NASCAR makes history with rain tires at Montreal
Well, we kept hearing it might happen, but it never did, until now. The rain tires actually were used in a NASCAR race. The crews got three minutes to get the rain tires on, if the teams chose to, they could put the windshield wiper on. Most teams did put on the windshield wiper, but some elected not to, for whatever reason. I honestly don't know why they all didn't use the wipers, but I guess it's a teams or drivers preference.
Of course, the rain slowed down the pace of the race and it was funny at first that it didn't appear that they were going much faster than under caution speed, but as the rain slowed, some drivers got more confident and picked up their pace. Marcus Ambrose seemed fairly confident in his car and those rain tires and had a pretty large lead for most of the race, but a speeding penalty hurt him and put him down to third, and almost a lap down to race leader Ron Fellows. Then the caution for heavy rain came, a couple cars wrecking under caution, the red flag and then they called the race.
Congrats to Ron Fellows and the #5 team for the great strategy, it go them the win and they deserved it. I would have liked to see it go back to green and see if Ambrose could get the lead back, but for once I do agree with NASCAR on the call to call the race. I do think that if they had gone back to green Ambrose probably would have won, but we'll never know.
Edwards took over second in points over Brad Keselowski, but not by much, it'll still be a battle with those two to see who can get second when the season is done, I think Bowyer is going to win the championship unless they really mess up.
As far as the rain tires, I think they worked as they were suppose to and the best they could, hydroplaning is always an issue with water on the track even with tires that have tread. Many drivers complained as it rained harder about hydroplaning and visibility, especially under that last caution, which caused a couple of mishaps for Logano and Villeneuve. I think the visibility issue was the main reason NASCAR called it, although I'm not completely sure of that, I think that if the rain had slowed down they probably would have been able to finish the race, but visibility wasn't improving at all throughout the race.
Your thoughts?

K2,
That book looks awesome. How far into it are you? I love military history, especially books about the more recent conflicts, though I haven't read much lately b/c of the baby.

I was surprised at how good Steven Wallace
did in the road race today. He would
probably be a much better driver if he was
driving for someone other than his dad
(Rusty Wallace). I'm sure he's under a lot
of pressure driving for Rusty.

From the bosses mouth:
"the fans wanted to see a race with rain tires , windshield wipers and did.. Which was a total cluster and messed up cars that needed to get messed up".. thats the PG version..
Everyone bitches about no rain tires.. That race, since we had nothing else to do all damn day in POCO HELL but watch it, was a total mess.. Should not have happened , sorry as this will piss alot of you off...
Now:
"Marcos Ambrose was the class of the field. Does he have a Cup ride next week? I love his attitude--I smile whenever he's interviewed. Same for Carpentier. I'm a sap so I was fine with seeing Fellows win.
By Kari"
Marcos has a full ride with JTG next year (Brad Daughtery) and friends.. As bad as it hurts the damn Wood Brothers lost that......
Kari, not sure but look at the book I listed I was reading on the end of the last blog..

Kari,
I am with you I want to see a NNS regular win a championship. Marcus Ambrose definitely deserve a full time ride.

I thought it was fun to watch until it clearly got out of hand, weather- and safety-wise, BEFORE Nascar threw the final red flag. Logano was impressive and who the heck knew Steven Wallace could road-race that well??? For all the grief the kid gets for being a wreckfest much of the time, I have to give him kudos today.
The international fans might like them but I think international races are ridiculous--too far and too expensive for teams to travel (especially the non-Cupsidized teams) for too small a purse. Hello, Nascar, there are plenty of tracks right here in the United States that could use a shot in the arm and still put on a good show.
Marcos Ambrose was the class of the field. Does he have a Cup ride next week? I love his attitude--I smile whenever he's interviewed. Same for Carpentier. I'm a sap so I was fine with seeing Fellows win.
This Army girl will be rooting hard for that Navy car from here on out...oh, that was practically blasphemy for me to type...but still...I so want to see a NNS-only guy win that trophy this year.

Congrats to Ron Fellows and the #5 team on
their win.
I hated to see Carl Edwards take 2nd. place
in points away from Brad Keselowski and I
wish Brad the best of luck in retrieving
second place. I agree with Kathy, it looks
like Clint Bowyer is going to win the
championship unless they start to mess up.
Maybe, its just me but I hate to see a Cup
driver win the championship again.
Marcus Ambrose had a good day and who knows
if the race had continued he might have won.
NASCAR was wise in calling the race since
visibility was so bad for the drivers.
Kathy good post as always.

John,
I have to agree, maybe NASCAR should give up the idea of having International races.

Graceann,
Last I read forecast for Long Pond, PA is intermittant clouds, no rain. :)

That Montreal Race was about as bogus as Indy. And leave it to Nascar to put the screws to Marcos Ambrose, so a Canadian could take the win. What a farce!
Hope Pocono is better tomorrow.

Jon: Didn't mean to start a post on the other blog an disappear, this stupid laptop went brain dead on me and just now got it running. Maybe the owner (me) went brain dead. Who knows, either way didn't mean to run out on you guys. What's the weather forecast for snooze-fest tomorrow? Didn't catch the much yesterday or today, the big Hot Rods are in town and I have been drug to the cruise and shows for the past 2 days. When your over run by the male population in one household you get out voted in week-end outings

Well NASCAR finally got its rain tire test, but I don't it went very well. There was too much water on the track and visiblity was a huge issue, as Kathy said, it caused JV and JL to wreck themselves out.
I hope that NASCAR reconsiders using the rain tires on roads courses and just calls the race if it is past halfway or continue the race the next day.
