Taking New York by storm - or not
The interview started with Tony, and asked him about how this championship compared to the last one, and they made sure to reference the team pow-wow that set Tony on the right course.
Then they moved on to JJ, and asked him how it felt to have blown his chances. Next they asked Kurt Busch what it was like to be suspended for the last two races because of the reckless driving charges. They then asked Carl how he'll top his back-flips next year.
From there they moved on to Mark Martin and made a joke that his sponsor was Viagra. And running short of time, I guess, they skipped Ryan and Kenseth, Al looked at Rusty and said, "You're retiring, aren't you?" Then it was as if Biffle and Mayfield were invisible. All the while, they all ten stood smiling.
After a commercial break, all the drivers were standing by their cars as Al tried to introduce them one by one. Pity nobody told them there'd be a camera on them. They started in the back with Kurt standing by the 97 car, which was just an odd sight, I have to say. Then they moved to Jeremy. After that it went downhill. They introduced Ryan as Rusty, and when they tried to introduce Biffle, he wasn't even aware they were back from break.
Eventually all the drivers got in their cars for what was to be a lap around the block. Well, there's one hang-up. apparently they put chimps in charge. The parade lap was mostly like every other day on the streets of Manhattan - slow and mostly stopped. So there they sat, with engines rumbling, and Al waving a green flag like it was a fairy godmother's wand. Then the mocking began with Roker saying things like, "Oooh, they're really going fast NOW." And "Look at the people that are walking by - they're walking faster than the race cars!"
Then they showed an overhead shot for awhile with the cars sitting, bumper to bumper, held up by the 05 pace car and then some kind of rig that looked like it was carrying people on the back of it. It was all at a standstill for no explained reason. As they would move an inch at a time, Tony (who was in the lead with one of the "Today" hosts in his car with him) would let the pace car gain about three feet and then he'd lurch ahead. It was almost like he felt bad for not being able to give his ride-along guest a greater thrill.
The highlight was when Carl almost hit The Biff because he was expecting this parade lap to actually go faster than half a mile an hour. And then Biffle was bump drafting Tony. It was an overhead shot that spoke volumes - here they were, finally away from the surreal environment and back at "home" in their race cars, bumper to bumper with each other.
When the cars finally did get a tiny procession moving forward, the overhead shot showed cavalier New Yorkers just walking and ignoring this sight that was theirs to behold a mere ten feet away. But they ignored it like it was just another wacky New York parade. They just continued walking on their way, oblivious to NASCAR's visit to their fine city.
Of course, it was obvious why NASCAR feels compelled to build a race track in New York. Clearly the place is teeming with race fans. |

Carol,
This is why I hate NYC and made for TV stuff. It's never "A Welcome to NYC" it's more like "We have no idea of the real world and whatever you do, but you're damn lucky to be here in NYC".
They don't deserve a track or the Awards.

I was there, live, in person and had a great time. I took my lunch hour at 9:15 to walk down 42nd Street to Bryant Park (where Nextel had a fan viewing area), so I did not have the advantage of seeing the cars on TV, but I did get a front row view of the cars/drivers going by. And they were having FUN. It was quick, and loud, I thought it was great. I attended 4 cup races outside of NY this year! I can't wait for Staten Island. I wonder how many employeed race fans in Charlotte could get out of work for a 9:30am weekday parade?

Jeri,
LOL if the parade for the Champ was in Charlotte it would have been a day off.

I think that the main reason why it seemed like such a mess is the media. Jeri was there and loved it. the media once again managed to make a good thing and twist it out of shape and ruin it.

I know a number of people who went and had a great time - got to meet drivers, get autographs, photos and saw all the cars. From what I've heard there was also quite a crowd of people in some areas. But at 9 a.m. on a Wednesday there's not going to be as many people as on a Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m. when everyone is off of work. I thought about going but since I was still catching up on work from last week when we missed days due to Thanksgiving I couldn't take off this week - others were probably in the same boat. Yes, there might be less race fans in the New York area than in other parts of the country but we are here and there are definitely more of us than you think.

Carol, I taped it, and you pretty much explained exactly what was aired. Except you missed the part when they introduced Mark and there were a few VERY LOUD cheers in the background for him. I thought that was way too cool.
It was the typical media blitz - ask a question of which you know nothing about, and don't even wait for them to finish the answer. But Matt impressed me. I think he might actually watch a race or two.
I'm quite sure if I was there, I would have had the time of my life. I kept thinking what it probably sounded like w/ 10 Cup cars driving btwn all that concrete, steel and glass. Ya think Bristol is loud??? I would LOVE to make it one year.
But. . .a track on Staten Island? That was the traffic TEN - only TEN CARS had to deal w/. I know what it's like to get cars/haulers/safety in and out of Daytona and Homestead, and they don't have a 10th of the congestion, traffic, and whatever else NY presents. However, IMAX starts out with: "From New York City to Los Angeles. . .", so Brian HAS to meet that commitment!

Disappointed that the Today Show segment has gotten such lousy reviews. I'm a native New Yorker and I ran down from my office building around 9:15 so I could get to 7th Ave in time to see the "lap."
Wasn't fast, but that didn't matter. (City streets are aligned on a grid, not an oval. How fast COULD they have gone?) It was still a great spectacle.
I'm also a recent convert to the sport, and there are few if any, NASCAR fans currently in NYC. But I think it's an outstanding idea to bring this week to New York. Obviously the reaction in Charlotte would've been huge for something like this, and that's exactly the point: it would've done nothing to heighten the sport's profile.
Seeing these drivers come down NYC streets in actual stock cars was amazing for me as a new fan and if they put a track on Staten Island, I'd be first in line for tickets.

EJ,
You need to see them live when 43 cars at 750hp (each) start a race. If you liked them on the street you'll love them in race trim!
Now, a Bristol style track in NYC would be awesome. And, while estimating here, for the whole Bristol weekend it brings in close to 200k in fans.
And EJ....Dover isn't that far for a weekend nor Pocono. You may like them now on TV but you'd be awestruck seeing them live. So do it!

Keith,
I did Pocono in June and loved it. Later, I was told that it isn't the best place to see a race, so I'm counting on trying Dover next season.
Full disclosure: no more than a year ago, I held NASCAR and stock car racing in pretty low regard. In the time since, I've learned that there's plenty more to it than just driving in circles. And if I can be won over (the NHL is my first love), then just about anyone in this town could be too.
It's simply a much better sport than I've ever given it credit for, and I look forward to more NASCAR events in and around the NYC area. This week's been a blast!

First, I'm surprised no one has corrected my quote from the IMAX movie. I just played it, and Sutherland says: "From New York to California" - states not cities.
And EJ, I hope I didn't sound negative. I've always thought that NYC was the perfect place for the Banquet. I can't remember the first driver I saw getting his picture taken w/ snow falling all around him, but I truly thought that NASCAR had come a long way - back then - to have an awards ceremony @ the Waldorf-Astoria.
I've been taping and watching all wk, right along w/ you. Wish I was there! Wave to Tony for me!!!!

I don't think that the "Today Show" problems indicate problems with New York City, but rather problems with the "Today Show". There are fans here - maybe not as many as in some other parts of the country, but there is a long racing tradition in the Northeast - Tommy Baldwin, Steve Park, Ray Evernham, and Martin Truex Jr. all have roots in the NY Metro area. The facts are: (1) a lot of fans (such as myself) couldn't get out of work to go see the Victory Lap; (2) I'd bet a fair number of the people you saw on TV ignoring the cars are actually tourists - remember, Wednesday was also the day they light the Rockefeller Center tree, and New York in December is generally full of tourists from around the world; and (3) Al Roker's comments that indicate a total lack of interest in or knowledge about the sport - get a sports reporter in there to do the talking, and you'd get a lot different impression.
Don't paint all us New Yorkers as uninterested and not worthy of having a track in our area...the traffic will be a horror for sure, but it's easier than driving all the way to Pocono to be stuck in horrendous traffic and I've been doing that since 1999!

Mark,
Good or bad on Jr., it has nothing to do with the topic the blogger posted. Stay focused! Happy Holidays
