All the talk is about the wrong thing
With the last race for the chase coming up I have noticed that all the talk is about the wrong thing. Everyone is talking about if or how the 8 car could make the chase instead of how the 2 made it. It wasn't two month ago that the two car was all but out of it and Kurt was on the brink of being suspended for his run in with the 20 car. Now, he s recouped the 100 point loss and has a huge lead on the 8 car. In my opinion I would say the 48, 20 and 2 are the cars to watch when it comes to winning the chase. Call me biased cause he's my teammate but the numbers don't lie. Team moral is up in the shop and blue duce is looking to win a championship. As far as the 12 goes, well, we just need to finish more races before we have a chance to win any. After Richmond the real racing begins. Holla back.

Agree with you about all the talk. But on the Newman boards people are talking about engines blowing and horsepower. People seem to equate speed coming off corners as horsepower deficit and overheating as an inferior engine. Not saying I agree, but what say you?

You are right. The bigger story should be about Kurt & the 2 team making up the points to get into the chase. It would have been if Junior had not been the one to be out of the chase. Anything Junior related always gets first billing - deserved or not. That's the reason I have a problem being a Junior fan. I like Junior but that's all the media (print & tv/radio) can seem to focus on.

It'll be a bigger story when the #2 team take all the marbles...First Nextel Champ...last Nextel Champ!

Trent,
The talk is about the wrong teams because of the Chase format. The focus of the media is on 12th and not who's winning or hot. And, the Chase, will do that for the next 10 races after Richmond. We used to treat every event as a special "Mini-Championship" in it's own right. Now they're just side notes to which Chaser placed where.
Here's a question for you, Trent. How about eliminations in the Chase? Maybe, after 5 races the back 6 drop back into the field with their real points. Afterall, it is 1/4 of the season and last season Stewart showed that these Chase-ee's aren't always the best racers that last quarter. They should have to earn their right to stay there. I believe he would have ended up 6th in "Real" points. What's a playoff w/o eliminations?

YES. Drop one or two off the bottom of Chase pointe after every race. Helen

If people actually liked Kurt, there would probably be more recognition for the team's effort. It's not only the accomplishment, but the person doing it when it comes to recognition. Just ask Barry Bonds.

In 2006, under the non-chase format, Stewart would have finished 2nd in points.

Hey Trent,
Still have to talk about 12th place. So many things can happen at any race, but you can be sure on the short track there won't be 30 cars on the lead lap.
Am impressed with the Blue 2 and teams comeback.
But to win, he first must be in. Not poppin' any tops til' we're IN there! Then will be the time to sell the chase. It's what we got, so run with it.
Go 2 &12.

Sorry, but Jr talk will ALWAYS triumph over Kurt talk..it's just the way it is.

Stop all the Jr. Talk - please!!! I can't take any more of this. Jr. this-Jr.that-if Jr did - if Jr didn't, etc., etc. Just S T O P I T!. I'm glad he is not going to make the chase. He can't drive a race car to save his life and doesn't deserve to be in it. If he was any good, he would have made it.

Marilyn,
Stop all the Jr. Talk - please!!!
Just remember, Dale Jr. had a couple or
three engine failures and he was penalized
100 points by NASCAR. DEI has seldom given
him a decent car to drive, so I wouldn't
go as far to say he can't drive a race car.
Any driver on the race track driving 200MPH
can drive a race car. Some are better then
others but then, that goes for everything.

if it was a skill thing about 43 or more drivers would be in.
or, maybe you know more than the drivers actually out there running it off into 1 at 200 or so.

I am a Dale Jr. fan, and very proud of it. It is DEI's fault that Junior won't be in the chase. Way too many engine/parts failures.
The thing I am most upset about, is the fact that Kurt did not get suspended for his Pit Road stunt. Musgrave got one for much less of an offense. Kurt should have gotten at least one week off.
Now that would have made the "Race to the Chase" much closer.
Kurt was a lousy Champ, and will never be liked or respected. Sorry that's just the way it is. JMHO

Busch and Jr. both had 100pts taken away. It's a non-issue as far as the Chase goes.

Kinda funny to hear people slam on Junior like that and say he has no business in a race car.
I guess his 17 wins to date isn't good enough for some people, but that is more wins than 2 of the past champions, and a lot more than most of the drivers out there.
Just something to think about.

Seeing Junior after he stepped out of his car at Fontana last w/e, and how he tried to engage his brain to answer the reporter, you could see how the race beats a driver down (and that heat didn't help).
I think they make it look so easy, we lay-people take for granted that if they're not Chasers, up front ALL the time, they can't drive worth crap. If we're going to castigate a driver, then why do the pit crew and cc mean anything? It's a team sport. Can't drive a car if you have a POS to drive, a doofus cc or slack over-the-wallers.
It's amazing to me that Dale Jr. and the #8 team are ranked where they are given the "afflications" they've had this year.
If you're going to talk about somebody who can't drive a freakin car, I'd say Michael Waltrip is beyond qualified.

Talk about ignoring good deeds, Newman has done some phenomenal driving of late. He is as deserving as anyone, but has had nothing but wierdness take him out of contention for the chase.
But even when he was so close, all the media could focus on was Jr. I too am sick to death of hearing about him.
Go Blue Deuce!

Trent, that's an excellent point. Kurt's overcoming of the penalty and making the field has been totally overlooked by the racing press and ESPN. And it was quite an achievement.
Posted by: Kurt Smith | Sep 7, 2007 6:00:19 PM
Trent, you piss and moan about all-Junior all-the-time and what do you write about? Junior! That's a hoot. And for all you bashers...get a life. Same all crapola all the time...find something different to whine about.
I have nothing against Kurt, though he does seem to be personality-challenged. I wish it was Junior (because I'm a fan) but he's also had a boatload of bad luck and I'll be happy for next year to come. He should be in the chase, IMO but that's life.

You are right the bigger story should be
about Kurt and the 2 team.
What the Media/TV/Radio focus on is no
fault of Dale Jr's, he has nothing to do
with it. I think, Dale Jr. woulld prefer
just to be his own person. Because of the
Earnhardt name, his life has been a living
hell in racing and his personal life. Dale
Jr. is never rude to the media, remember,
when he got out of his race car in Cali.
Watch the movie "Dale", you will see what
his life was like as a small boy growing
up, it wasn't a good life.
Michael
If people actually liked Kurt there would
probably be more recognition.
You are right Michael. Kurt has this bully
attitude and tries to act and talk like a
professor. He needs an attitude adjustment.
There is no comparison between Kurt and
Kyle. Kyle is a more friendly person, he
is always laughing and talking with to
everyone. As it stands, Kurt Busch will
never be liked and have as many fans as
Dale Jr.

Marilyn: Your post was childish and ignorant. Why don't you take the time to better inform yourself as to actual facts and some statistics before you open your mouth and insert foot. Specifically, check out career cup wins of all active drivers this season and see where Junior stacks up. There are only 3 drivers scoring more wins than Junior since he started cup.
To say that Junior can't drive a race car to save his life just makes you look foolish and ignorant.

I agree with you, you, bet, Dale Jr. can
drive a race car. I think, he has done an
outstanding job to be in the #13 spot. He
was penalized 100 points by NASCAR, had
two or three engine problems, plus DEI
seldom gave him a descent car to drive.
Dale Jr. can put the "Pedal to the Metal"
if he has anything to drive.
I am a Dale Jr. fan and I drink Bud.

There are quite a few drivers that didn't make the Chase, doesn't mean they can't drive! Some was due to equipment, some week in and week out just had awful luck, it happens to the best of them! I'm not a Jr. fan but he and Newman both raced their hearts out in Cali, just came up short! Biffle and Kahne can wheel a car, but both have had bad luck! It happens to the best of them, it's unfair to judge who can and can't drive a car, by who made or didn't make the Chase!
