Where's the racing?
Well...I know this isn't one of the most exciting tracks for racing, but come on, I think this was the most boring Texas race.
It seems like a lot of the teams missed the setup or the track changed that much from practice, but it seemed like there were only a few teams that didn't have trouble with the handling of the car. Then add in that this is one of the "follow the leader" tracks and it makes for a rather boring race. Maybe the gusty winds and cooler temperature had more of an effect on the handling of the cars as compared to practice on Friday and Saturday than what was anticipated. Hopefully the next time they go to Texas it'll be a better race.
Congrats to Gordon for his first Texas win.

Great Nationwide race today, especially since Kyle "egomaniac" Busch lost again. Great job by #20 team, he should stick with the series that he actually can drive in and leave the Cup Series for the big boys.

from history of the 8...
"winning 20 times and capturing back-to-back NASCAR Sprint Cup championships in 1962 and 63."
when some of us think back to 1962... that is of course if you were actually alive in 1962 or maybe read about it... something other than sprint cup comes to mind.
1949 known as Strictly Stock
1950-1971 known as Grand National
1972-2003 known as Winston Cup
2004-2007 known as Nextel Cup
2008- known as Sprint Cup
other than winston cup i like the sound of Grand National.

thatsracin.com - THE LACK OF SPONSORSHIP
PARKS ARIC ALMIROLA'S #8 CAR
EGR president Steve Lauletta said they were
working hard to get the #8 back on track as
soon as they could. It's kind of sad to see
the #8 parked, since that was Jr's number
for 8 seasons while at DEI. Hope Aric gets
a sponsor soon and is back on the track.

We had a little coating of snow on the ground this morning, Dottie. It flurried off and on all day but didn't amount to anything. Temps are supposed to be in the 50s tomorrow.
Posted by: Barb G | Apr 9, 2009 12:22:58 AM
Hey guys & gals, can you believe this, we
got like 6 inches of snow here in Michigan
Monday & it snowed most of the day Tuesday.
It has warmed up and most of it has melted
as of today.
Graceann, Fox Sports had this to say.
Hunt Brothers Pizza will sponsor 6 races and
the All Star event, ensuring the #44 will
stay on the track at least until September.
Let's hope A.J. does great and maybe, they
will continue their sponsorship.
Posted by: Dottie | Apr 8, 2009 6:01:04 PM
Graceann, yeah that's good new for A.J.
I'm glad a sponsor stepped in and I hope he
gets to run the full season.

Good for AJ, Graceann. Once he figured things out he's been fairly competitive.

The COTs are terrible racecars and their safety improvements are hype - the old cars were safe and can be adjusted for the better in that regard.
They won't solve the competitive problem until they plate the cars and make the draft kick in on these tracks - as opposed to dirty air stopping passing as it's doing now.

I agree Michael. He's an asswipe, and at least now he shows it. Total jerk, but at least no longer a fake jerkoff....true colors shining brightly.

Tarheels rule!!!!
Been a great past couple days in our house what with Jeff and now the Tarheels on top.
If Lawson and Ellington return next year, Tarheels'll be a contender again.

Fan#5,
My point exactly, each driver has their own "feel". And CK and JJ obviously work great together, just like any of the Nascar great teams now or in the past. JJ has a feel that is different from the other HMS drivers. If you put any of the other HMS drivers in the 48, they are not going to be as successful as JJ has been.
Posted by: NC Expat in Hong Kong | Apr 6, 2009 9:03:18 PM
NC, Each driver has a different "feel" for their set-up, SO it wouldn't work for each of the HMS drivers...Funny story behind that tho, When JJ was hired on at HMS it was thought to beleive that JJ and "Big Daddy" had simular driving habits...Not so much...IMO Chad is the Master in that show, He learned from his Daddy...I set my cars up by feel, I like a balanced car a tad on the loose side( most would have white knuckles loose)!
Posted by: Fan #5 | Apr 6, 2009 8:53:24 PM
24 team finally back in Victory lane. I think Steve L. has got the correct support staff in place now to compete with with the 48.
Speaking of the 48 in regards to those who say he can't drive unless the car is perfect. Then why can't or don't the 24, 5, and 88 teams use the 48 setup? If the car is perfect wouldn't all of HMS use that setup? I have seen or read multiple interviews with the 24, 5, and 88 and they each say they don't like the 48 setup. I think it just proves that JJ is one of the best out there. You gotta give JJ and CK both credit, not just CK.
TS will be in victory lane soon. I must admit his team is a lot stronger a lot sooner that I expected. Good on ya TS!

I think this was the first race I didn't sit through. Watch the first 20 laps then I did several loads of laundry, took the dog for a walk, cooked a few steaks, came back for the last 40 laps, doubt I missed much. Most of the lead changes probably took place in the pits
Oh yes, JG won, but that was more his crew getting him out first. I said to my wife, who ever gets out first will win
This is no longer racing, just a traveling circus
Posted by: Don | Apr 6, 2009 5:16:44 PM
What I have found quite refreshing is the new J.Johnson persona. I think he is actually being himself. In all of his interviews this year, it's clear he cares mostly about himself, a bit of constant jerk, and doesn't seem to care about it. No fake persona, just being the kind of jerkish guy he is. I'd rather see that then listen to the fake crap he usally spills. A little more tolerable.

k39...how bout say you go away. You don't like our bitching then it's simple....DON'T READ IT!!Thanks for stopping by..........
G...I like DG as well.Pulling for these underfunded teams to be able to secure some lute to keep racing.I would like to see the 78 race more as well.Say what you will, but he truly deserves a better fate.Kid has finishes all his starts and should have had a win.Put him in that 77 and watch him go.You know I am a fan of putting a dude in a ride that has earned his dues, unlike these f1 and OW types. It's time for the Spinning Sam Hornish show to move along.Speed as well.Though a fan of AJ as he seems to be one that has adapted pretty well........

zzzzzzzzzzzz another boring thread with fans complaining about NASCAR zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz
STOP WATCHING IF IT IS SO BORING! Why waste time watching something boring, and then waste more time bitchin about it. Just go away!
BTW, the Biff was rapidly gaining on the HMS boys. It would have been a shootout if a late caution woulda come out.
Posted by: k39 | Apr 6, 2009 3:33:35 PM
I watched a little of Trackside Saturday am, and I say i was impressed with David Gilliland. I did a little net search about him yesterday, and this boy has just worked his way up and through. Noone bought him a go-kart at age 4, or built him a mod at age 14. I took a liking to him a bit....I do recall wanting to shoot him with poisoned voodoo darts at Martinsville in 2007/fall race when he was in that M and M car...but I take it back...
Sucks that they won't be going to Phoenix....really sucks....almost as bad as the fact that the #8 car is most likely folding tomorrow as well....
WHERE THE HELL IS NASCAR?!?!?!?!
Posted by: Gretchen | Apr 6, 2009 2:27:16 PM
Tony Stewart will win one soon. He is contending each week. His car seemed to go toward the end of the race Sunday. I was hoping to see he and Jeff G. ( Prolly the two best in the last 10 years ) go at it for the win. But......damnit if I could get my way about a lot of things...........................
Posted by: Gretchen | Apr 6, 2009 2:15:07 PM
Once again...glad you know me so well J2....
One more gin I gotta disagree with you on your thoughts on the COT.This car IMO takes alot of the supposed driver skill out of the driver's hand and it makes them look better than they actually are skillwise.I am not saying they are easy to drive but they will save a driver's butt by the way they are built. So in the old car your going say 190 down the backstrech and you get clipped in the rear...what happens, you spin or wreck.Now....that happens, you go slidways a bit and manage to bring it back straight. How many times since the COT have we seen guys sideways and make these "miraculous" saves?A bunch. You didn't see it before unless your name was Earnhardt or Richmond.TS,RG,GB were pretty good at saving 'em as well. But today,it happens all the time. You still have guys that have the raw talent to save a car like the 99,18 and 14 for example, but you got guys that are only as good as the CC and equipment.Yep,they have talent...but to say the COT is a measure of driver talent is off compared to the other cars of yesterday.
So WTF happened with the 48 yesterday if CK is limited to what he can do to that car?All of a sudden JJ figured out how to drive without any help?Driver talent kicked in the final 80 laps I suppose.....right.
Hell, maybe the COT is harder to "drive" than the old car.But you can't tell me that it hasn't made these drivers look better in saving a car. They get sideways and bounce around more true, but I can't see that these guys making the same saves in the old car....And the racing still sucks.Alot of it sucked before too!Thing is,all we need is a good race or drama laiden finish to keep us interested in the product......

28 lead changes in a 500 mi race...I don't want to sound like Mike Daly but thats pathetic...outside of the chatter I read on posts, sounds like I ain't missin' anything at all!
Posted by: Fan #5 | Apr 6, 2009 12:40:35 PM
DJ,
Please....there's not a hateful bone in your body, DJ. Go Tarheels.
The COT brings more equality in racing to the track than the previous one. This car relies more on driver talent than the other one. CK could manipulate the other'n out the whatever. However, isn't happening on this one. NASCAR's got their hands wrapped around this baby and what ya can and cannot do to it. 100,000 fines as well as race suspensions have nixed the creative talents of the likes of the Knaus' and Everhams when it comes to massaging the cars. Now it's mostly driver talent.
Edwards and Kyle B weren't dominant drivers in the old cars, but this new one, we're seeing their talent shine through. JJ was a talent to be reckoned with in the old car, and this talent makes him a potent force in this new one. Strong possibility of a fourpeat for JJ or the HMS org.
I know my fav is Big Daddy, but I'll have to admit JJ the driver is the best out there.
If you'll read my prior posts I seldom have negative things to say about races, even when my favorite org, HMS, doesn't prevail.
Posted by: Jon2 | Apr 6, 2009 11:25:49 AM
Man I hate you are a TarHeel fan J2!
28 lead changes huh?Yeah, and it all happened during actual racing right? If your HMS crowd wouldn't have done well, you'd be right there with the majority that think that race sucked ass.Once again,JJ relying on his CC to get him a good finish.Yep,great team...the boy would be mid pack based on his skill as a driver but the wisedom of CK gets him the finishes.Good driver and the best CC.Yippee....
Yeah,Tony gives HMS all the credit right?LOL!!Give me a break..........
Jr needs to go back to drinking BUDWISER instead of Merlot/Cheese............
Posted by: DJ | Apr 6, 2009 10:58:09 AM
I read something like 28 lead changes. Appeared to me lotta racing going on. RFR drivers hadn't messed up on pit stops, woulda been a livelier finish. Of course, JJ takes a piece of crap and by the end is contending for the win. Awesome driver, awesome team. Jeff was lucky laps ran out or JJ just probably woulda won it. Tony S looked stout in that HMS equipment. Only a matter of time before he gets his first win as an owner/driver.
Someone please buy Junior some glasses.
Kyle B shows his immaturity by ramming a race non-factor, John Andretti, which in turn puts himself a lap down and out of contention. Stupid move.
Posted by: Jon2 | Apr 6, 2009 10:34:44 AM
OK Nascar...the COT doesn't provide better racing.Just do like the IROC,as I thought this COT idea would be like the IROC.Hell, the racing was better at least with IROC at any of the tracks.Hell again....the cars can't even get close enough other than Dega and Tona for there to be anything more than single car incidents for us that like at least a few crashes! Each week for the most part we talk about how boring it is.We get the occasional decent racing but it only occurs 2-3 laps after cautions or the last few laps or so.Empty seats, lower TV ratings, more ZZZZZZZing, and not enough beer is not ggod Nascar. What is your next move???
Good for the 24.Now the media can find another story line.Man,get Danika over here and let her and Kyle get their pannies/thongs in a wad!Only thing note-worthy other than the 24,was how the 18 let his temper cost him any thoughts of contention.Slamming the 34 for racing...how dare he!
Go Heels!

diane
is jr still the 5-6th best driver at hms LOL
diane think if MM didnt have such a bad start think of where he'd be in the standing the guy is having a good year
k2
they might need a front tire changer on the 99 team i felt for the guy and tp drop your driver 12 places at that time in the race :(
biff said it best, bad luck ok i'll buy that but mistakes and bad and you a serious problem
Posted by: aggie | Apr 6, 2009 10:07:44 AM
congrats to the 24 nice to see the drama ends
the jr mess just gets worse and the 48 is a coming like a freight train
like i said last week the 48 team is not going to lay around and its unreal once agaion what ck did to that car 2-3 more laps and he would have eatn that 24 with ease
Posted by: aggie | Apr 6, 2009 10:02:57 AM
Oh yeah, on the boring subjecct, next week is gonna be boring! NO RACE!!!
Posted by: John | Apr 6, 2009 6:54:31 AM
Finally Jeff and the 24 get a win. Been a long time comin. To all you 24 haters, Tough Shit!!!
The best thing to happen besides Jeff winning was Mark Martin had another good run.
If you guys think Nascar is boring, LEAVE!, or go watch F! if you want to see a snoozer each week!
Tony Stewart had a good run again, and them damn turdyotas were nowhere in sight!!!

Congrats to Jeff G. & the whole 24 team on
their first Texas win.
Congrats to J.J., G.B. T.S. & M.K. for
ending up in the top five.
Good to see Jeff G. win since he hasn't won
since Oct. 2007. I'm sure Steve L. was a
happy c.c. when J.G. won.
Barb
I don't like crashes but I do like to see
some actual racing.
Yeah, I'd like to see some good actual
racing to Barb but I don't like crashes
either. So you don't like that stupid Digger
either.lol I hate that stupid thing popping
up all over the place and now they're even
selling Digger products.
Damn, I was hoping the #14 would win today
but he had a good run and come in 4th.
I agree with Kathy this was a boring race
but at least we had a race to watch.
Posted by: Dottie | Apr 6, 2009 12:50:25 AM
It was a rather uneventful race wasn't it? As big a fan of a crash as the next guy but as Barb said it would be nice to see some actual racing.

ironman
everyone gets spread out, 15 cars on the lead lap......zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz...
that says it all
even the jr and kyb bs was zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz
Posted by: aggie | Apr 5, 2009 11:31:39 PM
I don't like crashes but I do like to see some actual racing. There's no racing anymore other than some mid-pack skirmishes that translate into nothing because the guy out front is in his own zip code. The boobs in the booth insult my intelligence with their rah-rah faux excitement and that stupid Digger critter. Give. Me. A. Break.
The other half was tickled purple because his driver won. Too bad that sweet little angel, Ella, stayed home this weekend. She steals the show from Big Daddy.
Posted by: Barb G | Apr 5, 2009 11:29:13 PM
I have to agree with Ironman, I dvr all the races because I work on sunday, but I am going to have to seriously re consider that if the races stay like this. I find myself fastforwarding through the races every time because all their doing is going around in circles following each other. Can anyone even tell me the last race that was exciting from start to finish with some crashes? I honestly cant think of any races recently, where there was more then like two cautions that involved wrecks due to driver error.
The COT cars are safe...but BORING and I know I am not a true fan supposedly because I like the crashes, but I am sorry that I want to see some fireworks in these races.
Posted by: Jason | Apr 5, 2009 10:36:00 PM
Big Daddy finally stops the drought and all that with a first win at Texas.
Surprised Big Rick as well as Jeff's Wife wasn't there to celebrate. BR's gonna have to scale back all that hobnobbing he's been doing of late with the former Gov.
Posted by: Jon2 | Apr 5, 2009 9:18:33 PM
Today was waaaaaay too typical of what Nascar has become. Leader gets way out in front, everyone gets spread out, 15 cars on the lead lap......zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz.....I'm tired of it. I might have to start watching just the plate races to have some goddamn excitement. At least we see side-by-side action at Talladega, and, for the most part, at Daytona. Right now Nascar sucks ass.
