Watkins Glen and 'Talladega Nights'
By Trent Cherry
Lets talk about then Glen first, then Ill get into the worst movie of the year. Both the 2 and 12 had pretty good cars this weekend. Actually we had a very good cars. Everyone knows what happened to the 2 car but I'm sure there are some questions as to what happened with us. On the last lap Ryan got hit from behind by Boris Said. During his spinning he went thru the bus stop and kept digging. Nascar has a rule that you cant advance any spots and have to come to a complete stop if you miss the bus stop. The rule is completely different if you are involved in a wreck thru the bus stop. So any ways, after the race our scorer comes down and says that we finished 32. Of course known of us knew what was going on. So after a long meeting in the hauler with officials, Matt came back and told us we finished 8th. What happened was, Boris Said spun us and kept on going thru the bus stop and never stopped. Nascar ended up penalizing him instead of us, giving the 12 car the 8th spot and putting Boris back in the field. All and all it wasn't a good day for Penske, I thought we had a winning car in the 2 and a top 5 in the 12. What happened to the 2 car was just a bad deal. I don't know what else to say about that.
Now, onto the worst movie of the year. Talladega nights was horrible. I love dumb stupid movies and ones that make you laugh the whole way thru, but this movies was terrible. I ve heard mixed opinions on it but I felt like I should have gotten a refund. Will Ferrell is very funny in all his movies, but even he couldn't save this terrible script. Do not go see this movie. OK, its off to Michigan.

I was glad to see NASCAR give Newman back his position. I don't mind these road ringers coming in and racing hard but he just took out Newman. And then he blamed Newman, said he was blocking because he ran out of gas. First, Boris Said needs to get his facts straight, Newman didn't run out of gas, he was nursing a sour transmission. he had every right to block, he was well above the minimum speed requirement.
Anyway, I haven't seen Dega nights yet. But I'm sure curiosity will get the best of me.

Trent, I guess you didn't go see the movie w/ your Dennis. Or have the two of you always disagreed on rating a movie?
But thank you! I was planning on waiting until the DVD, and now I will. (Dennis almost had me talked into ck'g it out this weekend.)
Sorry about your weekend, but glad you got the last lap "incident" straightened out. A top 10 is not bad at all.
I love the new Alltel commercial where the car turns into a phone. Don't think Ryan had to rehearse too much for that one, but it turned out great. Might have to make a visit to my "nearest Alltel dealer."
Good luck at MIS. I'm looking for another pole!

12 Jay,
I think you got it wrong. The engine mounts broke.
"The motor was just sitting there flopping around, and the throttle was hanging on me wide open," "I was using the kill switch to shut it off. That's why I dropped back those last two laps. It was hanging really bad. I had my hands full. Boris got into the back of me. I don't know what I did or what he did. It doesn't matter. I was using up a lot of the race track, and he turned me around. We kept going and finished the race."
I feel bad for Boris, he deserved a better finish than that.

Yeah, Michael I read that after I posted the comment. And I said that Boris needs to get his facts straight. I feel like a dork.

Trent I agree...HOW did Nascar ever approve such a train wreck?

I hope I never see "Talladega Nights." As one who has followed NASCAR for about 30 years, I get tremendously irritated at ANY movie that reinforces the stereotypes, even movies like "Days of Thunder," which tried to treat racers and racing with some respect, but which failed miserably.
While I haven't seen either in a long time, weren't the last two good racing movies "Grand Prix" (c. 1966) and "LeMans?"

That points thing was sure confusing there at the end..... We were top ten, then next thing we were in the 30's and finally back in the top ten.... I'm glad it turned out as good as it did.... Listening to Ryan, I was really thinking we weren't going to make it to the end!!!
Trent, the spotter that was there, other than Greg, he was really upbeat and keeping things light...... was good to hear for a change!

One of the spotters sounded like ted kennedy

The movie was just terrible...we took our grandson and I was so ashamed of what they put on the screen...was ashamed of being a fan...but realized NASCAR did not make the movie...it stunketh.

i think everyone needs to lighten up on the movie. i am a 30 year diehard fan, but you need to step back and look at things from a different prospective. it was not a movie about nascar, it was a comedy based loosely on nascar, get a life

Drew, IM all about making fun of racing and comedy, but that movie was terrible. It ranks up there as not even entertaining to watch.

Since I wanted to slit my throat while suffering miserably through both Ferrell's Elf and Anchorman, I'll pass on Talladega Nights.

Shirley...I warned you...it DID stinketh

Drew-
The movie just wasn't funny, and I don't say that because it offended me in any way. I took no offense to any of the knocks on race fans or drivers....it just wasn't funny. As for the story/plot....for some reason I'm thinking the storyboards were drawn up by a 4 year old with his Crayolas. It was just a lousy movie even if one does "lighten up" and "look at things from a different perspective."

Did IT have a plot?

Hey Trent,
The clips of the movie provided me with more info than I wanted.
Glad the 12 car got a good finish. The deal with the 2 was most unfortunate. Still, great to see both cars running well. Michigan will be a good test to see how things are "really" going. Like what I've seen this year between the teammates. Meaning, nota'problem. cool
Keep diggin'. I know that this has not been as much fun for you while running poorly. We need to hear the news, good or not. Thanks for your work, on & off the track.

I have not watched the movie. However I was one of those fans in OHio in which the race was not televised. I was fumin hot. Instead we got an Indians game in which they were winnin 11-0 in the 1st inning. Boooo. That has never happened before and i hope it never happens again. So the only thing I saw was the last 20 laps.
I am excited for MIS and hope for another good Alltel finish....CUZ I WILL BE THERE!! I am ready to get back to the track and watch some racin. Hope to see ya there...I will be there in all of my newman fan glory.

I have no intention of seeing Talladega nights. A friend of mine refuses to go see it because he thinks it will put down Southerners and race fans, and I'm inclined to agree. But what else do we expect from Hollywood?

NASCAR had a huge opportunity to hook itself to the coattails of "Cars". What a great movie. Instead, Dega Nights and a hack "actor" is where they chose to go. Wonderful. Let it hit the $5 DVD bin at Wal-Mart & then I might consider buying a copy.

PettyCash-
Your $5 would be better spent paying a bum to kick you in the junk.

Hey I could USE 5 bucks!

Anchorman was hilarious. What are you talking about?
Posted by: Jeff | Aug 20, 2006 1:58:55 PM
LOL! The comments about 'Talledega Nights' just prove what an anal bunch the NASCAR fans are. Rednecks always hate being put down, even by Jeff and the Blue Collar Comedy bunch. What is odd is that rednecks are always first to put down anything that picques their xenophobic antennae. Hypocrisy reigns in the South! LOL!
Trent, let's face it, Penske has accepted mediocrity in his NASCAR operation this year as the racing budget is tight and the big effort was to win Indy in IRL racing. Maybe next year.
While I am a big fan of Dodge and Mopar racing in general, I do realize that Dodge will be a second tier manufacturer as long as those anally retentive old codgers at NASCAR keep on favoring anything Chevrolet. I do do hope that those old blowhards get over it and allow the Hemi back into racing, even at 345 cubic inches. In fact, that was the last exciting event that happened in NASCAR when Mopar re-introduced the Hemi in 1964. Nothing but good racing until the Hemi was banned because Chevrolet did not want to spend the money to develop a similar motor. However, Chevrolet did borrow an idea from Chrysler and produced a motor based on the old polyhead motor (early 'A' motor), also known as the single rocker hemi. They just put the rocker arms on pedestals and voila, the semi hemi is born. A 'small block' version of this design is being run today as the 'spec' motor. BTW, if NASCAR et al is worried about speed and safety, why not reduce the engine size to 5 liters? Otherwise, just bolt in lawnmower engines and be done with it.
As a NASCAR fan from 1954, I can say that I have seen many changes, some for the good, a lot for the bad. I just hope that real racing returns soons.
Regards,
steve
P.S. and Trent, stop whining! You're a grown man for God's sake! LOL!
P.S.S. Dennis, I like your taste in movies and humor!
