soon.
Not sure how to put this in a congenial way..
I should ask the ? of those here as was posed by Jon earlier on Jamie:
Why the hell does the TV have to play the incar of the driver tonight and him publicly state to Lance" I have the best motor and I am going to win"?? Sorry with that caution , yes it was wide open for a win.I think TV needs to back away from the incar crap the way its being done>It makes the driver seem like a ass(heard that on my radio sitting in the pit of a friend).
Next on Denny and Brad K.. I know all of us(including me) are not Denny fans, but he did have a basic point once he got hit to hit Brad K back. Not sure on TV coverage but with about 15-20 to go no room was given even with a clea pass. I MYSELF LIKE BRAD K, personally and as a driver, but you must live in give and take land.
The PIT CREW was nothing but dumb bullshit in any way it can be said.2 Crews coming at the 20 crew, the most intelligent thing IMO Denny H has ever stated period was "It was BS the crews came", Brad and Jr should have came over, not the damn crew guys/From standing there(next door to it) there will be alot of HARD CARDS gone next week, punches were thrown and thats a joke.. Wanna fight go out of the track, hell we are all home..there are enough nooks around here for all hell to break loose away from the track...
Sorry gotta take (pains me to say) Denny on this one

Daly,
Mattioli is not a far cry from Bruton, nor his cohort Bruce S. at all..
Posted by: Kurt2 | May 24, 2008 6:35:03 PM
K2, that rumor has been circulating almost since Wheeler announced his retirement.
As for Mattioli, why do you say that?

K2 I'v heard also about Humpy taking a position with Nascar...at this point it's only speculation...Curator for the HOF?

Daly I agree 100% with you on Bruton, on Dr Mattoli, I will leave that alone, he damn sure isnt a "non bullying saint" himself..
Like I heard a certain GOOD guy whom is a reporter say Thurs night. "nascar is controlled to damn much by the France Family and Bruton"...Nothing against, Big Bill, nor Bill Jr.. Look at the "figurehead " in place now and Jim is running the damn show for him, sad.
Daly, youa re good, where did you hear the tidbit on Humpy and Nascar? Are you stalking Charlotte this weekend?") If so, things will develop over the next 2 to 3 days on many things
Posted by: Kurt2 | May 24, 2008 12:35:27 PM
Smith's luck is going to eventually run out because he's bullied a lot of people in the sport and it's going to come back to him, especially if Humpy goes to work for NASCAR as rumored.
Posted by: Mike Daly | May 24, 2008 12:24:01 PM
Joe Mattioli has long said if he ever did sell Pocono (unlikely) it would be to ISC because the Frances helped keep his track going in the turbulent 1970s.

Radster,
After hearing about this so called Top25 driver list I figured Sr would definitely be in the Top5 and I agree #3 is fitting for his career in NASCAR with 7 championships and 76 wins.
Posted by: Jon | May 24, 2008 11:36:21 AM
Sorry to change the subject but did anybody check out ESPN's top 25 driver's of all time list? I thought it was fitting the THE MAN ended up 3rd. Don't know if I agree with #1 though. I mean I know he was great and all but.....

K2 - There must be something about Jamie that us fans don't know. Maybe it's something personal causing the dislike for him.
Kathy & others interested in the Jimmy Elledge firing by Chip Ganassi - Here's a link to what is being reported as the real story behind this:

Diane, all respect by this but look thru some the the list of the 03 ROTYS . You have Jamie, Biffle, Sprauge as a few. Fukayama(lmao) never made it. Biff has produced higher than Jamie and so has Sprague.
Jimmy F would rather leave than be on the 26 box:) Not a condusive working area with Jimmy F and Jamie.
On Humpy, ummmmm, lets let Humpy go tonight and it will all hit soon. Lets just say , at times we all get fed up with things at work and "speak" clearly our mind to the man on Top and it doesnt set well"0
So now you get Marcus coming in, whoppie cant wait(puke) :)
Posted by: Kurt2 | May 24, 2008 10:58:50 AM
Jon, no biggie, it kinds is Roush2 these days already..
In my own personal opinion Jamie, Elliott S and a few more need to go to Busch and try again:)
Posted by: Kurt2 | May 24, 2008 10:53:22 AM
K2 - I understand your points on the 26 and 6. But to defend Jamie a little, when you start Cup with a win in your 2nd race (in 2002), the only direction you can go is down. I think it's a curse to start out so good. But he was 2003 rookie of the year, had 23 top tens in 2004 & finished 11th in points, had an ok 2005. All of this was in Chip G. equipment. When he went to Roush in 2006 everything started going down hill. I don't think he all of a sudden stopped knowing how to drive a racecar. Maybe the chemistry just has never been right at RFR. I'd like to see what he might have done if he had Jimmy F. on the box.
David Ragan started out with a rough rookie year, so the only direction he could go was up. And he deserves a lot of credit for listening and learning and becoming a really good driver. He might finish in the top 12 in his 2nd full year in Cup just like Jamie did.
Regarding Bruton and Humpy, do you know what happened there? Got to be some reason for it to end the way it did. I don't think anyone will ever be the promoter that Humpy has been. Can't wait to read his book when it comes out.
Posted by: Diane | May 24, 2008 10:35:25 AM
Kurt2,
Thanks for your input to my question about David Ragan, I would imagine with him being 12th in points versus McMurray in 23rd unless something dramatically changes Roush should keep the #6 in his direct stable and move the #26 over to Roush2 (oops, Yates) Racing.
Posted by: Jon | May 24, 2008 10:01:12 AM
the 26 has had ample time to prove its course. When Kurt left, Jamie was to be the best thing since sliced bread there.. he won in the 40 in a car set up for Marlin and little since. He hasnt proven anything, this isnt like it was 5-10 years ago, it now produce solidly and consistently or see you.
On the 6, David Ragan is not getting aot of credit he should this year, last year he was being eaten alive for the mistakes he made during races. He has Jimmy F this year and is taking things in the right direction. If one Crew Chief out here can help and mold a young driver Jimmy F is the best there is.Jimmy F is smart, old school and about the only Crew Chief Jack Roush has never screwed with as Jimmy F is a great guy but taks no crap from anyone period..
Jamie is 23rd in points and Ragan thus far is 12th, Biffle is in the TOP 10, Carl is as well. The 17 is not hitting it this year, because the adaptation of no Robbie R
No one really has to go from Roush Land, all he has to do is "move" a car over to Yates(since he basically owns it:)
Going to be a sad one tonight with Humpy being forced out the door and the new "I AM BRUTON SMITHS SON" entering.Humpy has done so much for so many people for so long.He will be dearly missed

Former Miss Winston Renee White is a current female companion of two-time NASCAR champion Tony Stewart. The two were first spotted by an Answer this... reader having dinner on Lake Norman last October. Their relationship was brought to the attention of race fans Mother's Day weekend when Renee appeared by Tony's side in a victory lane photo celebrating his Nationwide Series win at Darlington Raceway.
Renee, a 1990 graduate of University of North Carolina, Greensboro, served as one of NASCAR's trophy girls in 1991-92, during which time she met and began dating driver Derrike Cope. They were married in 1995 and later divorced in 2004. In 2005, Renee began an on- and off-again relationship with driver Robby Gordon, their latest break up coming in the summer of 2007.
A native of High Point, N.C., Renee still resides in the NASCARolina area. Her birthdate is May 10, 1968.
do you think smoke and rg are going to be teamates??
Posted by: aggie | May 24, 2008 1:30:15 AM
Kathy
Smoke is being very quite about his future
plans and he's enjoying keeping the secret
from the media. There's a rumor now that
he and Dale Jr. maybe going in as partners
on a cup team in 2009.
This is JMO but I think, Tony will no longer
be driving for JGR after this year. I be-
lieve Tony's future deal has already been
signed, sealed and delivered, it's just a
matter of him announcing it to the public.
Kathy, good post, keep up the good work.
HAVE A SAFE MEMORIAL WEEK-END EVERYONE.

Jon
OK, so you are putting the entire blame for
the #26 team not performing squarely on the
shoulders of McMurray and giving the per-
formance of the #6 team entirely to David
Regan.
I'll go along with you on this. McMurray is
getting the blame for the whole team and
it's not totally his fault they are not
performing like they should. Like Diane, I
feel sorry for Jamie, he has worked so hard
to improve his driving skills. I've always
liked Jamie, he seems to be such a nice,
pleasant young man. It seems that the media
and the TV commentators are always talking about C.E., M.K. and G.B. but never Jamie.
Maybe, McMurray should go to RCR, he would
probably have a better team. JMO, but I
don't think, he has got the recognition at
RFR.
Posted by: Dottie | May 23, 2008 11:53:53 PM
DJ,
You're right the David Regan has so much potential and McMurray is a bum and the #26 team should be the one to dumped by Roush.
Posted by: Jon | May 23, 2008 11:07:26 PM
Jon.....my post said nothing of blame.Right?I gave him the credit he deserves.Ragan has been given only a little credit, and that has come as of late.He got more blame than anything wrecking cars in practice and races.Right? All I'm saying is the 26 has had plenty of time to prove his worth and I think the future is the 6 and not the 26....
Beer.......
Posted by: DJ | May 23, 2008 10:39:27 PM
DJ and Jon - Good points by both of you about Ragan and McMurray.
I like them both but for some reason feel a little sorry for Jamie. He just always seemed so nervous. From what I've read he's done everything possible to improve himself - sports therapist, extreme workout routine and diet change. He's improved a little and got back into the top 35.
Plus Ragan has really matured as a driver. I remember last year when Stewart called him a dart without feathers. But he's much better this year.
Maybe Biffle will go elsewhere and RFR will keep both David and Jamie.
