No race talk, its fantansy football time
Im gonna take the week to talk about the up coming fantansy football draft that we have here at the shop. Being as that there isnt much racing to be talked about from my end i figured i would take this time to get some insight on the upcoming fantasy football season. Last year our car cheif, Bryan Dilly, won our league and this year i got to put an end to it. Our draft is scheduled for this Monday in the breakroom. We have 12 teams in our league and i had the 5th pick but traded it for the 12 and 13th picks. I might have already screwed that up. Anyways, i figure most people that watch sports or even racing are in some kind of fantansy league. I need some help with the draft and some sleeper picks. Im open for any suggestions so let me here em. If you not a fantasy player than just disregard this blog because its not gonna make much sense to you. Holla.

you will have a better chance at pikin something good outta your nose than 12 & 13. Might as well save the worst to first blog for next year.

I would draft Kevin Walter, Najeh Davenport, and Testaverde and then trade them for LT and Andre Johnson and Randy Moss.

Trent-
You may have to throw in Olando Mare to make this trade fair.

Sometimes you have to ask yourself WWCKD?

HAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA
Actually I think he could get Delomme and probably Shaun Alexander at those picks. Just think Trent you went from having a stab at the likes of Adrian Peterson, LT, Drew Brees, Tony Romo....now you can get a couple hairy bugars out of your nose.

Go WR, WR with your picks....of the top 30 scorers last year only 7 were RB's. If you need a sleeper TE, Zack Miller for the Raiders...had more catches than any other rookie and with a young QB in JaMarcus, he'll look to him a lot! Plus...LSU QB's can only the throw 10 yards a pop!

Trent,
It would be easier to give advice if I knew the scoring system you're playing under, but here's my two cents worth. In years past every FF team owner has had it drilled into their noggin' to draft two RB's in the first 3 rounds. Unfortunately this concept has not kept up with the times.
RB's have become runing back by committee these days. For every LT who is the main guy you have a team that splits the carries between two players. I would advise to pick the a QB from whomever is still available between Tom Brady, P. Manning and Romo (the top 3 on my board) and select either Randy Moss or Terrell Owens at 13 as one of them should be available. If they're off the board be very happy to draft Reggie Wayne. for your 3rd and 4th picks you will need to select the top two remaining RB's on your board. This year there are going to be about 25-40 RB's who score between 160-200 FFP for the season, at least based on the scoring format in my leagues.
In round 5 & 6 I would take the best available WR on my board or if no TE's have been drafted yet this would be a great time time to think about a top 3 TE Jason Whitten, Antonio Gates...
Draft your defense and kicker in the last two rounds and focus on filling out your team with the best available guys remaining on your board. round 8-9 would be a good time to get a back-up QB.
Good luck and let me (okay us the readers) know whom you ended up with and how you do during the season. Keep your eyes and ears open for sleepers and free agents during the year, I know a guy who won a league last year after starting 1-6 by getting the right free agents he ended up going undefeated the rest of the year and took home the money.

take your gut feelings and do exactly the opposite. a strategy like that couldn"t possibly make things any worse for you.

Ive been offered to trade my second and third round picks for the 4th overall pick. that would give me 4th and 12th in the same round, but i would loose the second and third pick. Its worth thinking about. holla

Trent,
The trade would give you 2 of the first 12 players chosen, and 2 of the first 36 players drafted. The person making this trade to you will have 0 of the first 12 players drafted and 4 of the first 36 players drafted.
Although you would come out of this with 2 FF studs, I would rather be the guy getting the two extra picks in the first 3 rounds. send a counter offer for the trade, offer 2nd and 5th round picks. 4th sounds great, but I'd want more players, not less. There are lots of injuries in football.
Thomas Jones of the jets should be much improved this year and available in round 5 and a rookie Kevin Smith in Detroit. The QB situation is in a state of flux in SF, but with Martz there they're gunna throw often. Issac Bruce is the clear #1 WR there and should be available after round 9. he would be a great depth pick-up as it will be hard to find a a teams #1 that late in the draft.
My first draft is sturday at 1. I'm picking 3rd.

Trent,
Considering you are drafting at the bottom, all of the best running backs and qb's will be gone. So, you will want to dominate a position to make up for it. Considering the best qb's...brady and manning, will be gone, the rest are really on an even level fantasy sports points-wise. So, dominate the WR position. Grab Owens and Moss. No one will have better WR's than you, and it will start a panic making others pick wr's, giving you better rb's for the next rounds. I would pick QB in the 5th round..just my thoughts.

Hey Trent,
Use those two picks to pick a quarterback, receiver duo. Drew Brees and Marques Colston would be a great on if they are avaialble double your pleasure double your fun. I have killed with Carson Palmer and T.J. Houshmenzada

My advice. Avoid Larry Johnson, Frank Gore, Rudi Johnson, Derek Anderson, Steve Smith, Antonio Gates, Javon Walker and any Denver running back. And whatever you do, don't draft a kicker until the last round. The Cardinal sin of any fantasy draft is drafting a kicker before the last round. Even if everyone else does it, don't.
At 12 and 13 I would probably get Ryan Grant and Terrell Owens if they're available. Then you won't draft again until the 36th pick. At 36 I would take Plaxico Burress. And then take Earnest Graham with your next pick. That will give you two running backs and two wide receivers with your first four picks. With the 60th pick I would take another WR. Calvin Johnson should still be available then. If so, take him. Then at 61 grab another RB. At this point you'll probably be drafting a lot of guys you haven't heard about. Kevin Smith from the Lions or Matt Forte from the Bears should be there. Then at 84 is the time to get a QB. If Brett Favre hasn't been taken yet then draft him. If he has already been taken then draft either David Garrard or Marc Bulger. Then with your next pick take Chris Johnson, RB Titans. Then you don't pick again unti 108. That's when it really becomes slim pickings. At this point you probably want to finally draft a TE. Heath Miller of the Steelers or Tony Scheffler of the Broncos are good choices. Then with your next pick take Reggie Williams from the Jags. The guy had 10 TD's last year and should only get better. The 11th round is probably when the run on defenses will begin although it may begin sooner. I say don't worry about defense. My strategy with defense is to cherry pick and just play the best possible match ups each week. If there is a defense in the free agent pool playing the Chiefs or 49'ers or Falcons or Ravens that week then grab it. Playing the best possible match ups will help you score a lot of fantasy points on defense and the Chiefs, 49'ers, Falcons and Ravens will probably have very bad offenses this year so picking up a defense from the free agent pool every week that plays one of those teams will get you plenty of points so there's no need to worry too much about defense in the draft. You have to pick a defense to fill out your roster but make sure you pick your defense last because it really won't matter that much. At 132 I would probably take a backup QB like John Kitna. Ricky Williams is the starter in Miami, not Ronnie Brown as some may think, so if Ricky is still there(he probably won't be) then draft him at 133. At 156 I would draft a super sleeper, James Hardy. At 6'6" he should at the very least be productive in the red zone if nothing else which means TD's for you. And if he doesn't work out then you really didn't lose much with your 13th pick. At 157 I would take whatever the best defense left is and with your 15th and final round selection(I'm assuming your draft only has 15 rounds although I don't know for sure) take the best kicker left.
But remember, the draft is only part of putting together a good fantasy football team. Always pay attention to the waiver wire and which undrafted players are performing well. Ryan Grant and Earnest Graham are two examples of players who were undrafted last year that had great seasons. So when you see a player have a great week, make sure you pick that guy up before someone else does.
And pay attention to match ups. Just like I mentioned about cherry picking with your defenses, watch who your star offensive players are playing every week. If Ryan Grant is going up against the Vikings, a team that's known to be great against the run, you may not want play him that week and instead play one of your other running backs with a more favorable match up. If one of your players is hurt then you may not want to start him even if he is playing because he might not be effective. And if you do make the playoffs, pay attention to which players actually play the last few weeks and which ones sit out to rest for the real NFL playoffs. Ryan Grant or T.O. or Burress may not play in week's 16 and 17 because their coaches want to rest them and make sure they're healthy for the real playoffs. If that's the case then you gotta make sure you don't start those players because you'll just end up with 0 points and that won't help at all. There are a lot of things that go into a championship winning fantasy team. The draft is just one part of it. You have to make sure every part is done well if you want to win, just like in racing. You can have a fast car but if the pit stops are slow then you probably won't win. Or you can have a fast car but if the reliability is bad then you won't win, or if the driver makes a mistake, etc. etc. The same applies to fantasy football. Everything has to go right to have a great season. You can't just have a great draft. You have to keep track of injuries, watch the waiver wire for hot players, make sure you keep track of favorable and unfavorable match ups, and then once you get to the playoffs keep track of which of your guys are actually playing and which ones are resting for the real playoffs.

I never could understand why Newman never got into football pro or professional?
Graduated from Purdue(not a note worthy college)but yet not a word about there football team.
Newman's from Indiana and NOT a Colts fan. Man, a great team to watch on Sunday and Ryan's playing with Bambie and fish!
Come on Ryan, get the football fever brother!

Remember, Manning retired. (Which one? Both of them - ;-) )
In the sixth round always go for T.J. Howshmazoad - lock it up. Then go for T.J. Howshmanilly, then go for T.J. Whosyourmamma, and finally conclude with Howshmazilly.
CHAMPIONSHIP!
;-)
One more thing - get the NY Giants Girls with the handslap and hip gesture, then get Sheila.
;-)

Hey Trent,
Yes, I have a fantasy team. It is called Stockcar Challenge.
It is time for a guest, if you can't talk some racing.

Looks like the light is starting to shine through the clouds now. With the shift from racing to football it appears that Ryan's crew may have bailed long before Ryan did. Think about it!! Think about this also: Nascar sure is prepping the outcome of the chase by giving the nod to the 48 car yesterday. Does anyone think that car would pass a "real" inspection or is Nascar toying with a Kyle/Jimmie/Carl shootout? If so, then Toyota/Chevrolet/Ford is represented, when does the 9 car get the free pass like the 48 did at Fontana? Got to have the fresh young faces in the ads you know!!
