Montoya and Patrick
By Trent Cherry
Ill start by saying this weekend was one of the worst I've experienced at the track. We were bad and couldn't get anything going all day. Frustration is setting in and it's getting harder and harder to try and keep everyone up. It s like the old saying goes, when it rains it pours, and its pouring now.
OK, enough about our bad year, i want to talk about the whole Montoya and Patrick thing. I'm not a big race fan outside of Nascar, but I do know this. Nascar has done a great job in keeping a fan base and expanding the sport into one of the biggest spectator sports in the world. Whether you like or dislike what Nascar has done in the past years, they keep fans coming back and people in the seats. Here's where Ive got a problem. All the media keeps writing about is how these two drivers (Montoya and Patrick) could help the image of Nascar. Whats wrong with the image of Nascar now. Anyone who wants to try and make a race can come with a car and make a qualifying lap and see where they stand. People thing because this sport is dominated by white males that it needs a face lift. It is what it is, and if others want to try and make it in the sport I'm all for that. But don't tell me that Nascar needs Montoya and Patrick to help rejuvenate the image. I think what Bill Lester is doing is great for the sport. He is putting in his time and learning to be a driver. Its not going to be handed to him so that Nascar can have an African American in the sport. If he makes it its because he's one of the best 43 drivers in the world. Same with Montoya and Patrick. OK, thats it for now.

Trent, seems to me Brian France thinks that everyone still considers NASCAR to be a "redneck sport," and I'm sure some still do. But his obsession to have everyone in the world a NASCAR fan seems to be a little overwhelming. Brian should be calling Montoya and offering him a signing bonus. NASCAR got free press for their Diversity Program without even trying. We'll soon see if Montoya brings in the fan base that Brian so desires.
To this long-time NASCAR fan there is nothing wrong with its "image." High profile drivers, such as Ryan, are well educated, very intelligent and excellent role models for anyone to look up to. How many other sports can say that about every "player" associated with that sport? (Okay, there were a few exceptions.)
And I agree. If you can make the race, you run the race, no matter who you are. (I just hope that doesn't include Danica - she needs to stay where she is.)
I'm predicting the 12 is on the pole this weekend! You sure deserve that and more. Good luck!

Go away Danica Patrick. You are over-hyped and over-rated. You can't manage a top 5 finish in a series that only start 19 cars. The only reason why you get your press is because you are a POA. At least Erin Crocker won a WoO feature against men. What have you done? Nothing.

Hang in there Trent, you guys are a strong team with a talented driver. The pole sounds good to me for this weekend!!
And I agree with you...I see nothing wrong with the image that NASCAR has now, except that they're getting more and more $$ hungry. I hope to heaven they can keep Danica out, NASCAR doesn't need that kind of press...no matter what Brainless France thinks. I wish people would just go back to concentrating on racing and not on being PC, and making EVERYONE happy every minute of the day.

Crocker has done nothing but give a lil sumthin sumthin to Evernham. She sucks on the track and she literally sucks off the track. i dont mind a woman being in the sport if she earns her way in like most other male drivers have to. but this whole thing of sleeping your way to the top or using looks to get a ride it growing tiresome. Danica needs to stay in IRL, thats her speed, they dont care about racing over there anyways and not caring about racing is what patrick does best.

Hey Trent,
Welcome back & AMEN, to your comments.
Your contribution is what got me here in the first place.
I'm sure it's not easy when things get off track. Will spare you the lecture and just wish you well and hang in.
Whatever happened to "dance with the one that brung ya"? I feel that we(fans) help create the monster, so now I've learned not to feed it so much.

I think yo'all are missing the point. Wins...I mean NEXTEL CUP is now coast to coast, in Japan, Busch is in Mexico, talks are in the works for a Canada race, but for the most part it still the good old southern boys driving.
For NEXTEL to get the talent of Montoya or Patrick would be nothing but beneficial to the sport, and perhaps get rid of some of the eggheads out there now.

I'm as big a Cup fan as anyone, but in no way are Cup drivers collectively the "best 43 drivers in the world."

Come on... Erin Crocker got a ride based on her looks? Have you actually LOOKED at Erin Crocker? She looks halfway decent in the pictures in which she's had professional hair and makeup, but in "race trim", she's plain at best.
That's like saying Greg Biffle got his ride based on his looks.
I'm looking for Danica to be the third Michael Waltrip Racing driver...

Maybe Ray likes the teenage boy look?
Posted by: TJ | Jul 14, 2006 11:28:48 AM
No! No! No!!!!!
It would be bad enough to have Danica in NASCAR, but to put her with Mikey. UGH! There's only so much a Michael Waltrip fan can take! Toyota's going to get enough press next year anyway.
And why is everyone still talking about Danica moving? I thought she decided she didn't like the 36 race schedule. Can everyone please accept that and hopefully everyone will forget about her. . .except for every other commercial, magazine cover and the mention of her name every lap during an IRL race. . .
BUT NO! NOT MWR!

BTW Trent, good luck this weekend. Hopefully you'll be sitting on the pole in a few hours!

No one bitches when Junior is on every magazine cover, t.v. show, or commercial. Danica Patrick is making herself money, she also has sponors to please. How could having her in the sport hurt? Ward Burton has never done anything either(I guess he did luck into a Daytona 500 win) but people always want him to drive again. My point is, why not get some new blood in the sport instead of recycling has beens and never was'.

As of having a girl in NASCAR I think it'll be okay to have one or two, but if NASCAR ever becomes a 'female' sport, I'm gonna start following waterpolo!
Posted by: Jen S | Jul 14, 2006 1:12:16 PM
Because JR and Ward actually know how to drive a stock car and grew up WANTING to be Nascar drivers one day. I have no problem with someone making money but the beeatch needs to decide what she wants to do. All week people have been talking about her coming over to nascar, some comments were positive some were negative and after all the wasted time discussing it we then find out she was just "testing that waters". The woman is going where the paycheck is and this was all a stunt to get the bigger paycheck. Now that the big money will be coming from an IRL team maybe she will shut up now and stop being so much of a media whore.
The only new blood this sport needs are people that grew up WANTING to make it to Nascar someday. I need to see new blood that wants to RACE, not new blood that is using this sport to negotiate a contract. We need people to pull for that are concerned with scoring points not dollar signs. She has made it clear her heart is with the IRL, I say fine, go do that and shut the hell up.

I agree TJ, Patrick was working an angle here. And what gets me is she's the bigger story of the week. Montoya who has actually had success racing, won races in F1, is well known because he can actually drive is getting less attention and he REALLY IS COMING TO NASCAR.

Powder Puff Racing, little pink cars, it's perfect for MW.

CONGRATULATIONS Trent! You've got the pole! I knew you could do it. Good luck during the race!

I guess Ward Burton also lucked into 2 wins at Darlington too.

Way to go Alltel Team!!!! Lot's of luck to yall Sunday! Proud of yall!
I believe Danica's Dad wants her in Nascar, not so much her and she's already said, she's not coming...??
As far as different types of drivers coming in, again, as some have said, If you can qualify it, then run it..... Erin Crocker can qualify and she has ran up top, she might surprise ya someday....... She got there cause Kasey Kahne said she could drive! Give it a rest!
The one thing I don't care for is that Nascar wants this NEW IMAGE so bad that they just give seats away..... Some/MOST the drivers grew up driving, working on their own cars, doing whatever it took to get to the race.... Parents mortgaged their homes, land, whatever they could, over and over, just to give their kids a CHANCE, just a chance to live out their dreams! So I do get a little irritated that these new folks just get cars/chances handed to them on silver platters, just so they can create a new breed of racers..... LET THEM EARN THEIR WAY IN.....

Everybody knows that Erin Crocker has her ride only because she and Ray are together...BTW she did not win a feature, she won a qualifing race. Not to say that she isn't talanted but maybe she needs to stay in ARCA. As far as Danica goes if she can be competitive then good for her. Juan Pablo is an incredibly talented driver and I do think that it says alot that he would leave F1 for NASCAR....
p.s. good job 12 team on the pole!

I think that is the smartest post you have ever had. I agree with that 100%. Nascar just needs good race car drivers whether their brown black, blue, purple, male or feamale

Don't forget Gordon and Johnson
Posted by: TJ | Jul 17, 2006 8:19:38 AM
I am so sick of Tony Stewart thinking he owns Nascar. I'm glad Newman took him out and had the balls not to back down. If mreo people would stand up to Stewart, Johnson, and Gordon, we may not hear their whiny asses as much each week.
Posted by: 12jay19 | Jul 17, 2006 9:53:02 AM
I guess Newman "testing" those waters by talking to RR before resigning with PRS is different than what Danica is doing. Newman came from open wheel, Tony did, he drove IRL also. So why take digs at Montoya or Patrick for wanting to try another form of racing.
BTW who is Newman blaming for his bad performance now that Rusty Wallace is gone?
