Busch and Big E
Once again i was at the California track and listening to the intros i heard the most boos I've ever heard when Kyle Bush was announced. I couldn't help but think about the days when Big E was around. Now, i will say that i was not around for many of those days. listening to the people at the shop talk and fans in general talk about Big E its hard to find someone who really didn't respect or like him. I'm having a hard time figuring out why fans hate Kyle B. with a passion but adored Dale Sr. So Ive come up with some ideas of why the fans like one but hate the other and for doing the same thing. Comparisons: They both race hard, both race to win every week, both have no problem with what people or drivers think of them, both have a bully personality, both will move you out of the way to win. Here is where i think the differences start. Kyle is a punk. Don't get me wrong, i like KB but lets face it he couldn't hold his own in a day care fight. Kyle is not respected by the fans because he hasn't earned it yet. Big E has the championships the wins and the respect of all the fans that liked him and hated him. KB doesn't have many fans and the ones that do like him probably agree that he is still a little punk. He has all the talent in the world but he has to learn to channel it in a positive way. Big E had a way of running people over and still got cheered in victory lane. KB gets the hell booed out of him weather he wins, looses or wrecks. I guess your asking why I m talking about this subject and some of you die hard Dale fans are probably wondering why the comparison is even being made. All i am talking about is the reaction that KB has been getting for racing in the same manner that big E did. I feel they both race some what the same but the fans react totally different from one to the other. Just wondering what other race fans think who have been around for a lot of Big E's races and have seen the crowds responses towards KB. Maybe I'm reaching but you cant say that I'm completely out there.

Trent,
I agree with your statement, I realize alot of folks don't! Sr. would boot you right out of the way, didn't matter if he wrecked you or not, you were moving over, one way or another! Seems to be alot more fans since his death! Sr. got boo'd quite a bit himself, there were a whole lot of folks that didn't care for his style of driving! I didn't care for him, but at the same time, I was heartbroken when he died! It's something you'll never forget! I guess it was more the way Sr. came across as opposed to Busch! He's just a jerk! Plain and simple! He presents himself all wrong, but he doesn't seem to care and he's winning races, so guess it really doesn't matter how big of a jerk anyone thinks he is!!! :)

Trent, I often ask those very questions as how the "Double Standard" work on Kyle Busch, Now I am one of BIGGEST Dale Earnhardt Sr fans...Jr not so much. When Kyle debuted I was big critic of his...Dart with no feathers, If the track didn't have walls he never cross the start/finish line, But two years ago in the season opener Daytona 500 I saw a spark of maturity when he got into the back of Mark Martin and instead of turning him he backed off, let Mark gather it up, and proceeded to pass him clean, THEN in May he LIT UP Rick like Roman candle at the All-Star and I thought Oh Hell...BUT since he has come to JGR, and is having a dream season...the Championship is his to loose! With that being said Dale Sr wasn't much a saint when he he won his first championship either, Today I am proud to be a Kyle Busch Fan, If Kyle is an arrogant punk...then I must've been an arrogant punk too when I raced...I raced others how they raced me, I don't see pouting...I see dissappointment, at the two races I've been at I heard more cheers than jeers...and in my opinion He needs to start blowing kisses to the fans when he wins...Only time will tell, But right now Kyle is on a mission!

Once the Chase starts, Kyle will fade faster than a red car in the desert. He is a great talent, but he is still missing something that seperates the men from the boys.

Long story short, I think KB is just one of those drivers that doesn't really relate to the majority of NASCAR fans. It's the problem his brother had, and the problem that a lot of today's drivers have. NASCAR fans want to see a driver who has struggled to get where they are (or with the last name Earnhardt) succeed, and I'm no different. I know Kyle has all the talent in the world and will give him all the props he deserves as far as that is concerned, but he'll never come close to Dale Earnhardt. Dale had the whole package, Richard Petty had the whole package, Tony Stewart has the whole package, it's not just how good you are at turning left (and right), it's being someone that the average man wants to be.

Kyle Busch and Big E - both thugs, both deserving of zero respect, both Jack Tatum, both worth forgetting. The hell with both of them. Give us back racers who raced everyone clean.

Everybody didn't like Big E's driving style, we didn't, he was a bully. He was always interesting to hear in the interview afterwards, but could make us so mad we wanted to spit. He would push anybody around who would take it and NASCAR let him by with it for years. It is a thousand wonders he didn't kill Terry Labonte, or somebody else. He didn't just bump and run, he crashed 'em and run. He didn't like it when they returned the favor either. He was so disliked by some fans.... as was Jeff Gordon to start with.... that he told Gordon, when Gordon was booed (as bad as Kyle)that he/Big E, would rather be booed than nobody know who he was and that, that meant he (Jeff) had made it. Makes sense, huh? Big E's death was a huge blow to the sport, for sure, and NOBODY wanted to see that happen, but contrary to the fairy tale, that everyone loved him, as with Jr., that is just not true. The media and NASCAR like to shove it down our throats but they can't make us swallow it. Kyle is a racer, no doubt about it, and even tho I don't like to see the same person win nearly every week, unless it is my driver, LOL, I am enjoying watching him show the whole NASCAR world that HE is the man to beat on the track this year, no matter who the media shoves down our throat every week. Actions speak louder than words on the race track. He is fun to watch, as long as he stays the hell away from Kasey. (another LOL,) but I MEAN it.

The two shouldn't be mentioned in same breath. Big E was a common man who worked his way up from Poverty, and fought to keep what he had earned. KB is a lil' spoiled punk who has had his butt wiped for him since he was born. Big E earned his respect, KB has had his bought for him, or at least they tried. Both will bump somebody to win, as will all 43 each week, the differnece is when Big E got bumped (like by Mayfield at Pocono, he shrugged it off and said"I'd done the same thing". When KB gets bumped, its "boo hoo, they are nt playing fair." Guarantee you he wears panties. He wouldn't be half the on track bullie he is if the France/Helton regime would let the drivers "discuss" their differences on pit road after the race is over. Plus, a lot of fans know that it necessarily KB's talent thats winning , its the extra HP that Toyota is being given right now. Odd that he wasnt that good in a Hendricks Chevy!!!

Big E got just as many boos as KB. Matter of fact Big E was the one who coined the phrase, "As long as your getting boo'd or cheered your alright, it's when they are silent you got something to worry about." He told Jeff Gordon that when everyone was boo'ing Gordon. Who cares how they got to the top, the top is much different to get to than it was when Big E was climbing. You can hate on KB all you want to and I don't care for him, I'm rooting for the 99, but he is an elite talent that doesn't come around every day. And I'd also say wait till KB hits the wall hard enough, he will slow down a little then :)

There really is no comparison. Kyle got into Cup at 19 and is only 23 now. Sr. never raced in Cup until 24 and that wasn't even full time. He ran all of 8 Cup races until he was 28. So who really knows what Sr. would have been like if he was coming up in this era the way Kyle did. He may have been no different than Kyle in terms of personality if he got a full time Cup ride from someone like Hendrick at 19. We just don't know. I just don't like comparing people from different eras in any sport.

Ken I agree that it is hard to compare two different athletes or drivers in two different eras. Its unfair but its worth talking about.
Posted by: trent | Sep 3, 2008 2:28:14 PM
No comparison, Dale was a rough tough customer. I didn't like him, but I respected him. I got about as much respect for Kyle as I do for PeeWee Herman. Hmmm he does look like PeeWee doesn't he?
Posted by: Rich | Sep 3, 2008 3:22:59 PM
Please do not mention the 2 in the same sentence.
The average race fan cannot identify with Pee Wee Herman. The kid has no story, no real past, no struggles, no personalty, no interests. Everything was handed to him and he never really had to work hard for what he has. Therefore he seems very ungrateful and cocky.
There are many cup drivers that sadly share that same silver spoon story. The average Nascar fan in his trailer park cannot identify with that.
Some spoiled rich kid winning gets everyone pissed off even if he is a good driver.Considering that most people are working hard to pay bills and in massive debt, no one likes a show off.
Earnhardt Sr. represented a hero to the middle class that some day they will not need to work 3 jobs to provide food for the family. He represented hope of a better life.
In todays Nascar there are very few cup drivers that represent middle class America with a great story to tell and an identity, morals, etc. They all seem so plastic and contrived.
We fans want real drivers that can stand by their convictions and can be honest.( IMO Harvick,Stewart and Newman represent that)
I can only hope that nascar can stop shoving these rich kids down our throats because it is very annoying.

carfan39 i dont know what book you read on the busch boys, but they did not come from money. kurt took over a rich kid's ride when that kid was killed in a racing accident and that was his, and his brothers, break. and they are making the most of it. you go from driving a late model pieced together with gum, to your tragically deceased rival's wealthy ride and then go win a cup 5 years later, how is that not rags to riches? you can say kyle was given a lot, but not in unmerited fashion. casey atwood, michael mcdowell, reid sorenson, none of them rich kids, all given the same opportunity, none of them merited the rides they got. like i said you can say what you want about kyle and say he has no past and he is a prick and all that, and it might be true, but he has every bit of talent as anyone whoever drove a car, quit hatin

The baby is due Oct. 9th. Good news its the week of Charlotte, bad news they never come on time. Its gonna be a boy and we are naming it Daniel Nicholas Cherry but gonna call him Nick. Ashley says thanks for asking and she is doing fine. Take care and be safe out on your snow mobile. Talk to you later

No Stremme talk yet? Good guy, best equiptment offered to him to date. I think he'll rival Newman in the points next year if the 12 Team stays together. I think Ryan "made a huge mistake"...

Well Trent, I'm thinking fans don't like KB because he says he doesn't care what they think and he does that stupid mock bow at them. He brings a lot of the scorn on himself. No personality either. I'm not sure what's exactly likeable about him other than if you have the need to only root for someone who wins. He's done a lot of that, granted but I still don't care for his personality. He seems like a jerk. Maybe he's not but that's how he comes across and says he's proud of it. Why is it wrong for fans not to like someone who says that?
I think the other part is that the media is always saying that the fans SHOULD like him because he wins. Sure, he wins but there are a lot of drivers who have fans for reasons other than the fact that he wins. Kyle's only selling point at this point of his career is that he's lucked into the perfect storm of a ride with the Toys.

"Odd that he (Busch) wasnt that good in a Hendricks Chevy!!!"
Even funnier that Little E is worse in that same Chevy

Jr hit the breaks before he it Kyle he did not mean to hit him,so dont think that JR is his Daddy he is not,Jr steal cant drive a lick and he will never win a title.and he will always be over rated

I don't dispute Kyle can drive the wheels off a car. But that doesn't mean I have to like him.
Comparing Kyle to Big E makes my blood boil. It was a diff time when Big E was running around the track. How does anyone know how good Kyle would have been in the car that Big E was driving or if Big E was still driving how he would handle driving the COT.
Trent, I hope everything continues to go well with the pregnancy.

Hey Trent,
All the best for you and yours'.
Kyle and Dale SR. in the same....
Kyle and Dale SR. in the same....
ha, just couldn't help myself.
At least "they" are not comparing Kyle to the BEST driver of our time.
Jeff Gordon.
chew on that you Ironheads.
