Welcome Back Benny
By Dennis Terry
Daytona is history for the 2006 schedule.
It was absolutely crazy winning at Daytona with Dale Jr.
I’ve said it before; the Champagne tastes just a sweet after a Busch win as it does after a Cup win. In Daytona however, the Champagne tastes a lot like Budweiser!
Jr.’s car was so good that we only made one pit stop. The pit crew’s contribution wasn’t much, but from what I saw of pit stops on Friday night our 13.90 second stop was the class of the field.
Our crew wasn’t as strong in the pits for Saturday night's Cup race… “Small changes have huge outcomes”!
A late race “bump” with Greg Biffle in the pits ended with us pitting the car outside of the box. It was a costly mistake that resulted in a one lap penalty and caused our driver to play catch up for the rest of the night.
Early in the race, crew chief Kevin Manion made a great call by taking fuel only. The strategic move put Truex out front earning 5 bonus points and a solid position in the lead pack which is critical at Daytona.
It’s off to Chicago this weekend where we’ll once again be pitting for Jr. in the Busch race and Truex in the Cup race.
Chicago marks the midseason switch to TNT/NBC broadcasting with my favorite group of announcers. No more Boogity, Boogity yelling or Larry Mac discussing strategy and race engineering that was obsolete in the late ‘80’s.
Sure, Benny will probably get Kurt & Kyle and Casey & Kasey mixed up and he’ll mispronounce Kvapil, but he won’t be talking about “Mikey” every other lap and he won’t be making stuff up just so that he can talk (Hammond).
Besides, you have to admit that Benny is the type of guy that would make a good addition to your family.
Everyone needs an Uncle Benny or Cousin Benny to liven up Christmas and birthdays and for the next 19 weekends you can count on "Uncle Benny" to liven up our races and that will be a welcome change

Benny might be ok in the booth but get rid of Weber and bring back Bestwick. Weber is not good at auto racing and needs to go.

Looking forward to having NBC back in the booth, too. Only wish Weber was history too.
Great Job at Daletona. Glad you guys got one win. Sorry someone took away a chance a Cup win. Did Dale Jr.'s car ever make it to Victory Lane?
Good Luck at Chicagoland with Junior and Martin!

mary4jrs8-
YEP. The guys pulled the axel out under NASCAR's supervision and pushed the car to victory lane about 10 mins late.

Gosh, Dennis, tell us how you really feel about Fox...lol...I'm looking forward to the change, although I think Wally does better commentary than BP!
Congrats on the Busch win last weekend!

When Jr said he was trying to run through the gearbox while doing burnouts I knew it was going to be tough to get that car to Victory Lane. Congrats on the win. I feel bad for Mike Joy. Great play-by-play guy having to announce with boobs.
Now we get to listen to Benny scream that a car is blowing up when they have a tire rub.
I so wish MRN was on the same commercial schedule with TV.

The good thing about NBC, they don't constantly worship Jimmie Johnson like the Fox crew
Posted by: 12jay19 | Jul 6, 2006 1:35:43 PM
DW is such a dumb ass old fool. I have gotten where I hit the mute button at the start of every green flag so I don't have to that idiot's Boogity BS!!!
Posted by: LJ | Jul 6, 2006 1:38:57 PM
I am glad to know that I am not the only one who cannot stand DW, or his little quote at the drop of the green. All of my family perfers FOX, and I don't think I could be happier that NBC has its turn now!!!

Man is it refreshing to hear an insider talk about being sick of Mikey.
Posted by: Mark | Jul 6, 2006 2:16:08 PM
Sorry you guys got screwed on pit road...the car looked good! i'm not going to miss Fox and the "we're so cool' ego fest from the Tower of Babble! At least NBC gives us a FULL field rundown, and will come back from commercial to show what happens instead of showing so much of the 'race' in their recaps...during green flag racing, no less!

Barney Hall, Joe Moore, Mike Bagley, Dan Hubbard, Dave Moody, Jeff Striegle, Adam Alexander, Danielle Frye, Winston Kelley, Steve Post.
These are the ONLY guys that do it right and know what they are talking about.

DT,
Congrats on the win, and your dissection of the Fox crew is spot on.
The fox announce crew is more concerned with putting themselves over as stars than they are about their product.

You sure hit it on the head with your comments on the Fox crew. I loved the reference to Larry Mc with his "up to the minute" 1980's anaylsis of anything mechanical. And... was Boogity, etc ever funny? Duh, no!
The rest of the NASCAR season will be fun
to watch. So long till next year, Barney Hall.

Joe Moore and Barney Hall are hands down the best announcer two-some out there. The way the whole MRN crew flawlessly does a race on the radio is great. They should fire all the talking heads from Fox and NBC and bring in that crew and let them go nuts. It would be so much better.

Barney Hall is terrible , I have no idea why anyone likes him , he needs to retire and needed to 20 years ago . Danielle Frye is even worse , she can't speak a full sentence without studdering or saying "uhhhh", I'm convinced anyone can do a better job then her .
As far as DW goes , he's great except for the Boogity shit and talking about Mikey all the time . He has more knowledge then anyone I've heard .

DT,
Does it bother you that your Busch driver and reporters were calling you guys the geritol gang?
Posted by: 24/48fan | Jul 6, 2006 3:45:21 PM
24/48fan-
Nope, that doesn't bother me... that's why there are handicap ramps in victory lane! Maybe we can even get Geritol to step up with some sponsorship support.

i'm not really a fan of either network doing the races but if i had to choose i would take FOX. Comparing each of the 3 in the networks, Mike Joy is so much better than Bill Weber. He does a really good job of calling the race and deferring to the other two for advice as to what is going on during the race. Comparing the drivers in the booth, I think DW is slightly better than Wally Dallenbach. I say that mainly because Wally has never won anything and doesn't have the credibility as DW does with his 3 championships. Wally does a good job of remaining calm and giving insight, but DW just seems to know more about the drivers, the cars, the technology and today's form of racing than Wally does. The boogity crap def. brings him down some but i do like DW's knowledge. Larry Mac and Benny are a dead heat. I love Larry Mac's humor and knowledge, he really knows the cars and the technology, being out of the pit box for only 5 yrs. Benny really brings a down-home feel to the race and can really relate to the common fan. The one thing I do look forward to with NBC is the disapperance of that moron Dick Bergerren for the rest of the year.

IMHO, the best NASCAR commentary this year was Phil Parsons, Hermie Sadler, and Hank Parker Jr. at the 2nd Nashville race. They focused on the cars, drivers, strategy, track conditions, pit road --- in other words, the racing! They left their egos at home, a skill far-too-rare in the Fox "Tower of Babble". (Thanks for the great phrase, Sal.)
It's been interestng to listen to Rusty's commentary at IRL races. He's been quite straightforward, perhaps helped because he has never raced in that series. I hope he and the rest of the ESPN team bring that same focus next year.
Had the #16 and Martin been in opposite positions in that pit road incident, Fox would have droned on about it being Bono's responsibility to make sure the way was clear before telling Martin to "go, go, go." Strange. I don't remember them noting that the fault here was clearly the #16's. Even on INC, Despain implied that Martin was in error. [Snarl] One of these days, you'll finally see that respect you've all been working so hard to earn.
Thanks for all the time and effort. Walt's going to have had a hard time picking his "best of" for last weekend. Here's to an even better weekend in Chicago for both your teams.

I'm glad NBC is broadcasting the rest of the year glad I don't have to hear DW's stupidness and his sucking up to drivers mostly the hendrick boys and yakking about his brother. Benny he may be silly at times in the booth but he's cool.

You guys should be the class of the field, your a cup pit crew working a Busch race.I bet that the Carolina Panthers could look like the class of the field against the local pop warner team too. I know that other teams also do it, but does that make it right.
I am with you on the network change.Hello Nascar coverage for pre-schoolers, goodbye coverage for idiots.
Posted by: hostage94 | Jul 6, 2006 6:27:47 PM
I agree with hostage. A cup driver and a cup pit crew should win a Busch race. Yoy guys shouldn't be allowed to be in a "feeder" system. You don't see the New England Patriots taking on a NFL Europe team, why don't you just go beat up someone in a comma.

Congrats on the Win!!! Job well done!!!
I agree with the Mike Joy, I really like him and like the way he does..... I like the Truck guys, when Mickey is NOT up there in the booth.... I really liked Alan in the booth, also like Wally..... AND I'll have to say, I thought Benson did a pretty good job when he was in the booth the other day!
But there's things and people I don't like from both FOX and TNT/NBC.... It's funny, cause at the first of the season, we can't wait for TNT/NBC to take over, by the end of the season, we're wishing FOX was back! smile.... seems we're never happy!!!!
Posted by: darlene | Jul 6, 2006 8:34:39 PM
I don't care who covers the race, what I want to see is the race. That means coming back from commercials BEFORE the green flag drops, cutting from commercials for major action on the track, and some coverage other than the top ten.
Posted by: Jeff | Jul 6, 2006 10:02:54 PM
Hostage, you seem to forget that this time last year Denny's team WAS a full time Busch series team...they followed Martin up to Cup...
And Joe, how can you beat someone up who is in a "comma?" That's punctuation, dude.
