Starting over
As depressing as it is that our driver is leaving, the worst part is that I have no clue who is taking his place. You guys have heard the same rumors i have and there's nothing to really get fired up about. When you build a team and relationships for years and then slowly its all gone it reminds you of how hard it was to get where you are, and now we have to start over again. Im really curious to see where Newman ends up. I think he has a good chance of having a Kyle Bush type year if he get s in the right place. Let me re phrase that, i think he has a chance to have a really good year. I dont think anyone will have a break out year like the one he is having now. Any ways, back to our little problem over here. I hope they announce pretty soon who our driver is going to be so we can start to look forward and make plans for next year. At the moment we are all just going thru the motions untill the end of the year. Looking on to Indy. I really dont like this place. I dont care about the tradition or the atmosphere or any of that. Pit road is horrible and the area behind pit road to work in is terrible. They put a fence up about 15 feet from the pit road wall which gives you no room to lay tires or work. Go ahead and add on the 100 degree weather and you have one of my least favorite places to go. Its early and im grumpy so i figured i'd bitch a little. Hope everyone else is doing good. Oh, my fishing trip was great. We caught 24 makrel and the wife got sick and thru up over the side. I guess it was a bad idea to take a 7 month pregnant lady with us. Leave it up to me to screw that up, but she was a trooper. That s all for now.

Oh this topics saddens me a bit? Lots of great relationships formed on the Alltel team but obviously those will continue. I to think Ryan will be back to his days of old if he gets the right equipment. But I also hope he gets another kick @$$ pit crew. THe driver and the pit crew were a pretty awesome fit.
I am curious to find out where he lands, mainly so I know what new gear I will be sportin at the track. However....along the way I became a supporter of both the driver and the crew and that wont change either. The pride runs pretty deep with that team.
Not a big fan of indy, eh? Well I am still hopin for a solid run. Do your thang and get him a few on pit road. Gonna need it at that track. Glad you enjoyed your vacay. Hope your wife is doin better. 7 months and almost there. And I will sooooo see you at michigan.

Trent...
I know crew chiefs and engineers have different types of contracts, but let's say Ryan ends up at SHR....is it possible for Tony to pull the key guys from the 12 team pit crew over to the new team? It makes sense from the standpoint that we all know your crew is a proven commodity, but are you guys "locked" in at Penske or can you go elsewhere for a better offer?

Trent,
I hope you didn't really mean it when you wrote this in your blog:
"At the moment we are all just going thru the motions untill the end of the year."
Have you really given up on this season?
Posted by: Diane | Jul 24, 2008 10:48:03 AM
Diane, not giving up the season by no meens but lets be real, we have no driver for next year and its hard to get excited about the future or even the rest of the year when you know no matter what happens this year your gonna be starting over next year. Its just a weird time.

Trent,
I'm glad you had a good vacation, but now it is back to business and I know that sucks with no idea who you will be with next year.
I am sure Ryan will be missed but equally sure you and your team will rebound.
I am sure it is depressing.

Dude you spelled Mackerel wrong, didnt you go to college?

Oh geez, here we go again Trent! I will probably get blamed "again" for the post above me by some scientific research by the psycho's out there!
As far as your post Trent, like I said before. Your a good man and a true professional. Loosing a super star like Ryan will be a bit depressing but life will go on and just do what you do best! You have a baby on the way and that should be your focus beyond your current job duties.
Ryan needed to start a new Trent, the numbers speak for them selves. No racer with any kind of ego wants to appear to be a field filler. That's NOT your fault by the way.
Go with the flow and be as happy as possible. I guess we function better in that frame of mind!

Trent, it's tough for quite a few of us Alltel 12 fans! I'll follow Ryan where ever he ends up, but I will still always follow yall! So it's been pretty bitter sweet! And I wish he could pack yall up and take yall with him, that would make me happy!
I'm glad you had a nice fishing trip, you deserved it! Sorry to hear your wife got sick, hope she's doing better now!
I know Indy may not be the favorite track of some, but go kick some butt anyway! Take care, be safe and hold your head up high! Things will get better! Yall are an awesome pit crew!
Posted by: Darlene | Jul 24, 2008 6:14:16 PM
Hi Trent, Sorry to hear you sounding so down. Things will work out. Sometimes, change is good. Or, you can pack up and move with Ryan. Which brings up a question: Does the pit crew sign contracts like the drivers do? You have so much to look forward to, with a new baby coming! Chin up and work hard. It will pay off. No matter what happens, we'll still be fans of the 12 pit crew.

Look on the bright side trent, you still have a job. Less and less people can say that.
Now on to something unrelated. Anyone catch Rustys comments on nascar.com? That man is pure class I tell ya. Why cant he just let it go?
Posted by: smithfan | Jul 25, 2008 7:00:48 PM
I hope things settle for you guys soon. I can only imagine how unsettling it is not to know what the team will be next year. I'll root for the 12 team and Ryan's team - where ever he lands.
Smithfan - my blood was boiling when I read Rusty's comments! It makes him sound pathetic and childish - I can't even watch him on TV - it drives me crazy. What am I going to do - maybe listed to MRN while I watch.

They way I see it with Rusty running his mouth the way he always does when he wants to belittle someone, anyone, this is just more of his meaningless drivel. I can't stand him on TV, never could. I didn't think that he could drop any lower in my estimation of him professionally, but he certainly came through with this latest line of BS. Its a shame that somebody seems to think he actually adds something to the broadcasting business. He is a major detraction in my eyes.

Trent I truly feel for the 12 team. A state of uncertainty is a horrible thing. You all are strong individuals and things will work out.
Take care of the wife, take care of yourself, and have a safe weekend Indy.

I've finally reached the "acceptance" part of Ryan leaving, the anger and depression has basically left me not really caring about Nascar that much anymore...seems Nascar is preparing for the demise of the Big Three by allowing Toyota to have a runaway season. With everyone currently running the same car it's just a matter of time before all engines will be Toyota's. The races are as exciting as watching IROC only with 3 hours of boredom compared to IROC's 1 hour, plate races being the exception. I would say I can't believe Dodge would let Ryan get away but his leaving is consistent with their pending bankruptcy, how do they let their Daytona 500 winner get away? Hard to believe SHR will be a step up from Penske. It easier to accept him leaving if he lands in the 20 seat. While in the midst of my "anger" stage the thought has crossed my mind a few times to peal off the 12 sticker that I proudly placed on my truck in '02. While I do enjoy to see Kahne win I'm still a fan of the 12 Team, so if the pit crew sticks it out I will too. My choice has Truex at the top as the best possible threat to make the Chase, with Stremme a threat to stay around a safe 25th. What a tough position the pit crew is in now, lots of questions unanswered and huge decisions to be made and its sad that this chapter at Penske is ending. That fast and I'm depressed again. Hope you guys can feed off some anger and win one more in a Dodge this year-go gettem
I re-wrote this a few times to edit out the "anger" that kept surfacing, a harsh statement about Kyle Busch and a severe ass-ripping towards Chrysler could not be tamed and had to be deleted. The original paragraph was very mean spirited and not very tasteful for this family oriented blog. In all seriousness though Rusty Wallace is a huge asshole and sub-medi-ocre racing analyst

I just read the Rusty comment and i dont really agree with it. I like Rusty and he personally gave me my first job in racing but word around the shop was that Ryan had a contract waiting to be signed for months now. So how could Roger have fired Ryan when he had a contract for him. Second, how bad are you going to look if you FIRED Newman and brought in some one of lots less talent. The way it looks now that might be the case.
Posted by: trent | Jul 26, 2008 5:57:11 PM
Ganassi fired Stremme.
Hendrick fired Mears.
Why?
Maybe they were not performing or what some can consider untalented.
I do not believe Penske fired Newman. Rusty was out of line. Not sure why he had to be so tactless.
Funny thing is one of the fired guys mentioned above may get to drive the 12 car. This is what I consider hard to believe. No big name?

Rusty is an idiot!!! Ryan's the man...Rusty knows it and hates the fact that he will never be half the man or driver Ryan is!
Posted by: Amy | Jul 26, 2008 11:01:03 PM
There is no way an owner would fire the guy that brought home the hardware of the 50th running of the Daytona 500.

Hey Trent,
Try to put it all in the rear-view mirror, and look foreward. None of us know exactly what is out there.
It hurts after all the years invested in rooting for Rusty. He has plenty of his own problems, so just stay above the fray.
Your blog has been a good thing. Still rootin' for ya. Hang in there.

Wow,
Rusty bitches, he always has. Ryan fired(per Rusty) Roger call BS on Rusty.
Ryan is leaving... Roger is searching now for a driver. Appears Pit Crew gave up per above... on Ryan now... Kurt out at the end of 2 years...
Deleted the last whole thing..

Looks like Ryan will be teaming with Tony, a good balance. A level headed racer with a good family background and a spoiled rotten cry-baby that can't keep his hands to himself...Next year will be full of Tony's meltdowns when his cars can't break the Top 15 except for road courses just like Robby Gordon. Reporters will have to wear helmets and facemasks when asking how his day was.
Posted by: MoparDave | Jul 28, 2008 9:04:37 AM
I hope Newman will get to take you guys with him. I think ya'll are the best & you know you're going to have to put up with me next year no matter who your driver is. Best of luck to you guys for the rest of this year! See ya in Bristol and I will bring treats!!!!!

Trent,
Your blog title made me sad. It is short but speaks volumes. The human side to all this tends to get lost in the business at hand: what # will he have, who will he drive for, what will I do with all this stuff I’ve bought, etc. I am sorry you all are losing a friend to work with. From what you all say there is a close bond that has formed through the years. You are faced with working the rest of this year, giving it your all (as I am sure the team will do) yet grieving over the loss you all are facing.
Good luck to the team. I hope you all survive the transition period. And no, it will never be quite the same. I hope to have the opportunity to cheer you on again in Newman's pits.
Hang in there.
Karen

HAH! Nothing like watching cars go by and wait another 55 or so seconds for them to come around again. Indy isn't about watching the race, its the atmosphere.
I quit watching the race and tivo it and watch it later.

You know, it doesn't matter what the subject is, the Tony haters will always surface. Pathetic. Having said that, I wish only the best for Ryan Newman and hope that wherever he lands, he'll do well. Best of luck to all on the 12 team. I enjoy the blog. Hope you guys get a good driver and have a very successful '09.
