Scanners a must at Richmond
By Trent Cherry
If you've never listened to radio communication between a team and its driver, this would be the weekend to do it. I'm sure some of the people reading this will be going to the race and have the chance to rent a scanner or even buy one. I suggest you do, especially this weekend. With the chase coming down to a hand full of drivers, you know that tempers are going to be high, and that means radio talk should be good. If for some reason the chase contenders aren't saying much during the race, just turn it to the Kurt's radio. It's guaranteed entertainment. Anyone who has listened to a scanner knows what I'm talking about. Even if your not going to be at the race I think there is a way to listen in on the computer. Never done it but my buddies tell me they do it all the time. Its worth checking out for this weekend especially.
As far as Cali goes, well it didn't. The best part of the whole day was meeting Kelly Clarkson before the race. After that it went down hill all night. Pit stops were good and our first run of the night was good and then we went backwards. And if running bad wasn't bad enough, we got in a fender bender on pit road with the 19 car. He ran by his stall and slammed on the brakes, when he did Ryan ran right into him and put a softball size hole in the grill. So that didn't help things but it sure wasn't the problem. Hopefully we can get something together for Richmond. Holla back.

Attending my first race on Saturday night. Got tix from a friend who works for Nextel so have pit passes, etc. I was told by others to rent the scanners and will do so, so thanks for the advice. Hopefully will see some of the 12 team in action.
Thanks for clarifying the incident with the 19. Someone at ThatsRacin.com wrote it was Ryan's fault.

It's usually Ryan's fault when it comes to the media dc12, I guess since he isn't the media darling that Sadler is.

We have that computer scanner thing now. My daughter spends most of the race in the computer room listening to Junior. Sometimes she scares me.

I tried that "Track Pass" a few years ago, wasn't that good. The real problem came when I tried to cancel it, I tried to find out how before the free trial ran out, but it was impossible. Hope it has been improved since then.

They whole thing with the 19 car was an honest mistake. Most likely Elliott was looking for the 38 pits, He was with that team for along time.
That incident is just an indicator of how bad a year the 12 team is having. Hopefully you guys can get a win or two under your belt before the year is over.
Every driver goes through it at one time or another.
Good luck at Richmond, GIVE EM HELL!

I have one of those Ryan Newman scanners, the little round one, I'm too electronically challenged to figure it out, so it's been played with but never used.. Finally got me one of those that you just take up there and say, I want the 12 team, they program the chip and I put it in and I'm set...... they are fun to listen to... I love trackpass.....
Good Luck Saturday night!!!

Its nice to see 12 car fans not giving up on us. It hasnt been a good year at all but no one is giving up. Your gonna have your ups and your gonna have your downs. Hopefully we have more ups than downs over the long haul. As far as the scanners go, I know ill have mine roaming.

Trent,
If there is one thing about the Newman Nation...it stands strong regardless...we will ALWAYS stick behind Ryan no matter what happens. Maybe one of these days HE will get the horseshoe up his butt...LOL.

Can someone tell me who was mainly responsible for the set-up at Cali? Is it not the crew chief? I'm just trying to figure out how a guy like Borland survives week after week w/ set-ups that are almost entirely wrong.
One things for sure, if have your scanner tuned to the 12 - all you're gonna here is "too tight", "level 4 loose", "no grip"...etc. etc. Or, "anybody spotting for me?" Yep, can't even get the radios working right.
Assuming Borland isnt going anywhere soon, it would be nice to see the driver have final say in how the car gets set-up. Don't know of any other teams that have an arrangement where the crew chief isn't accountable to the driver in some way. If I were Ryan, I'd be looking for a new home.

Jesus man - the Newman Nation??? Get a life dude. And that wreck with the 19 car WAS the 12 car's fault. Ryan Newman has driven like a selfish jackass all year and pretty much for his entire Cup career. Trent, you should get out now while it's bad. This could be your big chance to go back to elementary school and work your way up to a 4th grade reading and spelling level.

If you listen to ALL the radio communcations, you will hear that there is a great deal of give-and-take and info sharing between Ryan and Matt. And the 19 braked too late for his pit box last week on pit road (maybe looking for the 38 pit sign instead of the 19?); Ryan had nowhere else to go.
We're behind ya, Trent, and the entire 12 team.

I'm glad I'm not the only one who thought it was the 12's fault...and our family is both Newman and Sadler fans. On 7 days it shows a replay of the accident and it looks like Elliott spins into the pit before his. I don't see how that would be considered misssing his pit if he hadn't even gotten there yet when Ryan hit him. Just looks like one of those distraction things like Ryan missing his pit at Watkin's Glen.

Great posts about the scanner chatter! One of the best things about being at the race is listening in on the teams. I signed up for the NOL RaceDay scanner for the first time this year and have thoroughly enjoyed listening in most weekends!
dc12 - have a great trip to RIR, its a great track and with all the extras you seem to have from Nextel, you should have the best time!
Trent - its going to take a lot more than this year's struggles to shake off the real fans. As long as ya'll aren't giving up, we aren't giving up on you! There is something about the 12 team that makes me believe you'll dig in and come back stronger than ever. Have a safe race!

Hey Gododge.....Why don't you go "get a life"? Might wanna try it before giving that advise out to others. JMHO.
Trent, Hey all teams have bad seasons from time to time. For a variety of reasons, this just happens to be thE 12 teams year.
Hang in there. You'll get it turned around. Newman fans aren't going anywhere.
Good luck this weekend.

The problem with race day scanner is that its time delayed so badly that your about 30 seconds behind the action and anytime anyone says anything worth hearing they cut it out and you hear nothing but dead air.
I havent given up on Newman but I do think that if the new nose and the new car dont help next year Borland has to go.

There's no way I'd watch a race at home or at the track without the scanner. Not having it is like watching a soap opera with the sound off. My only beef with the PitCommand scanner at home is that they tend to turn the driver's volume waaay down when they start swearing or getting too mad in general. That, and Evernham pulled his drivers off, so no more Kahne or Sadler.
Good luck at Richmond. It's been a tough year for you guys, but you'll pull through.

Its not my job to take sides when fans want to argue who sets the cars up. But in my opinion if the crew cheif can dictate how the car can finish and can control the out come by simply setting the car up, then why are the drivers the ones getting paid so much. It sounds like HEMI thinks that crew chiefs have more control then drivers. Second point, Matt always asks Ryan what he wants done to the car and then they discuss it. So trying to put all the blame on the crew cheif and none on the driver is stupid. Its a team deal, we win as a team and we loose as a team. We've had a bad season, its OK.

Another bad run by PRS. I hear a lot of talk about how engineers are what's important in NASCAR now.
Why doesn't PRS hire any?
PRS is a C-class organization right now.

Trent
I dont think anyone thinks its all Matts fault however much like any other pro team be it baseball, football, hockey or whatever. It tends to be the "coach" who goes when a teams performance suffers for any length of time.
Id say the crew chief is as close to a coach as you can get in Nascar. Cant fire the whole team so you fire the coach is the old saying.

Newman fans are still behind the Alltel Team! We've never stopped! I'm with Janelle, we do feel like yall will be back bigger and better next season..... I'm behind the whole team, that includes Matt! And Trent, your right, it's just been a bad season, not what the team wanted or the fans wanted, but yes, it is OK!
Rock on Newman Nation!!!!
And Trent, we'll kick your butt if you leave us..... we still owe Dennis a butt kickin'.........

Don't get me wrong, I think Matt's a solid crew chief - it's not as if he wasn't atop the box a few years back when Ryan was ticking off poles and wins like nobody's business.
But, if you read between the lines on my comment, what I was trying to gently point out is that Ryan has pretty limited authority at PRS regarding his crew chief and other personnel, at least in relation to other teams. It ain't a healthy situation - it shows week after week - and it's getting worse, not better. Trent, if you can tell us with honesty that Ryan gets the setup he wants every week, then I'll shut my trap. But I think that's far from the case... and I'd be willing to bet the two PRS teams would be finishing a whole lot closer each week (for better or worse) if Ryan had final say.
It's obvious a whole bunch of you were also listening on scanner last week. It was pathetic. Matt was screwing around with the tires the whole race and nothing worked. People, when you gotta add 4 pounds of air (yes, 4 pounds) it's a pretty bad screw up.. and a darn good sign of team that is totally lost. You could see it in the performance, and hear it in the driver's voice.
look, I'm pulling for the #12 no matter who's on the box, but unless things turn around quick, this team is coming back next year with a lot more changes than just a new nose. Count on it.
