It's the #14 and Office Depot/Old Spice for Stewart in 2009
Tony Stewart had his press conference today and confirmed that his car number would be the #14 and would be co-sponsored by Office Depot and Old Spice. Stewart picked the #14 because of his admiration of A.J. Foyt, someone he considers to be his hero.
It's going to be strange not seeing Tony in #20 Home Depot car that he's made famous and it'll take getting use to, but as long as he's happy, that's all that matters for him and his fans.
Still no word on who'll drive the second car or any timetable where we can expect an announcement on it either. Until they do, we'll just have to keep guessing and hope he picks a good one. I'm hoping Newman.
Also, I wanted to add a congrats to Benson for winning tonight's truck race.
Your thoughts?

That was a crappy race. Why didn't NASCAR and Goodyear do a full test at Indy? They knew the track was ground. The track hasn't changed since last year. This was the first time for the COT at Indy. Plus they didn't use the same tire that was used in the mini test. This joke of a race cheated the fans, the drivers and the crews.
K2 - Do you have any gas left in your tank? You OTW guys sure got a workout today.
Do you think NASCAR should have just let the crew chiefs and drivers decide on their own when they needed to pit after the first two competition cautions? Or did they do the right thing by calling a caution every 10 to 12 laps.

YES... !!!
congrats Rick and Jeff, Jimmie Johnson, Hendrick Motor Sports, Chad and the entire team.
Anybody But A Turdyota... even carl wouldda been better.
a 10 lap tire.
mike helton being so corporate on tv.
a 10 lap tire.
driving 150 laps at 3/4 throttle.
a 10 lap tire.
world class racing.
yeah that's it.

The Dark Side prevails again.

hearing a commercial about those "high tech" innovative goodyear tires makes me kinda smirk
Posted by: exile on Chevy street | Jul 27, 2008 4:57:58 PM
maybe nascrap will call a pit stop announce 10 laps left and drive a stake through this bullshit joke of a "race"
Posted by: exile on Chevy street | Jul 27, 2008 4:56:32 PM
yeah
that's it
turdyota karma from a rule change some peeps are still whinnin about.

somewhere tony george is sayin... i hate these freakin tire companies starting with that f1 bullshit from several years ago.
Posted by: exile on Chevy street | Jul 27, 2008 4:52:01 PM
Well Yall, this is the worst thing I have ever seen. Is it Good Freakin Year or this new Car or Nascar having to eat Crow wearing Egg on their face all weekend from last night and Toyota still kicking ass or what???????????????? They run a few laps and the tires are gone. What The Hell Kind Of Race Is This???????????????????
Posted by: Deb | Jul 27, 2008 4:21:23 PM
All these competition cautions are BS--Nascar's controlling the race even more than they usually do. They've all had enough time to see how long the tires last so leave it to the teams to decide how many green flag laps they want to run before pitting for tires and if the teams miscalculate, that's their bad--kind of like Darlington.

This race is turning into a joke. Goodyear has to go. How many more times can they drop the ball.

If I were Truex, I'd be fishing for that ride and a chance to drive for Richard Childress.
Posted by: Kari
Martin Truex Jr.
should be going after that ride at RCR un-
less DEI makes him their #1 driver.
Posted by: Dottie
truex would be a great fit at RCR.
you would rather be #1 at dei or #4 at RCR ??
is he still pissed off dei screwed up his chance at the chase.
dei seems to drop the ball when it's put up or shut time.
BTW, good luck at indy today K2.
rusty never missed a chance to bagg on newman at penske.
i see mikey wrecked again. his one way to get sponsor tv time.

I'm anxious to see who RCR puts in their new
car. For a while the rumor was Mears, now
some are saying McMurray, both of which
baffle me--they've both had their shots with
top-notch teams and haven't managed to put
together solid records. If I were Truex, I'd
be fishing for that ride and a chance to
drive for Richard Childress.
I agree with you on the above comments and I
don't know why Richard Childress would want
either one of these drivers to drive his 4th
car. As you stated both have had their shots
with top-notch teams. Now don't get me wrong
Mears and McMurray both are nice guys but an
organization like RCR can attract a more
high profile driver. JMO, Martin Truex Jr.
should be going after that ride at RCR un-
less DEI makes him their #1 driver.
Posted by: Dottie | Jul 27, 2008 1:34:08 PM
It seems that Truex got upset by the story when he read it, especially because it wasn't exactly what he told that report. That would upset me also, why even bother doing the interview if the reporter writes what ever he wants.
Posted by: Jon | Jul 27, 2008 12:47:34 PM
Diane,
Oh no, they're Office-Depot-izing him already! Make it stop! ;)
I think Truex is gone from DEI unless they really show him the money to be top dog over there. His season thus far has to be making him wonder what direction that company is heading.

aggie - I think Tony NEEDS a personal clothing sponsor. LOL.
K2 - Are you surprised that Mark Martin is saying he's going to win today?
Becasue of the tire problem, some of the TV guys are saying that the more conservative drivers like MM, Kenseth and Burton have a good chance of winning because they take care of their tires.
I'm glad the Brickyard race is being broadcast overseas to our military. I just heard that Indiana has more military serving in Iraq than any other state.
Posted by: Diane | Jul 27, 2008 11:54:35 AM
Aggie, the only Prius you will see will be in a history book. Not enough metal in those cars to stay together once they start rusting. Bet those 67-69 Camaro's will still be at the cruise-in.
Posted by: 68 SS Camaro | Jul 27, 2008 11:18:17 AM
Aggie, oddly enough Roger P. has NO IDEA what Rusty was talking about and should hit the press on it.. Rusty and Ryan never ever ever liked one another , now they really dont
Posted by: Kurt2 | Jul 27, 2008 10:56:09 AM

Tony in dress shoes and khakis. :)
good one, well u know he definately does have a clothing sponser lol
K2
on the RN siject remember another guy who dint see eye to with RP?? Paul tracey, was 4th up in edmonton he just cnat seem to find $$$, DP and MA had a good run in, she is like a MINI female version of KYB only she dont win just creates headlines
exile
you drive for show and pit for dough$$$$
k2
the way MM is yakking this weekend you would think its his last race at DEI
also you talk about he said she said they said that is coming out between rusty rodger and ryan.......all i know is rusty must have loved just sticking his nose in there and stabbing RN as he leaves, cant to wait to see RN and SW first race together!!! NO CLASS RUSTY!

F5,
Glad you enjoyed the Charlie Daniels concert. He'll be on stage at Indy in little over an hour.
Dottie,
You're right, it was David Newton at espn.com who reported that Truex had signed a 2 yr contract with DEI. Truex was mad but also said he was still involved in "fruitful" negotions with them. I think he will stay where he is.
I saw the photos of the #14. But the biggest surprise was to see Tony in dress shoes and khakis. :)
Posted by: Diane | Jul 27, 2008 8:50:38 AM
come back in 2050 they have low rider prius's lol
Posted by: aggie
2050... ok, but it won't be powered by gas as we know it now. a prius with hydraulics might be kool. bouncie bounch. and, a string of chingadaras above the windshield.
it's still america, so IT'S OK TO NOT LIKE A BUSCH BROTHER if you don't want to.
fans love some drivers and hate others. it's not a skill issue or we would all be sittin around in smoke t-shirts. i'll get a 14 shirt when they're available.
m&m shirt nope. hey they melt in your mouth not in your hand. whippeee.
anyway carl wouldda kicked his skinny little ass without the 6 minutes in the pits.
no oil cooler at the next short track... jack might do that.

On scenedaily.com has some nice photo's of
Tony's cars and I think they are so pretty.
I love the color/designs. There are some
nice photo's of Tony along with his cars
and he looks so damn happy and cute.

I'm not positive but I think the article I
read on Truex was on ESPN.com. I don't know
who to believe but we'll just wait and see.
Tony is Tony and I guess that's what we like
about him. I hope he doesn't get fined for
what he did but he's going to stand up for
what he believes is right.
I'm hoping Ryan Newman will be the driver
for Tony's #4 car. I just wish Tony would
hurry up and announce the driver but what
can we do but wait.
Posted by: Dottie | Jul 27, 2008 1:10:58 AM
I like both Benson and Hornaday, Jon. Both guys are class acts. I've been cheering for Ron since he drove Dale's #16 Napa Chevy.
I think it's super cool that AJ's number will be on Smoke's car. Yeah, that candy apple red is downright sweet but Old Spice might have been shooting for accuracy.
I'd love to know what the real deal is with Truex. ESPN reported this past week that Truex took himself out of the running on some job offers and might now be the odd guy out in the Silly Season musical chairs game. Truex doesn't seem to like what ESPN is reporting about his contract. Ouch.
Posted by: Barb G | Jul 27, 2008 1:01:54 AM
K2,
Maybe I misread you or you misread me--I don't enjoy it when the 48 comes up in the crystal balls so I was happy that he wasn't in yours. Sooooooooo not a fan. I don't mind the 24 at all--I like him just fine.
Aggie,
What's your deal against the 9??? I might have to take back that post-Sturgis invite I sent you...nah, just kidding. ;) I'll just make you drink nasty Budweiser when you get here and pose for a picture next to the Kasey Kahne Drive sign.
Man, my 9 year old looks older than Colin Braun! He was impressive. I was hoping Bliss would get up there too--would've been cool to see a NNS regular win. I've always tried to give Leffler the benefit of the doubt but geez--is there anyone out there he DIDN'T run into tonite?

is kyb just plain unstopable?
tommrow as much as i hate to saw it that 9 team or any team that was fast on the flat corners should do well
sentimentally its the 20 but the 24 has a a great track record
rcr needs to step it up this weekend they have been??? soso the last lil while
31 had a great race with a ?? car last weekend so jb should be a top 10 car
speaking of the 17 nice feature /add in the new 09 harley catalouge with matt
68 ss
How many 68 Turdyota's were at the cruise-in last night? Oh yeah, NONE
come back in 2050 they have low rider prius's lol

Another dominating performance by KyB & JGR. That kid is amazing. The new plate restriction might have helped him at Raceway Park. But the lower HP might be a problem on the larger tracks.
Dottie - The following is now being reported on TR:
"In a brief interview Saturday evening with The Sporting News NASCAR Wire Service, Truex expressed outrage at the report.
"It's (expletive). I don't know what the hell (the reporter) is talking about. He doesn't know what he's talking about," Truex said."
I guess we still don't know what Truex is doing.
Regarding Tony's latest problem, a friend of mine goes to most of the USAC races around central Indiana. He told me that what happened with Tony and the official isn't unusual for USAC. He's seen similar things several times before. But Tony should know better. He needs to stay out of trouble.
Posted by: Diane | Jul 26, 2008 11:20:56 PM
Kurt2,
You are right, I forgot to mention that.
By the way, congrats to Kyle Busch on the win ORP. :)
Posted by: Jon | Jul 26, 2008 11:19:52 PM
Kurt2, thank you.
I pissed everyone I know off when I said I was rooting for the RESTRICTOR PLATED 18, 20, or whoever else had it to win that race.
With recognition to the #2 driver, I guess Logano is not a monkey - he couldn't win in the #20 monkey car. LOL
I agree on Colin, what a great run for him, my hat is off for the man.
I just wonder why they didn't put a restrictor plate on Jeffie and Jimmie when they were sweeping it ll last year, but whatever.
Tomorrow, I hope to see the 11, 18, or 20 team kiss the bricks just to ice the NASCAR cake.

I know you are Hornady fan Jon, but Ron cam eover to repspect Rocket for being a clean racer...
Next.. To all the ones whom "CRIED" over Yota "having a advantage with HP". Hope you enoyed the night as I KNOW HE IS HATED BY MOST HERE.. Kyle B. kicked the shit out of the field.. NOT ONE CAR, but the whole field.. Colin B ran well But take all you want from Kyle. Hate him all you need, but he has done it and will again and again..
Yep Di, saw me some "SLIDE" today... Good show.. Cant wait for the DEVIL went down to GA tommorrow.. Dont think I wqill get to see alot of that:)
BE safe..
Kari,,, glad you liked the balls this week but cant have the change to a 48.. 24 maybe but not a 48":)
You guys be safe

Congrats to Kyle Busch on his Nationwide win
tonight.
Geezer, I wish you the best of health and we
have a lot of love here in Michigan to.
Barb G, I was hoping Tony's car would be a
candy apple red also but I'll hang with him
regardless of the color.
Just read that Martin Truex Jr. has agreed
in principal to a two year deal that will
keep him at DEI through 2010 season.
Regarding the incident at O'Reilly Park be-
tween Stewart and the official, Tony said,
it was a situation (where) we didn't under-
stand a call they made. Tony expects to be
fined by the U.S. Auto Club for the alter-
cation with the official and he admitted if
he had to do it over again he wouldn't have
confronted the official.
Posted by: Dottie | Jul 26, 2008 10:52:10 PM
I think it is pretty cool that Tony decided on the #14 because his hero AJ Foyt drove the #14.
Last nights truck race was pretty decent and even though I am a Ron Hornaday fan and not a Johnny Benson fan, he passed Hornaday clean and deserved the win.
I expect a very close points race until the end and that will make the truck series the most exciting of the three elite NASCAR series.
Posted by: Jon | Jul 26, 2008 8:09:14 PM
Kathy - I'm also hoping that Newman will drive Tony's #4 car and hope the announcement will come soon.
Kari - The Brickyard is usually not an exciting race so probably won't be tomorrow. But every driver I have seen interviewed the last 2 days have talked about how important a Brickyard win is to them and their team. Us fans can be dissapointed in the racing (as we have most of the races this year), but it's wrong when so many know-it-alls at some of the blogs swear that the drivers don't think this is a special race. Those know-it-alls are wrong!!
K2 - Did you see any of the Goo Goo Dolls concert today? Tomorrow is Charlie Daniels.
K2 - How bad is the tire problem? I hope you get your lips covered with grit and rubber from kissing the bricks tomorrow. :=}

Diane,
I was hoping for candy apply red too. The number on the car looks awesome. I'm not really down with Tony shoving the USAC official though--that'll get you nowhere fast as an owner and could come back to bite his teams sometime down the road.
Where the heck does Rusty get off saying anything to the media about what happened with Ryan Newman and Roger Penske? It's not his business and just sounds like more sour grapes. Rusty's mouth, driven by his need for attention, is bigger than his brain. Reminds me of Jeremy Mayfield.
I like K2's balls the best this week. No 48 and no 99. Blech.
What I found interesting in the other blogs about the Brickyard is people arguing about how special a win there is to drivers and teams--they all say it's a huge race to win so who is a mere fan to argue that and say it's just hype talking? I haven't necessarily been impressed with the racing there and I wouldn't go back in person again unless money were no object, but the drivers and teams are pretty clear that it's a very meaningful place for them to race and win. Seeing Tony do it in person in 2005 was beyond cool since he'd been very vocal about his desire to win at "home."
Posted by: Kari | Jul 26, 2008 4:16:33 PM
Geezer - Even though I'm a Midwesterner not a Southerner, I also wish you a full recovery. We are full of love up here too.
I posted my picks earlier. After seeing practice I'm going to adjust them a little, same cars, different finishing order: 48, 24, 20, 18, 83.
Rusty sounds like a little boy whining on the playground. After hearing what Rusty said, here is what Penske had to say: "I have read Rusty's comments and it is important for everyone to understand that I did not fire Ryan. His contract runs though 2008 and we sat down and agreed that we were not going forward beyond this year."
I noticed Rusty's not been on ESPN at all today, even though they are covering practices, quals. and the races for both Cup and NNS this weekend. Maybe he'll show up tomorrow.
Barb G - Tony's cars are pretty but I was hoping the Old Spice car would be Candy Apple Red like the #20 NNS car.
After AJ Foyt heard about Tony shoving a USAC official the other night, he said he was proud of Tony for living up to the #14's reputation. :)

Rusty needs some cheese for his whine, K2. My guess is that Newman refused to genuflect at the altar of Rusty Wallace and he's still miffed about it. Good thing Mr Penske has more class than RW.
Stay well, Geezer. {{{hugs}}}
Tony and red cars work for me. I like him no matter what color car he drives.

Balls only now..
Lets see 2, 8 ,31,20 and 17... Sorry Smoke might be a given but went off the cars themselve in race trim...
Shocking not to see anything here about Rusty (sorry Kathy) spouting off about Ryan N..
'
If I were Rusty I would be more concerned to show my son how to drive a car, than worry about Rogers end...But once again Rustys "interpetation" of the loose facts comes in..
Glad for you Rusty that you bitched to get the HP changed in Busch..But bet your son still wrecks someone tonight as he usually does..
Geezer, we took your back and always will here with the issue you.. We might bicker but we damn sure arent heartless..:) Stay well man and be safe..

I stand humbley corrected. I misunderstood the TV guys, and thought the trucks were included in the Toyota motor rule. They kept talking about the possiblity of the Sprint Series as though all others had been included.
As for loving my brother, I do. But nobody said I had to like him.
Cheers,

Geezer, in case you didn't notice,or read, or paid attention.....they didn't touch the engines in the Truck Series. Just the Nationwide cars. Funny how people like you bitch about Toyota yet I don't recall seeing you complain about Chevy winning (virtually) everything last year. Seems to me the most common line on that was that everyone else needed to work harder. Well maybe whoever you pull for needs to work a little harder. Love your Christian themed "pencil headed geek" comment as well, nothing like love your brother. Oh well, typical.....
Posted by: canucken | Jul 26, 2008 9:16:09 AM
Geezer,
We won't know until tonight, as far as I know, they didn't touch the truck engines.
Posted by: Kathy | Jul 26, 2008 8:32:30 AM
I'm waiting to hear the complaints about NASCAR coming down on the Toyota's souped up engines.
Did anybody notice that "Peewee's Fun House" didn't jump out if front and dominate the night as he has in the past truck races this season? Couldn't even get a top ten. If Toyota had the motor advantage in the Craftsman and Nationwide series, do they have it in the Sprint Cup? If they do, then the pencil headed geek had better loosen his little narrow tie, he's goin' down! I hope, I hope, I hope.
And one more time, thanks for your prayers and good thoughts. Kathy you and your fellow bloggers are living proof that we folk here in the southland care for one another even if we are total strangers. It just further ampliflies the old axiom, "American by birth, Southern by the Grace of God".
Love to you all, time for a re-fill.

And if rumours are true, I'll have to replace my #12 Alltel hat as well.
So, Smoke-Ass Racing has already garnered at least $100 cash inflow from the "Tony Stewart Effect" they wanted when they "gave" him half the team. Sponsors, Fans (me!) and paraphernalia sales!
