Michigan’s all you can eat buffet
By Mike Harper
Entering the gates at Michigan International Speedway this past weekend was different from other times in the past. The crowd, sites and sounds were filled with its regular excitement about the weekend’s events, but I found the atmosphere and pressure to be different in the garage and media centers. With the implementation of the chase for the championship, combined with an earlier start to Silly Season, all parties including drivers, owners, teams and media are feeling the highest levels of pressure to perform. The number of stories the media were watching from Michigan reminded me of an all you could eat buffet. As soon as you were done with one story, there was another scoop to be added to your plate. From ARCA to Nextel Cup, there wasn’t a shortage of stories and unfortunately no time to hit the ice cream bar.
First day on the job Prior to Cup qualifying, the No. 38 and No. 19 teams were in line to go through inspection. The thing that stood out in my mind was the No. 19 team members had smiles on their faces, while the No. 38 team members didn’t. It was odd, but explainable. I observed both teams throughout the day and if a prize could be given to the happiest team in the garage, it would go to the new No. 19 team of Elliott Sadler. ARCA excitement Frank Kimmel came into Michigan with a point’s lead of 35 over Bobby Gerhart. However, after Kimmel’s incident with TJ Bell in the closing laps of the Hantz Group 200, Kimmel and Gerhart left MIS tied with the point’s lead. TJ Bell replaced Ken Weaver in the No. 20 Eddie Sharp Racing Dodge and came very close to winning the event. Steve Wallace added some spice to the event even after he drove his RWI Dodge behind wall and into the garage. After MIS, ARCA raced again on Sunday on the dirt track in Springfield, IL. Congratulations to Justin Allgaier for his first ARCA win. ARCA and SPEED really need to rethink their television schedule and add this one to the broadcast line-up. Cup cars on dirt sounds like good TV to me! Junior and Cousin Carl Carl Edwards found himself at odds with another Chevrolet driver during the Busch Series race at MIS. Dale Earnhardt Jr. punted Edwards on the last lap of the event to go on to win the Carfax 250. Much to everyone’s surprise, the MIS crowd booed Junior for his bump, spin and win on Edwards. In my opinion, it was hard-core racing and if Junior or any other driver wants to win a race that way – so be it. But if you beat someone that way, don’t complain when you get beat that way. Regarding Edwards, during the cool down lap he drove off pit road and ran into the side of Junior. Then Edwards made his way to Victory Lane to share some heated words with Junior. I must agree with Kenny Wallace. When the eventual winner of the race dumps a driver to win, the driver that got dumped should keep his mouth shut and move on. Don’t ever go into Victory Lane to confront the winner. Just say what you need to say on camera and move on. A time will come in the near future where payback can be delivered. Speaking of payback, Junior mentioned Atlanta 2004 (Edwards dumped Junior) after he won at MIS. So maybe this incident at MIS was an actual payback compliments of Dale Junior. Evernham and Crocker sitting in a tree? Is that too personal? Just asking. On pit road during Cup qualifying, Ray Evernham and Erin Crocker were standing next to each other near the No. 9 Dodge. It was humorous to watch the photographers react to this situation. With reports of their "personal relationship" making headlines, it was easy to tell which photographers struggled with the temptation of taking a shot of them together. When one got brave, they snapped the picture and moved right along rather quickly. Heck, just for fun I raised my camera and took a shot. After a good old stare down from Evernham, I nodded as a way to say thanks and went about my business. Sponsorship hunt Did you hear Kenny Wallace needs a sponsor for 2007? If you haven’t, you will. What about the No. 6 AAA Ford in 2007? During the post race news conference at MIS, Jack Roush said that Mark Martin could be back in the No. 6 next season. Reports have Roush not happy with upcoming driver Todd Kluever who is set to take over for Martin next season. Roush said Kluever could run less than 36 races next season or he could put another rookie in the car. In my opinion, this is a notice to Kluever to shape up or ship out buddy! Thoughts from MIS Dale Jarrett and Ryan Newman seemed to be very relaxed. It was nice to see these two guys with smiles on their faces and honestly I believe it’s because they have no racing worries at this point of the season. On Friday, Scott Wimmer looked to have the world on his shoulders. I will be up front and honest about my feelings towards Wimmer. I was very tough on Wimmer a few years back when he was busted for DUI. But since that time, the guy has impressed me. He’s worked hard, stayed clean and does all he can for his family. Wimmer has had horrible equipment since his first day at the Cup level and I personally think it’s time for a Cup owner with above average equipment to give him a shot.

I have the perfect solution for the No. 6 team and I will share it with the "Class" tomorrow on StockCarPitPass.com!

If Ray Evernham doesn't want pictures taken of him standing next to Erin Crocker, maybe he shouldn't stand next to Erin Crocker in public.

Mike, good observations.I have watched T.J.for several years and I think with the combo of Eddie Sharpe{former cup crew chief}and Jeff McClure{former driver and owner}his career will get the boost it needs. We had mixed thoughts at my house re:Carl vs JR.My daughter.who is JR's biggest fan,was angry with him.But did she ever get mad at Carl later.I hope Wimmer gets a shot at a good ride, but I think Kvapil is a better choice.Congrats on your new job.

KurtMan, or maybe Evernham should do what he should have done at the start - fire Crocker.

Mike, thanks for letting us know what happened in the infield and on pit road at MIS.
It seemed obvious on TNT’s broadcast that the 19 team was definitely the “happiest” and most prepared of the two. I really really hope RYR get their act together, cuz it just won’t be a Winston/Nextel Cup event without a Robert Yates Racing car on the track. I still miss the Havoline 28.
I enjoyed the ARCA race Friday night and was happy to see Brent Sherman get the pole and win. Totally forgot about Sunday’s race. Just as you stated, I have said over and over again - NASCAR and the various networks really need to work on scheduling events, so they can be seen by all fans. Granted, it wasn’t long ago I was lucky to see anything live, so I should be grateful. But now with all the high dollar technology, I feel scheduling should be re-evaluated.
I’m an Earnhardt fan, so I’m sure some don’t feel my opinion counts. But Jr. doesn’t drive like that on a regular basis. He has respect and IS respected by other drivers. It was the last lap and he was going for the win. I don’t necessarily agree with the bump and run, especially when it’s “premeditated.” But there are times when rubbin’ is racin’ and I believe Sat. was another one of those times. Jr. could have taken out his own car, and almost did. I really don’t think he had time to think about it, plus he had a hell of a run going and was too close to do anything else. (Although, I thought the explanation that Jeff Burton and Kenny Schrader came up with on INC was the best: he was avoiding a multi-car accident!) However, Carl racing down pit road and slamming Jr. –THAT was premeditated.
It's obvious Jack Roush wants Mark back. But the interviews I have seen when Mark is doing the “talking,” is obvious he does NOT want to be back full-time in Cup. Too bad we can’t “age” Matt. He is the obvious replacement for Mark. Or, as I posted on one of Carol’s blogs. . .retire the 6 until Matt is “legal” and then bring the 6 back with Mark as the owner. That would put Roush under the limit as a car owner, and maybe everyone would be happy.
I heard Kenny’s plea for a sponsor more than once. But ya know what - it worked last year - why not try it again this year. I understand the Marines are leaving the 25 with Ashton Lewis. Can you imagine having Kenny Wallace as the spokesperson for the Marines? It could be a perfect fit!
And Mike, I sure hope you don’t need a one-on-one interview with Ray anytime soon. That was a gutsy move, but one I would have loved to have seen.
Thanks again for sharing your weekend “events.”

I saw a sign at the beginning of the telecast saying 'seats available'I thought that odd with the race being in the motor city and all. Kenny needs more than a sponser, BTW the Marines have a height requirement, I don't think Kenny qualifies.

Height requirement - then how did Ashton get the sponsorship? He's not much taller than Kenny. . .but that was funny. :)
I never heard anyone use the words: "sold out." I believe Weber stated at the beginning of the race: "MOST of them (seats) are filled."

Mike Harper,
First day smiles because they finally got some of Kaseys stuff. They're smokin the Ganja if they think that'll last.
News Flash...The yr 2025...Roush racings #6 driver Mark Martin says Todd Kluever is ready to take the reins. Martin says it's time to put her in the barn. The only problem is he's so old now he doesn't remember if he has a barn and he can't find home.

Mike Daly - I wonder if Ray is worried about a discrimination lawsuit. I've only seen her drive twice and she's wrecked both times.

Hey Short Lady, thanks and tell your daughter that there's no need to be upset at Junior. Maybe it's just me, but it was nice to see him with a little emotion and the ability to drive with some aggression. He comes across as being too easy going sometimes and that second place is just as good as first. Could be the way the chase has changed the driver's mindset, but Busch Series or not, Junior moved Edwards to win the race and for me, it was good to see. (I agree with Shirley)
Also, if TJ could get a full time deal in ARCA, he could be one guy that would compete against Kimmel for the championship.
Shirley, your idea to retire the No. 6 is a great topic for discussion. That said, knowing a bit about AAA, I'm not sure they'll go for that since a few million bucks has been and will be dumped into marketing the No. 6. I will say, Kluever isn't getting the job done. When you compare past Busch/Truck Roush drivers who are in Cup versus current B/T Roush drivers, the current B/T drivers rip! O'Quinn Jr. and Kluever are 17th and 18th in Busch points. While some say it's not fair because they race against a boat load of Cup drivers, I can make the argument that since they can't succeed against the "Buschwhackers" and eight full-time Busch regulars - they ain't gonna make it in Cup either.
Keith - I got an email that said "first day smiles because Ray was at the track for the entire weekend." Ouch!

Mike, I thought about the sponsorship issue on the 6 as well. Do you know how much they actually put into the ride and how many years?
I just thought with the way sponsors seem to come and go lately, there might be a need on another Roush car next year. Are they all returning as primary sponsors next year?
I'm still seeing commercials with Jeremy wearing Dodge and Elliott wearing M&Ms, so I have a feeling they'd still air Mark wearing AAA, and I'd still get to see Fernando!

Hey Shirley, this is what I know - the AAA deal is for three-years starting in 2006 and valued at $45 million. The plan was to have Mark run in 2006 and Kluever take over for the 2007 and 08 seasons. AAA is also an associate sponsor on Kluever's No. 06 Busch car.
I think we'll see more and more Mayfield and Sadler commercials. They'll want to use them up this season. With the exception of Sadler and Ford - since he's now in a Dodge, I think his lawyers terminated any Ford spots. Oh the world of business!

Thanks Mike. Guess the 6 will be staying on the track after all.
No kidding - the world of business. Corporate America has definitely taken over.
