Typical California Race - Boring
California showed us it's typical style, a boring follow the leader race. Sure there was some lead changes, but it was typical of California, the leader gets out front and takes off. For most of the race, it seemed like there were only four cars racing for the win, the rest following further back...the strong cars of the night were Kenseth, Biffle, Gordon, Johnson and the Busch brothers.
The race was slowed mosly due to small rain showers going through, but never enough to bring out the red flag. To sum it up, it was a rather ho-hum race.
Congrats to Kenseth for the win...making it two in a row.
Your thoughts?

The perfect ending would be to give Matt a couple of Poweraide bottles to knock off his car.
Biff cut almost six seconds off the lead. No way would Matt have stayed ahead if Biff hadn't slid through the pits.
Personally, I loved this race because it was a race where the fastest driver (with the best pit crew)won. It's kinda like a pitchers' duel, where only the real fans get entertained while the casual fan gets bored.

I think this was great for Kenseth because it really legitimizes his Daytona win. If he didn't run strong this week then it would have only fueled all the critics, myself included, that he lucked into a win last week. But by leading the most laps, and winning the race tonight, I think he shows that he did deserve to win the Daytona 500.
As for the overall race itself. I really don't have a problem with it. Not every race can have 50 different lead changes like Daytona and Talladega. Not every race is going to have a lot of cautions like Bristol or Dover. As bad as California may seem to the fans, at least it's not like Ned Jarrett winning the Southern 500 by 14 laps.
I think if you go back and look at all the old time races, you'll see that they're not as exciting as people think they were. It's really the finishes that are exciting and nothing more. The 76 and 79 Daytona 500's for example. If not for the last lap wrecks in those races would either of those races have been memorable? Doubtful. Or when Earnhardt spun out Labonte at Bristol at the end of that one race? Or that race at Richmond, that Kyle Petty won after Waltrip and Earnhardt got together on the last lap? That's all fans really remember. They remember the exciting finishes but forget how boring the rest of the race was. All California needs is a good finish like the one between Elliott Sadler and Kasey Kahne in 2004. If there are more of those finishes at Cali then maybe people will stop complaining so much. Then again, maybe not.
