After reading DT's blog and agreeing with everything he said, I noticed that there is a lot of "Nascar vs. the racing world" tension. It's not our fault that everyone in the U.S watches Nascar and no one cares about open wheel. Why do you think all the drivers from other sanction's are coming over to Nascar to race. Probably because the league there in is going to fold in a couple of years and they still want to have a job holding a steering wheel. The money, fans, and sponsors are going crazy in Nascar while the rest of the U.S. racing world is struggling. As far as these drivers taking over Cup, I don't think its happening. JPM was talked up as one of the best drivers in the world and he's done all but nothing in this series. I don't even want to here about his one win on the road course cause as far as I'm concerned thats for the donkeys. Until he can beat Gordon, Stewart, Johnson, and the rest of the elite drivers in Cup he'll always be overrated to me. Call it a good ol boy sport if you want but it sure beats the cheese and wine of open wheel racing. Not everyone is going to agree with me on this one but its just my opinion. holla back.

Trent
Very will said! This should be interesting! Now let the games begin.

I agree Trent, unfortunatly the name Dario Franchetti has more "Blue sky" potential with sponsors than say David Stremme, let's just say! it's all cyclical, we have had Left Coasters, USAC'rs, Young Guns and Road Ringers...I'm waiting for the next gen Alabama Gang!

Hey Trent! Tell me how many wins Ryan has had in the last two years? It seems that JPM has won more races than Ryan has this year.
Posted by: JPM fan | Sep 13, 2007 2:47:33 PM
Trent,
Correction, JPM isn't "talked up" as one of the best driver's in the world...he is one of the best drivers in the world. His racing accomplishments in several series rank among the elite of all time. Ask Jeff Gordon, Tony Stewart, and Robby Gordon what an Indi 500 win would mean to them and whether they felt they could win in Formula One.
Yeah, you and a lot of people don't care what happens outside of the Nascar arena, but a lot of people do.
JPM is sitting 20th in the standings..your driver is 14th. I wouldn't say JPM is that far off. And let's be honest, we all know that equipment plays a huge factor..I'm sure Ryan and JPM would be hire in the standings and winning races if they were behind the seat of the 24 or 48 car. If the open wheel guys can come in and run better than the guys they are replacing..who cares. Hate it for you David Stremme, but that's life. I don't think anyone is claiming an open wheel guy is going to come in and contend for a championship. There are only 4 or 5 championship rides out there. Maybe the COT will change all that..who knows.
Posted by: Michael | Sep 13, 2007 3:21:16 PM
Micheal you may be right in the sense that there are only 4 or 5 championships rides out there. If that is the case, then why do you think the money is so lopsided to the drivers instead of the mechanics that give these guys championship rides. If anyone can take the 48 and win in it then why is so much money given to a driver if he doesnt have the ability to control most of what the car does. Example: 50% of a companies salary is given to a driver who says he can only control 10% of the way the car finishes. I call BS. Either pay less or perform better
Posted by: trent | Sep 13, 2007 3:31:28 PM
Michael; WRONG! JPM IS talked up because Nascar wants to attract the spanish audience.
Trent is right. He has done nothing but piss people off and wreck cars. He will get payed back. Chips got himself a genuine "Cavronne" now. El Gordo Poica Racing otherwise known as Chip Ganassi Racing hasn't gained any fans over the way they just short sheeted Stremme.
Posted by: John | Sep 13, 2007 3:37:31 PM
John,
So you are saying that Nascar "makes" the TV networks show JPM on TV and interview him because they want a spanish audience? I call BS. JPM is a story..yes in part to his heritage, but more too the fact that he is a championship openwheel driver and winner in the most elite form of motorsports (technically speaking anyway) on the planet. The money spent in F1 comparitive to Nascar isn't even close.
Ok Trent, I'll bight. So...the reason Kasey Kahne is so bad this year is that he has lost the ability to drive? Or..your driver Ryan who used to be a winner..hasn't won a race in what two years? We all know it's a combination effort between the drivers and teams.
And, truth be told, drivers salaries are not only determined by their ability to drive, but there ability to be marketable and sell and support their sponsor. Yeah, a driver's salary might be 50% of a team's salary budget, but his value is probably 50% of sponsor dollars.

Michael,
A lot of people DO think Nascar manipulates the caution flags, including Tony Stewart, so whats to stop them telling the networks, "Show more of Montoya" ???
Posted by: John | Sep 13, 2007 4:45:19 PM
John,
That's a pretty nieve way of looking at things. Does Speed follow Bill Lester around the track all night in the truck series because he is black? No...they recognize him in a respectful manner and do not mock him buy showing him when he is running bad. They treat him like the other drivers.
Yes, JPM's heritage is a part of why he is recognized, but it's a small part. He is always in the action for good or bad. And, he has done a pretty decent job of driving for his first year in stock cars.
Don't disrespect JPM, Bill Lester, yourself, or other minorities or sexes by claiming they are only recognized for their differences from mainstream Nascar.

yeah that's right
did the networks follow bill lester around the entire weekend and continue to say,"bill lester is the first black man..."
case closed

Lets be honest here. If you were starting a race team tomorrow and could pick JPM or Stremme, who would you pick?
Posted by: jeff | Sep 13, 2007 7:08:56 PM
The McLaren team was fined $100 million and stripped of its points in the constructors’ standings Thursday in the spying scandal that has rocked the sport.
Funny... a 100k and a 100 points and NASCAR thinks they have "got tough" on a team bendin the rules.
Call me when NASCAR grows some balls.

Trent look past the end of you nose. It's Montoya's rookie year and he's already won a race. I don't care if you think road racing "is for donkeys". I love road racing and love watching the Cup guys drive them. It's requires a lot more talent to win on a road course than it does an oval. Besides, how many wrecks and accidents did Gordon cause in his rookie year? How about any of the other veterans out there that are "superstars" in the sport? Also pointed out by several submitters - Newman hasn't won a race in two years! What's your excuse? Apparently Newman is overrated as well. Finally STFU about "wine and cheese". Have you ever been to a Cart or IRL race? I have and there's about as much wine and cheese there as there is at a Nascar race. Yet another stupid stereotype about open wheel. Give Montoya another year and he'll be a threat. Just remembered, he's also been dealing with the COT as well (as has everyone else) but that's an added burden on a rookie.

Wow! Looks like you could use some love right now! So, Love ya Trent! :) Best of luck to you and the Alltel Gang at New Hampshire!

Yes ive been to an Irl event and there is no comparison to the cheese and wine of there event and ours. On the other hand, I see most of you open wheel fans are on this blog complaining about Nascar and it seems to me if you hated it so much you would go visit an IRL blog. Oh wait, theres not one. If they cant get fans in the stands they surely cant get people to read a blog. Back to the JPM thing. He's already leveled our front carrier and almost killed our jackman this year alone. He hasnt even finished his first year and all of pit road cant stand him. It wouldnt hurt him to take people into consideration before plowing thru them on pit road. You know its bad when his crew comes up to you before the race and apolagizes to you in advance for the driver. Even the crew is embarassed. Holla

If they had a blog what language would they use?

Michael,
I didn't say I believed that, I said a lot of other people do. Just like there is a bunch of the red army that thinks Teresa was causing Juniors motors to intentionally blow up. I didn't see her in the car overrevving the motor or driving the wheels off of it. I pull for the 24. A lot of the stuff I have heard from other fans this year is laughable!
And yes I'd like to see Bill Lester get more air time as well as better trucks.
I bet you he knows how to enter a pit without hitting people, right Trent?
Posted by: John | Sep 13, 2007 11:25:20 PM
The amazing thing about all the bullshit negative comment towards both Trent and DT are from people that watch the race sitting at home on their fat asses with beer and nachos and think THEY know what they are talking about. Not one person that is posting this bullshit has been on pit road holding a 80 pound tire or are sliding to your knees with an airgun with brake dust blowing up in your face AND having 3400lb cars brushing you and still bust a sub 14 second pit stop, not once but as many as 10 times or more per race. Till YOU do it, I don't think anyone of you is qualified to say ANYTHING.

yeah i was a open wheel fan years ago.
back then the drivers spoke english and had names like rick, al sr, al jr, danny, michael, bobby, jim, roger, gordon, johnny, and joe.
as time went by the americans were replaced by foreign drivers. many times because sponsor dollars dried up so the owners hired anyone with a sponsor to pay the bills.
a lot of the time it was a large company from the drivers home country. broadcast the race in that country and the fans respond.
so as years go by you can go to walmart and buy your cheap shit made in china, head out for the races in your camry with a jpm sticker, and cheer your foreign driver.
and then you can feign concern and whine about all those guys you can't pronounce their names and watch the average american slowly loose interest.
well chip was it worth it?
was it worth it in open wheel too?

Trent - great topic to discuss. Too bad it's turned into a pissin match about the drivers.
Nascar is enjoying being at the top of the charts but can it last? I'm really concerned it's headed the way of CART. I've got strong opinions of the flood of open wheelers coming in and am concered about the effect it will have on the league over time. Nascar through it's own promotion has become such a behemoth that it just may be it's own demise sooner than later.
And as far as the above arguments JPM vs. RJN vs. HMS - drivers good or bad are just one link in the chain. It takes the whole team to be a winner.
Out.

Don't like Juan or Jr. or anybody else shoved down my throat. Period. I have noticed they quit shoving Juan the second half of the year. You betcha buns NASCAR tells the announcers and cameramen who to give extra camera time, they also critque what they say on the air. Kyle Petty is the only announcer anymore who has the kahoonies to stand up to them. And he is not even a 'real' announcer. Maybe that is why. NASCAR has been preaching diversity for several years now....and when Bill Lester tried to run with the big boys a time or two......camera time. Bill is old news now, as is Juan. I don't care where they came from or what their nationality is, example,........ Jr.

The open wheel drivers are the flavor of the month with the owners. Hopefully when they fail to perform the sponsors will get upset and send them back to wherever washed up open-wheeler's go. You gotta admit though, the former USAC boys rule the roost. Gordon and Stewart are super talents. Will and open-wheeler ever reach that level, who knows?

Spike...get over yourself. We get to complain, speculate and spread our BS because we pay the money that keeps your world spinning. What arrogance!
