Autographs. And you are?
By Mike Harper
Thanks to a fan at MIS, my faith in autograph seekers has been restored. In this time of making money off the signatures of drivers on auction web sites, I witnessed something that I thought I’d never see again from a grown man in his desire to grab an autograph. I saw emotion. While in the garage area at MIS last weekend, I notice a gentleman in his early twenties standing around and he must have had 15 or more autographs on the denim shirt he was wearing. As the drivers walked by, he took his turn asking for their autographs and with each one he obtained, his excitement increased. A few minutes later as I made my way through the crowd to Jeff Gordon’s hauler for his question and answer session with the media, I saw the same gentleman standing in line to get Jeff Burton’s autograph. At the same time, Jeff Gordon had come in from the motorcoach lot and was about 100 feet from the back door of his hauler. As I’m watching this guy watch Gordon walk by, I saw pure panic hit his face.
I’m not a lip reader, but some words can easily be made out and in this case I was able to read what he said and observe his extreme desperation to get to Gordon before he was lost behind the door of his hauler. To be honest, I’ve never seen a guy run away from Jeff Burton so fast, but in the end he caught Gordon and got his autograph on his shirt and on a piece of paper. Later that day after the ARCA RE/MAX Series race, I saw the guy outside the ARCA inspection area and I told him that I witnessed his efforts and I was happy for his success. He replied that he’d been seeking out Jeff Gordon’s autograph for years. As a kid, he went to the Daytona 500 and Gordon won the race. Actually, it was Gordon’s first Daytona 500 win. The piece of paper that I saw Gordon sign earlier in the day was this guy’s Daytona 500 ticket from that day. After years of trying, he got Gordon to sign his ticket and in telling me, his eyes filled with tears. In NASCAR, dreams do come true and in this special case, it wasn’t about the money. Are you a people watcher? When I travel on business and I’m stuck in an airport, I’ll find myself not buried in my laptop, but watching people as they walk by. I end up doing the same thing in the garage area when I’m at the track. After running around gathering news stories and snapping some pictures, I’ll find a nice shaded place to plant myself in the garage area and I’ll watch people’s reactions when the drivers walk through. In doing this you see people contemplate whether or not they should approach a driver for an autograph to pure screaming emotion and I’ve even seen someone almost faint at the sight of Tony Stewart. Did you know that some drivers walk through the garage area without anyone ever knowing who they are? While Jeff Gordon attracts a huge crowd, some will walk through and not get approached once. I’ve seen it on many occasions. And some drivers, including a few past drivers will just ignore the fans. I guess they forgot who put them there. Don’t make me name names!

That sounds like something I would do if I got anywhere close to Richard Petty. . .faint, scream, panic. . .who knows what. I'd have to look really hard, but somewhere I have my ticket to the Firecracker when he won his 200th. If I could only get into the garage area!
You should have seen me when I saw Mario Andretti @ the St. Pete Grand Prix. I was like a little kid. I was literally jumping up and down, and I couldn't say a word! (And I'm 48 years old!)
I'm not a baseball fan, so when my ex insisted we go to Devil Rays games, all I did was watch what was going on around "The Trop." People can be quite entertaining.
Thanks for sharing, Mike. That is a different perspective than most of us get to see.

Mike,
I want your autograph and Davids and Marks and Jasons...I've been around the world a couple of times but for NASCAR you guys make this fun for me!

Mike glad ya had a good time at MIS, I on the other hand will get an autograph IF it is at a specified signing event. Maybe it's because growing up around the sport and seeing Rusty and Mark M, and all those who came up thru the likes of ASA, Artgo, and the Great Northern series...to me there just competitors...call me jaded. On the other hand, I saw TRUE fan exhuberance in late Oct. of 1987, When Kent Hrbek 1st baseman of the '87 World Series winning Minnesota Twins came into our shop for some gas so he could hunting. A Customer of ours stared at us slackjawed as Kent and I conversed about hunting, when he left, The customer couldn't beleive it was Kent, and hastily scrambled for some paper to get his autograph, He chased him out into the street and bless his heart,Kent stopped and signed it for him. I have pitted for a few drivers...had my Ex spill her soda on Dick Trickles driving suit, THANK GOD it wasn't the one he choose to wear! I had to chase my son out of the shop to keep from poaching "Twins" autographs in '91
My advise to autograph seekers...show respect, don't interupt them and be patient, and show some courtesy.

Hey Keith I got an Idea
" 3 wide outta Turn 3"
We where going to call our race team "Bump Draft Racing", but when one of our original 4 partners dropped out, We are pondering calling it 3 Wide Racin'... not that any of us are wide...just yet, I can't seem to squeeze in my Boss' SCCA car...at least with my knees in there CURRENT configuration. Anyhoo, of our three team members, 1 is hotshot wheelman...I'd say a diamond that is REAL rough, #2 is 'bout to be a Daddy so...he may get the poo poo from the missus, and well myself...I don't REALLY wanna drive BUT I will if I have to. Hi I'm Fan # 5, and I'm a Raceaholic...I don't know WHEN to say WHEN, Keep ya posted!

Mike,
I too saw that guy on Friday with the shirt and didn't get a chance to talk to him though. With that being my first time in the garage area my wife and I both found a quiet corner to sit and watch what was going on. I will share more of it with you later this week.
Trucker,
A bonus to the paycheck I get wouldn't equal much.....I do this for free.

Mark
David has sent me the basic math notes
but I still say
zero (0) times (0) eguals two hundred
so you get a big raise
200 times as much as you do now
It is so easy
and explains why my wife after 36 years still just gives me an allowance
this is true
took one of my daughters and her daughter to the bank and wrote a check on our account and the teller asked me(she knew my daughter) for ID and to add insult "if my wife knew I was running around town with the checkbook
sheeeeesh no respect

Mark - I wish I could've bottled the guys energy. I could get a ton done in a day! Also, I can't wait to read your thoughts about MIS. It was great meeting you!
Keith - don't I owe you a beer? You make this fun for me too! And by the way, am I going to need to send you and Carol to dinner? I'm feel a little tension over in the other blogger land.

It looks like I am the first female fan to post so gentlemen please be kind when I say, I would literally faint if I came up on Dale JR!! Wish me luck when I head to MIS in August.
Oh and Mike, great article, that's why NASCAR fans are soo lucky!!

My vote is for "3 Wide" as well. And also includes that famous number "3" that I believe all of you loved.
Hey, that's D Wade's number, too! Congrats Miami Heat!!!

3 Wide sounds great but there are four of us if you include Jason.
Does have a neat ring to it.
Posted by: Mark | Jun 21, 2006 7:19:02 PM
But Jason is really not IN Turn 3, he's in the spotter's stand.
Posted by: Shirley | Jun 21, 2006 7:46:09 PM
Mike,
I do believe it's a couple of cold ones. LOL, there is no blogger land beyond "Turn 3." I'd rather have dinner with Mike Daly, thank you.

#1 Why didnt you tell me when we built the new turn 3 shack we shoulda made room for a swag shop.
#2we need more space for BEER and the other cold drinks, how about getting a new fridge

Keith - OUCH!
Posted by: Shirley | Jun 21, 2006 8:18:40 PM
Keith is THAT dinner with Mike Daly at seperate restaurants or at the same table?
Posted by: Tbfka# 5 | Jun 21, 2006 8:27:06 PM
There is still four of us. Mike, David, Kieth, and Mark.......
Posted by: Mark | Jun 21, 2006 8:40:56 PM
Tbfka#5,
I think the same table at different restaurants. But, actually, dinner with MD wouldn't be all that bad...He may be irritating once in a while, but he does talk racing.
Posted by: Keith | Jun 21, 2006 8:40:59 PM
Yes Keith I too agree...He does bring something to the table, and he IS more grounded @ racindeals.com ....does HE have an assistant too?
Posted by: Tbfka# 5 | Jun 21, 2006 10:28:19 PM
I hope he doesn't have an assistant.
I would pay to see Keith having dinner with Carol.
And sorry Annie I was the first female to post.
Posted by: Diane | Jun 21, 2006 11:09:39 PM
My mistake Annie, Shirley was first to post.

Dinner with Mike Daly would be very interesting, indeed. I'd sign up for that. I think the Turn 3 Gang (no matter how many of us there are) should pursue that matter, in the vicinity of a NASCAR race to be named. Something during what's left of my summer vacation would be preferable, but I'll do my best to accommodate the wishes of the majority.
Getting back to to Mike Harper's original subject, I never was much of an autograph seeker. But I love it when drivers cater to fans' reasonable requests, whatever they may be. Richard Petty set the example many years ago, and one of my most profound memories from covering NASCAR is the sight of Davey Allison sitting on pit road and signing autographs until the last fan was gone after a victory at North Wilkesboro in 1992. This was a week after Davey's crash at Bristol that left him with seriously painful ribcage injuries, and just hours after he gritted out a 400-lap effort on the great 5/8-mile Wilkesboro oval.
Thanks for a great anecdote, Mike.
