No “Normal” at Pocono
Pocono has been one of my favorite tracks since I went there for the first time back in 2001. The place is just different! The surface is different, the racing is different, the fans are different, and the weather is different. A lot of times I feel like I beat to the tune of a different drummer and I guess liking Pocono proves that I do. One of the main reasons that I enjoy Pocono has nothing to do with racing there. I think that the Mattioli’s treat the racers and the fans with respect. The garage has a viewing area for the fans to look on at the action going on with their favorite driver and the racers have a nice garage area to work in. In my experience racing there I love the layout of the track and the fact that you really have to pay attention to small details to be able to run well at Pocono Raceway. I like the tracks with different characteristics: rough surfaces, different shaped corners, and different banking in each corner. The track just gives a nice break from "typical" but that is what I like.
I know I have been guilty of saying that experience wins the race at Pocono but I guess in the last couple of trips there I have been proven wrong. Denny Hamlin is the latest rookie to win there in the Nextel Cup Series and Chase Miller, a rookie in the ARCA/ReMax Series won the Saturday event at the Pocono Raceway. Carl Edwards also won there in his first or second trip there. I think a lot of this is the fact that everyone has really good equipment and people around them. Plus, these guys do not seem to be intimidated by any track anymore or they don’t listen to the guys that try to tell them the horror stories about certain tracks.
On Sunday, or maybe it was Monday, I heard Denny Hamlin refer to one of his online racing buddies. That might have been the first time that my eyes actually opened and made me think more about if the online racing really does help these guys prepare. We have all heard some reference made about video games and online racing now for a few years but I never put much stock into it until this past weekend. I heard some good explanations on XM Radio yesterday as to why this may help. Clare B. Lang interviewed the person that Denny mentioned in his post race interview and he said that the games probably help visually. Although you don’t get the "seat of your pants" feel you can gain a lot from this because the games are realistic enough to help with knowing lifting and breaking points, along with bumps and patches that are on the track. I am starting to believe more in this stuff.
It has been a little tougher to watch the actual race since going over and spotting for dad. I think pretty much everyone could see that Hamlin had a dominant car but it was impressive to see him come back after having a flat tire and spinning. That was cool no matter who you pull for. There did not seem to be any worrying by Hamlin as he marched back to the front. Another reason that I like seeing Hamlin win his first Nextel Cup points event is that he has a stock car back ground. He raced on local short tracks in the NASCAR Dodge Weekly Racing Series in the Late Model Stock division. I don’t want to take anything away from the guys that come from other forms of racing but I just want to give that type of racing credit when I can.
Pocono will always be on the top of my list but as you can see maybe not for the same reasons as you might think. So, we will see what Pocono holds in store for us next month as we go back for the second race. I am sure the weather will be a little different. The place always seems to keep us all guessing.

Great piece Jason. It is nice to get things from a driver's perspective speaking in terms we can all understand.

I like Pocono because I can schedule a nap for the event. I understand the challenges the drivers face and I appreciate how they like it for it's uniqueness but it doesn't make for good TV. 20 laps after every start/restart the cars spread out single file with 6-8 seconds between them. Only the Hamlin comeback and the Gordon crash added some drama. They even had a KC-10 Tanker for the flyby. I appreciate the crews service to the country but thats what you call a boring start. So, you can keep your PocoNap and I will continue to find something better to do as I DVR it.

Keith,no explantion for it but I liked this Pocono race. Most of the time I agree with you about their races.I felt there was a lot of good story lines going on{ie:Dennys comeback,Carls run after winning on Saturday, for just a few}.Jason good to hear your views.Be sure to let us know how you enjoy the "Irish Hills".

Short Lady,
Definately some good stories...but it certainly wasn't the racing that made it watchable.

glad to have seen DH do the deal
was very glad to see JG get out of his car
and I am not a JG fan
but other than the comeback story of the year it was a boring race
on to the "Hill's" in Brooklyn Mi

Keith, just zip it with the Pocono bashing. It's old, it's garbage, and we don't need it anymore,

I simply believe that if pocono banked its corners. Just a little bit even, the racing would improve. Imagine progressive banking there? That would be good racing. :)

Mike Daly,
Why don't you get over it? I'm just calling it like I see it. Speaking of getting old...you beat old horses to death every single time you post something. PETA should be arriving any day now! The only thing more predictable than poor quality racing at PocoNap is your stupid yap.
Jason,
That would be a terrific idea. Long straights and no banking is more conducive to Indy style cars. Progressive banking would help NASCAR racing there.

AMEN, Keith!
Progressive banking @ Pocono. . .what a concept. Get Benny and the bulldozer - quick!

Shirley make sure he brings the "CAT" dozer
and not the other one
and also don't ask "HUMPY" for advice
way to go Keith

Trucker,
LOL, Don't kick the Humpy (It's better if you make it sound like South Park's "Don't Kick The Baby.") Humpy finally got it right...They should ask him while he's on fire!

jason, progressive banking isn't all that hot. It's been a mixed blessing for Homestead, but then other tracks don't necessarily need it.
Keith, you're not calling anything, because what you're calling is bogus. Get over yourself. The only thing more predictable and less intelligent is you lying on this blog whenever you post.

Mike Daly,
Get over yourself there, Mikey Boy. Talk about predictable. I could have written that reply for you.

I think it's a clear case of Dr. Jekyl, Mr Daly...I don't quite understand how you can go from posting a comprehensive blog at RacinDeals.com to lunatic posts here!!!...unless he actually has an "assistant" working for him.

It is interesting to read everyone's comments. Thanks for stopping by and reading what I have to say, even if you don't agree with my opinions. I will try to get another blog posting out when we return from Michigan.

Tbfka#5 - it's all because of the audience. If you want some rational discussion out of me, reciprocate in kind.
Keith, you can't even write a credible response as it is.

Mike D.,
Sorry Mikey, again predictable. According to you there's Mikey D's opinion....and, well that's it according to you. Sorry shippy, it's a lonely world you live in. But, hey have a Happy Fathers Day. Maybe, unlike Pocono, we'll have some good racing.
Posted by: Keith | Jun 18, 2006 7:19:52 AM
Keith, there's truth and then there's your opinion - not always or frequently the same thing. We had some good racing at Pocono, better racing than we've had on the short tracks in ten years.

Mike D.,
Your opinion has no more value than anyone elses on here. Opinions are subjective and not chisled in stone. But alas, even this poconap debate is tiring so this is my last visit to this topic.
