Shane update (big news)
I don't know if anyone knows this or not so I'm gonna share some news that I received today. Nascar has said that they are suspending Shane Hmiel's spotter. They received a tape that had communication between Shane and his spotter from two weeks ago during a practice. Nascar claims that during the conversation the spotter told Shane, "just keep your nose on the white line". Just wanted to keep everyone in the loop about the latest and greatest. Dam that's cruel, but funny. Hope everyone enjoys a little humor.

Gee.
I wonder if that's over the line?

Ouch. All right, I love a joke as much as the next person, and I certainly tell my share of "Dallas Coke-boy" jokes. But please remember the seriousness of this situation. Not just the money and the jobs on the team involved (including perhaps one or two tire guys...) - but watching someone you care about kick a drug problem isn't a laughing matter.
Although you can tell the "Lance Armstrong busted by the French for suspicious substance (soap)" joke over and over, if you like.

WOW

Sara, i dont feel sorry for people who have drug problems. No one forces you took take drugs, you choose to. He not only had everything in the world going for him, he messed up TWICE. No simpathy from me. The Lance joke is pretty good though.

That was not only lame and stupid but it was also in bad taste.

Actually it was pretty funny Trent. :)

no matter the situation there is always a way to find some humor in it...i've been suspicious of the win fuel ever since it appeared on the scene...no sympathy here for shame...when he took on dj he was messing with a driver who has paid his dues the good old fashioned way...so where you with newman when he took out i think his name was bill baird in the pocono arca race on the last lap...i think the youngsters in nascar call that bump drafting now?????

I thought the joke was great and i was one of the few taking up for the guy in the previous post on this issue.
Sara you could easily replace busted by the French to busted by the T authorities (Boston's Rail System) and it would still be funny. I mean, come on, so they built the Maginot wall and thought they could keep Hitler out without thinking that he could go around it, honest mistake right.

Was a bad joke by the spotter, but funny for those who are clean in retrospect.
Sara, people who use drugs should get treatment, yes. But they got themselves in the predicament. And we as a society shouldn't have to pay for nor put up with their stupid choices.
Personally, I chalk it up to Natural Selection.
And also, not everyone who takes drugs abuses them (not that I condone it). I suspect Shane is more of a spoiled idiot rather than an addict in need of treatment.

That was a good one Trent! Some people need to let loose a bit and learn to take a joke for what it is, a joke!
Posted by: Marty | Jun 10, 2005 5:20:41 AM
It's a joke people, not meant to be taken seriously............goddamn.
Posted by: Shane | Jun 10, 2005 8:48:15 AM
so if I tell a racist "joke" , I can said it's a joke people, not to be taken seriously.
Personally I didn't find the joke funny, but even if I did, it's still as the poster said above in bad taste, no matter what context you present it in.

I thought the joke was very funny! As for feeling sorry for drug addicts I can't. I have a few in my family and I don't feel sorry for them no matter how hard they want me to. The people to feel sorry for are their families and children who have to put up with the crap that they put them through.

Bad taste? Are we in the 1950's.
Posted by: Jeff | Jun 10, 2005 9:18:30 AM
Unless you have ever used drugs, you have no idea. It's not as simple as "you choose to", it's a chemical issue that affects a percentage of the population. Those people can not say NO if their life depended on it.That's why it's called addiction. Still pretty funny though, a joke will make no difference one way or the other to anyone involved.
Way to big a deal made about flippin off Jarrett,so what he gave him the bird, big f'in deal. That's Racin

I thought he was a weed monkey, It's coke they keep busting him for?
Posted by: ron | Jun 10, 2005 10:01:55 AM
Becasue he tested postivie for a BANNED substance... does not mean he ABUSED it or that it is ILLEGAL... There is NO PLACE on the track for any tolerance of drugs... BUT don't make it out to be that he is an ADDICT or that it was ILLEGAL without knowing the facts... reguarldess of whether he returns to the track... those alligations alone can destroy a person. A perfect example of this is what happened with Tim Richmond.

You know what they say, "Things go better with Coke!"..........LOL!!
Posted by: Driver8 | Jun 10, 2005 11:05:33 AM
Sure thing there M Benson. I suppose that is why he had to go through a Substance Abuse program the last time.
Meaning of Substance Abuse: The overindulgence in and dependence on an ADDICTIVE substance, especially alcohol or a narcotic drug.
Posted by: Briguy | Jun 10, 2005 11:15:48 AM
Look man... I can see you are one to judge on someones PAST... although it is called NASCARS Substance Abuse Policy... that is a title... he very well could have been positive for something illegal... BUT it could aslo be something like an OTC decongestant... hell it could be ephedra... both OTC and on NASCARS banned substances list. I stated before there should be ZERO tolerence... but GD ... don't make it out to be more than it is without the facts. I'm sure those will follow. I tend to lean more toward the abuse theory also from listening to JR's interview...

That's funny right there, I don't care who you are!
How 'bout the name if his replacement driver? Blunt. Sometimes the jokes just write themselves.
Posted by: Eddie Suarez | Jun 10, 2005 11:38:28 AM
You can talk about addiction all you want, but the fact is he started doing it and continued doing it on his own free will. Shane had his second chance to straighten out his act and he CHOSE the path he took. He should not be allowed to put other drivers (and over the wall pit crews) lives in danger. Would you all blame his "addiction" if he were to hurt (or worse) someone else on the track or would you finally place the blame where it belongs... with Shane!!
By the way Trent, loved the joke. :-)

I agree with Allison. Shane is probably more of a spoiled brat than an addict. He sure comes across like it anyway.
As far as ezrider714 goes, give me a break! It is a choice. You either CHOOSE to do a drug the first time or your don't. Everyone knows drugs are addicting so you would be an idiot to choose to start.
I am glad that NASCAR has suspended Shane indefinitely. He deserves nothing less. This sport is different than any other. If a football player takes steroids he is hurting himself. If a NASCAR driver is taking drugs he takes the chance of not only hurting himself but of hurting or possiblity killing any of the other drivers on the track. When drivers run into each other it's with 3,500 pound car not just their body.
Shane Hmiel is an idiot. He deserves to never be in a race car again. Yes, he has talent, but he was already given a chance and does not deserve another. All he would probably do is embarce himself, his family and whatever team was willing to take on again!

Here is something to ponder...
Baseball has only come down and busted it's minor players for steroids. No big names yet. Nascar catches Shane, which isn't one of the big names of Nascar.
What if one of those guys in the Top 10, Dale Jr, Gordon, Jimmie, Stewart - are tested positive? Would the penalty be the same?
Posted by: Eddie Suarez | Jun 10, 2005 12:08:43 PM
Eddie it had better be.
