Big wreck mars race at Watkins Glen
The race was going along fairly tame until the big wreck on lap 83, that collected nine cars. McDowell and Gilliland got together and caused the big wreck, obviously something had been going on previously with those two since NASCAR wants to see both of the in the trailer.
It took over a half an hour to clean up the track, many cars were badly mangled, it looked more like Bristol then Watkins Glen. Luckily for most of the drivers, they were checked out and released from the infield care center, all but Bobby Labonte who was taken to a local hospital for further evaluation. Hope his injuries aren't too bad.
Once again, it took NASCAR officials a while to get to the cars, Bobby had already walked away from his car toward the pit area, it was obvious he was hurting. I just don't understand what took officials so long to get to the drivers after the wreck, Bobby wasn't the only driver to exit his car before officials arrived.
Kyle Busch won the race again, like it's any surprise to anyone, looks like it's definitely his championship year. Tony Stewart came in 2nd and Marcos Ambrose, who started 43rd, came home in 3rd, followed by Montoya and Truex.
Hopefully word will come down soon that Bobby is OK.
Your thoughts?

Diane,
Lighten up darling.
You were very nice, and I replied in a very nice manner back atcha.
Do you think my "obsession" with winners might just turn me into an axe murderer or something? Really now.
Looks like my guy might be in 13th and momentarily out of the Chase after today's debacle.

J2 - I was trying to be nice to you but you just can't accept it. Your obsession with HMS is not healthy. In fact it's kinda sick.

Exile,
You'd think. I don't forsee Steve being Jeff's CC in 2009.

"It's a loop that's unaffordable," Roush said. "I can't afford to do a new engine for Nationwide right now. NASCAR can establish parity with the tests that they've done or they can leave it be.
"If they leave it alone, they will establish not only the Truck series, but also the Nationwide series as a single manufacturer's bastion."
so
if trucks becomes a turdyota only series
what's it prove if you only beat yourself ??

Exile,
You are most welcome.
Diane,
Great equipment, great chassis', but if the drivers stink, the other things don't mean squat as in the case of the current HAAS stable.
Tony is depending on HMS to help him get in the winning circle more consistently in 2009 and the hiring of HMS personnel illustrates that dependency.

J2 - I appreciate you wanting HMS to be a big part of SHR. I really give you credit for promoting them. But HMS has been a big part of Haas/CNC and they have had no success. So IF SHR is successful in the future, HMS should not get the credit. That credit should go to Tony, Ryan and the people and organization they put together.

From over at Jayskis -
"Grubb to be Stewart's Crew Chief in 2009? Darien Grubb, ENGINEERING MANAGER FOR HENDRICK MOTORSPORTS' (my caps) #5 and 88 Chevys, is the lead candidate for the crew chief position for Tony Stewart's #14 Chevy in 2009...Grubb, those same sources said, has been offered a contract. Stewart-Haas officials declined to comment Saturday. If Grubb ultimately opts to accept Stewart-Haas' offer, it would add yet another layer to the Hendrick/Stewart-Haas relationship. SHR will run Hendrick chassis and engines -- as Haas/CNC Racing currently does -- and having an established Hendrick disciple in-house would only INCREASE THE CRUCIAL LINE OF COMMUNICATION BETWEEN THE TWO ORGANIZATIONS. (my caps)"
Stewart - HAAS will still be Rick's satellite org.
The superstars are aligned with the Dark Side now.

F5 - The magnets weren't found in post race inspection. But they were found when the cars were put on the dyno. So am I right to assume the magnets could have been put on by crew members after the drivers were out of the cars? I posted earlier that the drivers might have done the bad deed. I don't want to accuse them if someone else could have put the magnets in the cars.

I have a good idea on who that owner is too Diane since he always finds something to whine about. I once heard him whining about the Chevvies while he was standing in Victory Lane with his driver.
OMG....the drags, Dottie! My BF way back when I was 19 years old raced at the local drag strip and I was his pit crew. lmao I gapped spark plugs and changed tires on the dang car. The things you do when you're young, stupid and in love!
Posted by: Barb G | Aug 17, 2008 11:42:18 AM
K2 - I have a good idea who that owner might be. Same one that always complains.
Posted by: Diane | Aug 17, 2008 11:17:13 AM
Dottie,
'
skewing the data on the dyno is a major FUBAR...They are going to get severly slapped Tuesday by NASCAR..
F5, as soon as the race was over they did "SWARM" the JGR cars..A certain person (owner) was bitching, so NASCAR feel in line and took a peek..
BarbG, you saw it right but for some reason "Clint wanted moe room".. MIS is big enough he had plenty room.. Seems this is becoming Clint now in teh Busch series each week
Posted by: Kurt2 | Aug 17, 2008 11:07:06 AM
F5 - Tim Brewer said on ESPN that the only way magnets could have been put on the 18 & 20 NNS gas pedals after the race was for the drivers to do it. Would Stewart (a new Cup owner) or Logano (a new Cup driver) risk their reputations by doing that? Do you know of another way it could have been done?

Barack Hussein Obama, asked the question by the good reverend how he worked across the aisle replied, and I'll paraphrase -
"I worked with the other side on ethic legislation."
Fact. Barack Hussein Obama was a co-legislator with John McCain, the sponsor of the ethic's bill, but eventually toed the Dem line on this important piece of legislation by leaving John high and dry, which resulted in a pretty direct letter to BHO from McCain referring to Barack Hussein Obama as a person of little principle.
And BHO is the guy whose going to bring change to Washington by reaching out?
And regarding abortion, BHO didn't feel he had the pay scale to address that issue.
This guy is laughable.

BROOKLYN, Mich. -- Darien Grubb, engineering manager for Hendrick Motorsports' Nos. 5 and 88 Chevrolets, is the lead candidate for the crew chief position for Tony Stewart's No. 14 Chevrolet in 2009, sources close to Stewart-Haas Racing told ESPN.com on Saturday.
Grubb, those same sources said, has been offered a contract.

Ok I'm not a rocket scientist here or a rocket fuel speciaist for that matter but wouldn't putting a magnet on the accelerator make it stick to the floor?
Posted by: Fan #5
i'm guessing the floor is made out of aluminum. the magnet sticks to the bottom side of the gas pedal and keeps it from going all the way down.
so
maybe after all
it was a cheater org, and not "the blessing from jesus raining down" on the gibbs teams that made them so freakin fast so far.
i'm sure the cheater gibbs teams guy leaned in and stuck the magnet to the pedal after the race or they would have just detuned the engine.

Those 67 Chevelle's are beautiful. The
"Dream Cruise" started Fri. and ends Sun.
There are some Chevelle's in the cruise. I
love watching all of those beautiful cars
cruising along for miles. That 55 Chevy
will be gorgeous when he gets it restored.
I grew up going to the drag strip with my
brothers and I had one brother who raced
motorcycles. My whole family has a love for
cars and racing.
Let's hope the race tomorrow is a good one.

Ok I just read it on T/R...doesn't say if the "magnets" where in place during the race...and Nascar officials swarm the cars for post race inspections...things that make you go Hmmm

Do you really think the two CC will be fired
or will they be fined, put on probation, etc.
Is this problem more serious than anything
that has previously happened when it comes
to cheating?

I like Casey Mears and I'd love to see him get some good stuff to drive for a change. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that he ends up in an RCR car.
I was very concerned that RC would bail out of racing when we lost Dale, K2. Heck, I almost bailed out of racing when it happened and I was only a fan of The Man. I think RC is a good man and I have a ton of respect for him.
I don't know where Clint wanted David to move to. From what I saw David held his line and Clint sideswiped him.
JGR's NNS teams will probably be a little lighter in the bank account, a little farther behind in the points race and have two vacationing CCs after the dyno test. From the tone of the article on the front page I don't think NASCAR is amused.
My brother-in-law has a restored '67 Chevelle, Dottie. He has tons of trophies from the cars shows he has entered. My other half is jonesing for a '55 Chevy project car to mess with when he retires next year. It was a beautiul day in the Poconos today too.
Posted by: Barb G | Aug 17, 2008 1:36:56 AM
It doesn't surprise me anymore when I
hear that a team has cheated. I just hate
that it had to be the #20 team though.
Also, I hate it for the #18. NASCAR said
there will be a penalty but it will be
handed down early next week.
Thank goodiness it was the NationWide Series
and not the Cup.
Posted by: Dottie | Aug 17, 2008 1:16:55 AM
F5, feel free to chime in here.. This was the Busch series race and 2 CC" s asses are about to get fried after that dyno test?stunt///
Oddly enough Vickers had a good damn day with the lovely rules placed on Yota for HP....
Kyle, Smoke, Hamlin and Cup cars are clean...
Jeff B will have a Top 10 tommorrow Jo Ann...
Dottie, RC almost left when Sr died, he came back, took some time, but the lack of support for Casey isnt fair across the board period...:)
Richard doesnt FUBAR, well that is since Jeff Green:)LOL...

K2, How in the sam hell did SHR get the #4 form Mclure?
Posted by: Fan #5 | Aug 17, 2008 12:59:15 AM
Me too, Diane. I don't think they have ever done anything like this before.
Posted by: Graceann | Aug 17, 2008 12:00:22 AM
Graceann - It sounds like they put the magnets on the accelerator pedals to keep them from going all the way to the floor. It blows my mind that a team as good as JGR would pull something like this.
Posted by: Diane | Aug 16, 2008 11:34:27 PM
What's going on with the #18 and #20? I just read something about a magnet on the dyno test? Major penalties? What do the magnets do? Anybody got a clue?

Dottie and aggie
Agree to disagree on Casey 150%.
I agree, we'll just agree to disagree, O.K.
Richard Childress is a super person and a
very smart business man. I just hope whoever
ends up driving the 4th. car turns out to be
a good driver for him.
I would like to see Brian Vickers make the
chase for the championship this year. I was
hoping he would win today in the NationWide.
Posted by: Dottie | Aug 16, 2008 11:11:32 PM
The 31 Team has a top 10 car this week. I'm hoping for no bad luck after three weeks of bad luck.
Some of the other drivers may not have wanted to go to a car with no owner's points.
I don't know how true this is, but I'm reading the reason for the driver swap with the 07 and 33 is because General Mills isn't comfortable with Casey Mears in their car because of the Kellogg's sponsorship.
That's why RC is asking Nascar for a swap in owner's points for the 07 and 33. Mears in the 07 with Jack Daniels, Clint in the 33 with General Mills as the sponsor, but Clint to retain the 07 points.
Posted by: Jo Ann | Aug 16, 2008 11:02:36 PM
That's why I can't stand Bowyer, Diane. It's a pretty wide track but wanted to use the entire thing and Reutimann and his pretty fast car were inconveniently there--so *obviously* Reut should have backed off. God forbid anyone make Bowyer earn his JV championship. Hopefully Mr. Ed's win today doesn't bode well for his sweep chances tomorrow.
Posted by: Kari | Aug 16, 2008 11:01:59 PM
K2 - Thanks for your comment on Bowyer and Reutimann. I asked the question earlier on the blog who was to blame. I agreed with David but what Bowyer said was that Reutimann should have given him room or in so many words "get out of my way". This isn't the 1st, 2nd or even 3rd time that Clint has done this.
Posted by: Diane | Aug 16, 2008 10:49:32 PM
Dottie and Aggie.
Agree to disagree on Casey 150%.. AS Dottie said he is a good driver and as Aggie stated " a 3 or 4 pick driver"
If the reflection of every since Ricky Hendrick passed......
(F5, help me here).....
Brian Vickers- can be in the points race (15th now)
Kyle Busch- nuff said
Casey Mears- it is the 5 car R&D till next year with Mark M..
THe above 2 have proven themselves since they left HMS..
Sorry to you both and not mean but when you leave there. You win..
Proven fact, might take a year or 2 but its proven with those 2 already..
yeah Casey got shit with Chip G and now he gets crap over at a certain car..Popular to the vote you cant own 4 to 5 cars and "spread the wealth"..
RC isnt a dumb man and didnt lose at all:)
To Bowyer, stop bitching and race.. F5, Reuit. was in the right .. Clint is becoming a crying ass..

rcr is the one that I think got all??? up
with the free agency deals and I think that
4th. driver might be interm until 2010 when
more drivers are available.
cm seems to me who they want but does g
mills want him or cb?? rcr missed out on all
the free agents and now have to take a C or
D driver like cm for that 4th. car...bl
really caught rcr by surprise with his
loyality and staying at PE.
aggie, I agree with you. I think RCR lost
out big by not getting one of the better
drivers. Don't get me wrong I think, Casey
Mears is a nice person but just being a nice
person doesn't win races. Mears has drove
for two other teams, couldn't make it, so
does he think he can make it at RCR, I don't
think so but it's JMO. I'm wondering to if
General Mills will go with C.M. Most of the
big name sponsors want to sponsor a good
driver and C.M. is not in that category. I
was hoping RCR would sign a much better
driver than C.M.

Dottie - I love the cruise ins. We have a few small ones in my area each summer, anywhere from 50 to 150 cars. When I was 15, my Dad found this beat up 57 Ford convertible for me. We restored it to original condition, black with red top and interior. It's still the prettiest car I've ever owned.
For anyone who watched the NNS race, what's your opinion of the Bowyer/Reutimann deal. I always thought that if you held your line, you weren't to blame. David held his but Clint didn't. Clint's blaming David for not giving him more room. Is he right?

You're right, the weather here in Michigan
is absolutely beautiful. A great week-end
for the races.
Also, this is the week-end for the "Dream
Cruise" on Woodward Avenue. There are
thousands of antique cars in the cruise and
people come from every state to drive in the
cruise. People are lined up along Woodward
Avenue for miles to watch the cars as they
go by. My brother has a 67 Chevy Impala and
he is driving in the cruise today. His Chevy
is gorgeous and it's all original. This is a
big week-end here in Michigan.

K2 - I hope you're enjoying that great Michigan weather. It's beautiful up there this time of year. Good luck this weekend.

Chances are it will be a Roush ride winning... Damn its nice here, with Moose Balls, no DALY and a good car..
I threw 6 in as I have a feeling he might make the Chase.. Ragan is a good kid and has a awesome CC......But doesnt drive for HMS and gets little press by comparison..
