NASCAR bans testing
NASCAR announced this morning that it is banning testing for all three of the top series, Cup, Nationwide and Truck at all NASCAR sanctioned tracks in 2009. This includes all the pre-season testing done at Daytona prior to the Daytona 500 weekend.
According to NASCAR, this will save teams a lot of money. In theory it makes sense, but what about the larger teams that will test outside of the NASCAR sanctioned tracks like they did with the COT before it went full-time. Granted these tracks are not exactly the same, but will the larger teams of HMS, RCR, JGR, etc. test at thest non-sanctioned tracks? I guess we'll have to wait and see.
Your thoughts?

I'm reading Hammond on foxsports.com and he writes about the test ban, "it's to help the guys that are one-car operations that ae struggling. These are the guys that are going to get the big benefit. BTW, we've never done this before, so how do you know it won't work?"
Here's how, Jeff -
NASCAR first limited testing in 1990 and the argument was the same one advanced here - it will help the smaller teams, it will save teams money, etc.
It failed completely. One year into testing limits, the in-house paper Winston Cup Scene did a story on the limit and literally every crew chief they interviewed said the lmits were not working - they weren't saving anyone money and were making it too hard to improve the cars. By the end of the 1990s the monopoly of multicar teams was the legacy of the biggest single mistake NASCAR ever made - that simple rule change of 1990.
Hammond also waxes poetic about Johnson andHendrick ad Chad Knauss and how they were able toimprovise, overcome, adapt - never mind they had a nine-figure racing budget to work with while almost everyone else they raced against was priced out of contention as soon as the season began.

Graceann, "HAPPY ANNIVERSARY" and enjoy.

Congrats to Johnny Benson & the #23 Team on
winning the Truck Series Championship.
Johnny didn't have the best truck nor the
best pit strategy but he won the champion-
ship and I'm happy for him. He was so
emotional, he almost had me crying to.
Congrats to Todd Bodine and the whole team
on winning the race.

Graceann,
Depends. Where is he and what is he doing? Nah, I say cut him some slack b/c I'm the forgetful one in our house so I can relate. ;)
Congrats to JB and team. That race DID NOT disappoint--wow!!

I agree with Kari, except I might be a tad bit whiny over JJ. He is just to damn elegant for me. Don't get me wrong, people say KK is a pretty boy and that's ok cause he is very pretty. lol Damn if JJ can be elegant then KK can be pretty!! Give me a break, OK It's my anniversary 21 years,(23 together) and guess who forgot? Here I sit all alone. Tell me fellers should I be mad, or cut him some slack?

Kari, as fans, it's our prerogative to like
drivers and to dislike others, for WHATEVER
reasons...or for no apparent reason.
Kari, right on girl, EXCELLENT POST. Like
you, I just want to see some good racing.

K2,
Can't speak for the other two guys but I'll probably be too choked up to celebrate by singing when Puff's Awesome Threepeat Adventure concludes on Sunday.
Is this the last race that you'll be a pitcrew member? Sometime ago I picked up that this year was your last. Are you going to stay in the NASCAR industry?

K2...man I could use a adult beverage and a little sun say down that way......
I always liked the 31.To me he is the best spokeperson in the garage for Nascrap. He tells it like it is without being too pc correct but just enough bark to satisfy the hard core like myself.
Di...I was liking the guy while he was in the 22 truck. Then they started interviewing him and the demeanor didn't set well and then the comments about Arca sealed my thoughts on him.He has done a great job keeping what AJ did to keep the 84 in the top 35.Not.He may need more than a pedicure after causing a costly wreck on Sunday.
Good for Ruit......too bad that BS deal with the Shootout got nixed. That was a major bone headed move to get rid of that and makes qualifying less interesting....

As fans, it's our prerogative to like drivers and dislike others, for WHATEVER reasons...or for no apparent reason. I just don't like Jimmie Johnson. I just don't like JPM. I just don't like Jeff Green. I just don't like Clint Bowyer and I *mostly* just don't like Carl Edwards. Everyone's entitled to their white hats and their black hats--that's what being a fan is all about. I won't be all "whiny" if Johnson wins again. I'll say, "Damn. Nice teamwork...Now is it time for Daytona yet?" and get on with the rest of my life.
Tonite, I don't care who wins. I like Hornaday and Benson both. I'm just looking forward to some killer racing.

K2 - That's why I cheer for Burton and his team. The whole group is classy including the owner.
Even though I love the Harvicks, my money is on Benson tonight. Ron already has his championships, now Johnny needs one :)))
Posted by: Diane | Nov 14, 2008 6:25:27 PM
K2, I like both Johnny Benson and Hornaday
but I'm kinda leaning towards Johnny to win
the championship but if Hornaday wins it
that's o.k. to.

One of the many reasons I respect Jeff Burton
""It boils down to pride," Jeff Burton said when asked what motivates him at this point in the season. "What are you going to do? Are you going to lay down and cry about it, or are you going to go to work and bust your ass and try to be better. And that's the course we're going to take.
"What we have to do is we have to refocus, to not dwell on the fact that we're not championship caliber any more. So my mindset is to prove to myself, for my team to prove to themselves and to each other that we can regroup in the face of disappointment and focus on the positives."

Congrats to David Reutimann on winning his
first career pole for Homestead. Also to
Scott Speed who ended up in 2nd.
Posted by: Dottie | Nov 14, 2008 5:58:38 PM
DJ - Speed might be interesting to watch next year but his comments about the ARCA series ticked me of.
Congrats to Reutimann for the pole. Should be an interesting start with Speed on outside pole. Funny that Mears in 12th is the best starting HMS driver. Bet JJ won't know what to do without that #1 pit stall.
Aggie - Check it out, JMac is starting 7th. Hope he goes to Yates next year and gets into the Chase just to spite Roush.
Posted by: Diane | Nov 14, 2008 5:49:55 PM
Well DJ gotta say many teams are running some different looks at the start of the race.
Note where alot of cars are sitting to start..
Yippe, pink toenails can cause the big one.
There is a hell of tiki bar right down the road in Key Largo DJ......
Posted by: Kurt2 | Nov 14, 2008 5:35:11 PM
Nice K2.....
Yeah Di,ARCA was pretty good this year even though toe nail painter didn't think much of it.Geez, can't like that guy.....
So he can qualify second in Vickers car?Can you say wreck early......
Posted by: DJ | Nov 14, 2008 5:21:24 PM
Gretchen - ARCA was pretty good this year too. The lower series are usually the best racing.
kent - I was at Anderson Speedway (formerly Sun Valley) a few weeks ago.
Posted by: Diane | Nov 14, 2008 4:39:13 PM
Did someone say "Hooters"?What is good when you can see TaTa's and racing at the same time !Gretch.....pulling for JB tonite.I too want a good rock em sock race.
I hear ya Kent.Ol' Hillenberg is smiling to that news of no testing.I got to believe he got some help from some teams money wise when he built that 3/8 mile track at the ROCK.JJ has tested and the 2 this week.I don't think there is a whole lot you can do to the COT anyway,so the testing may be somewhat of a waste.
No beach trip as the littleman made a trip to the ER last nite with a viral problem.Scary but the CT came back .normal as I thought he might have some issues.Got to watch him close as his balance has been off and trouble walking.
Enjoy the truck race. Here is hoping the 48 finds issues Sunday.Yep,I'm hating on him Larry.Just not into elegant drivers that carry themselves with grace.Give me Robert Pressley and RG anyday regardless of how crappy they may run!LOL!

Gotta go against you tongight Grethcen..
Only hope Happy isnt a factor....
But if any one is playing Teblow I am with you:)
J2, Larry, Bob and Moe,
To your JJ lovefest you were sharing in the last blog. I glady provided a public service annoucement.. No fear its just one blog back. AS it is i can envision you 3 dancing to that song:)
Posted by: Kurt2 | Nov 14, 2008 4:23:15 PM
I mean of course the "hooters" racing series. NOT ta ta's. I guess watching TaTa's may be as entertaining for some as racing, but I was refering to the racing series.
Posted by: Gretchen | Nov 14, 2008 4:08:31 PM
Penske is a have not!! As in "have not won much of $hit in years" LOL!!!
I am pulling for Hornaday tonight----sorry K2. ( Actually I want to see some competitive racing, and for 3 years running, one has to watch Hooters, Craftsman, and even those weird looking cars in the Rolex something or another, to see that)
Posted by: Gretchen | Nov 14, 2008 4:07:08 PM
Oh Great, NASCAR gives a crappy car in the COT. Now to compound the stupidity, now they stop testing for the car. You think we've had lousy racing now, just wait, it's gonna get worse! Wish SPEED would just telivise Sat. night short track racing like Anderson Speedway, Bring on the Figure 8's!!!

Kurt2
Any word on if Earnhardt-Gannassi racing will us chevrolet or dodge? Also have you heard who will have control Teresa or Chip?
Posted by: Patricia | Nov 14, 2008 2:07:48 PM
K2, you said it best. The "haves" test, the
"have nots" wont.
Posted by: Dottie | Nov 14, 2008 1:38:48 PM
Jon,
Yep i was agreeing with you:)
Brian France, now thats a name and example of whom NOT to have run a business. He makes some of the CEOS from SACHS, AIG look like saints..
The Woods lose the Air Force next year, BDR dropping people the shop.. Come Monday many more folks will be jobless.
Just want to see Rocket get the Trophy tonight. But then again Rons team owner is running.
Posted by: Kurt2 | Nov 14, 2008 1:24:22 PM
Wasn't Penske going to build a track at his facility for testing purposes? If that's still in the plans, this won't hurt him too much either, of course he's not really one of the have nots anyways.
Posted by: Kathy | Nov 14, 2008 1:14:55 PM
Andy Petree said if he was one of the mega owners, he would build a speedway right away just to use for testing.
Maybe Brian wants to weed out the small teams. If so, he's doing a pretty good job of it. :(
Posted by: Diane | Nov 14, 2008 1:11:09 PM
So really in essence nothing has changed. The "haves" test, the "have nots" wont
That's exactly what I was thinking, so the smaller teams will just fall further behind and the big ones will stay status quo.
Posted by: Kathy | Nov 14, 2008 1:02:53 PM
Pretty much what I was saying, you cannot count on NASCAR to do anything right, Brian France is a utter joke as a leader.
Posted by: Jon | Nov 14, 2008 12:40:03 PM
As I said another joke of a rule from Brian.
Its a lovely smoke screen geture, but just that, now we cant test at any track we race at but damned if we cant at VIR, Pickins. on and on..
So really in essence nothing has changed. The "haves" test, the "have nots" wont
Posted by: Kurt2 | Nov 14, 2008 11:58:20 AM
The ban became necessary to protect the smaller teams and nothing more, the multicar teams spending 8 figures on testing benefited greatly from the testing.
So now the smaller teams will save the $$$ and supposedily be on a level playing field. But, as Kathy correctly stated what is to stop the multicar teams from using non-NASCAR sanctioned tracks ( all be it not the exact same tracks)to do their testing.
