Did Stewart Bump His Head?
By Keith Ott
Stewarts comments at the close of Loudon border on the ludicrous, IMO. Here they are:
"I finally have the answer to the question people always ask: 'If you could change one rule, what would you change?' I'd have made this race a two race deal. I'd have had the rest of the field run their own 200-mile race and then I would have had the top 10 guys run their own 200-mile race." -- Tony Stewart
So, we would have a 33 car race with all of the major stars not competing. I guess this eases his conscious that none of those 33 would influence El Chase-o. Of course it never occurred to him that, with the #20 the best car of those 33, that 11th pays an extra million and winning gets you a race purse. No way! Not Mr. “Altruistic” Stewart…Give me a break. Fans come to see 43 of the best race each other. Sure stuff happens, but it happened in all 26 previous events. The good, the bad and the downright ugly is what got these 10 into the playoffs. Keep them all racing together. It’s not like Mr. Stewart lost any sleep banging around influencing the racing before. He’ll get over it.
Part Deux would be the 10 car IROC-like event. Except they’re not identically prepared cars. How boring could it get with 10 cars spread out over 1 mile plus. How potentially greater could the teammate influence become? Nope 43 guys racing hard is the name of the game. Always has been; Always should be. Close title contenders in past days were never separated from misadventure. To do so now makes as much sense as a soup sandwich. If Stewart feels bad he’s free to stay in the hauler and watch from the stands. Heck, he can come up to Turn 3. He can even bring the damn monkey. I've seen stranger in the stands.
Again, JMO
I just thought I'd repost this link to the old points system for those diehard old points guys. Sorry Bob, it's from that other site...not to be named. I'm surprised it's still up and updated. They must not have clever talented editors such as yourself to monitor these things...

Keith, I took Stewart's comments totally differently. This is his first year out of the chase, and I thought he was honestly expressing his own surprise at how nervous he was about the possibility of messing with the contenders. Remember how before Richmond several drivers were asked if the chase would influence their driving? All the chase veterans said it would, while chase rookie-to-be said it wouldn't! Well, Tony has a new perspective this year. I don't think he was being serious about the "two races" in the least.
On another matter, Jayski links us to a site where the fellow timed the race broadcast and commercials: http://www.cawsnjaws.com/Message-Board/259/commercial-breakdown-for-the-sylvania-300
Hope that link works, or you can paste it into your own browser.

Doug,
He's a great driver but I have problems with believing what he says in post race interviews. Says, "Be safe and patient on the track." Does - Uses the car as a tool for retribution.
Kewl site...That woman pays a whole lot more attention to commercials than I do. Me, I leave the room.

Doug
You’re right about what Tony was saying about the possibility of messing with the contenders....but he also said if it were up to him he would change it to 2 races, one with 33 divers and one with the top 10.
I really don’t think I would bother to watch a 10 car race even if it is for the championship

Hey
That's more then an hour of commercials.
That's sucks.

Diane,
I can't believe you didn't ask me to do the math for that. That site went way deeper than I'll ever go about commercials.

Keith
I wouldn't ask you to do that. The commercials you would watch and time are the ones with beer and girls in them.

If he is afraid to upset one of the Chase contenders then he should just go hang out at the Busch and Truck Series races. They all need to just go out there and race as hard as they did when they were trying to get into the Chase.

Mark,
Exactly, and I think as soon as he hits the gas that Mr. Hyde will be back in business.

Diane,
They have commercials with girls AND beer in them? Great, now I have to start watching them.

That's right Keith. You don't know what you're missing.

I had to laugh when Stewart made his comments after the race. I am sure it was a different feeling racing guys in the Championship hunt when you are not in but to have a separate race??? I hope not. How boring that would be just watching 10 guys racing. I like Tony (and several others out of the Top 10) and don't want to see them in a different race than the Chasers are in. That just would not be fun!

Good grief! I just clicked on the link. Someone must have really been bored to keep up with all of that.

Michelle,
NASCAR dilutes the action enough as it is with commercials. We want all the best racers facing each other for every event. How could the 33 car winner even be considered a winner? He didn't, after all, race the best.
Yes, she certainly was dedicated to the task. I hope she saw some racing!
Posted by: Keith | Sep 19, 2006 12:28:45 PM
Commercials: as a dedicated watcher of "24," I can tell you that an average "60 minute" TV show has about 18 minutes of commercials. Races aren't that far out of line. It's just that there are no convenient breaks in the action to show them!
Tony: I think we're all on target here. Who says you can't be racing hard AND be a mite nervous at the same time? Diane agrees, I think. Will he back off a win? No way. Will Tony Hyde emerge during the next nine races? Sure, why not? Also, I don't for one minute think that Stewart was being serious about having two races. Hasn't anyone her ever heard of things like hyperbole? Sarcasm?
Posted by: Doug | Sep 19, 2006 12:42:00 PM
Doug,
Oh, you mean he made a...hmmmmm let's call it a "Stewartism?"
BTW, I'm watching "24" right now as I clean the apt (Season 4 episode 19). I get my episodes off the internet, burn them to a dvd and they're high quality and commercial free.
Posted by: Keith | Sep 19, 2006 12:49:16 PM
Yes Doug I agree.
Posted by: Diane Sadler | Sep 19, 2006 1:22:48 PM
GOOD GOD MAN! they have have a show devoted to Jeff Gordon??..."24"...eeeew...I stick to my Speed, Criss Angel mindfreak, COPS(always looking for a cameo) and Gene Simmons Family Jewels!...oh yeah That 70's show

#5,
LOL, bite your tongue. You can't compare Jeff Gordon (#24) to Jack Bauer (24). When Jack has a bad day he kills people. When Jack has a good day he kills people. Ok, I guess it's hard to tell just what kind of day Jack is having. In season 5 Jack gets shanghied to China. Jack is ok with this. China has more people to kill. If Jack drove the #24 there would be no whinning about poor teammates. Jack would kill them next time by.
Jack Bauer would also shoot the Lucky Dog. He doesn't believe in free rides.
Posted by: Keith | Sep 19, 2006 4:08:33 PM
Now c'mon, Keith. When Jack has a good day he only shoots people in the kneecap. And wouldn't it be nice to have Nina doing interviews on pit road as Jack drove by?
Posted by: Doug | Sep 19, 2006 4:20:26 PM
You guys all watch too much TV. I don't even know who Jack Bauer is, but if he kills the Lucky Dog I like him.
Posted by: Diane Sadler | Sep 19, 2006 4:32:36 PM
Doug,
Jack doesn't do interviews. But if Jack Bauer does an interview he can say, "Shite." It would be NASCAR afraid to say, "Shite," about it.
Did I mention he'd shoot the Lucky Dog?
Posted by: Keith | Sep 19, 2006 4:35:00 PM
Oh, please don't compare Jack Bauer to Jeff Gordon. Jeff would really need to keep his helmet on and would also need body armor.
I would also hate to be standing on pit road if Jack went by and saw Nena or Nina (however you spelled her name).

Keith, when I heard Tonys interview, all I could say is "what is he thinking"?When I thought about it awhile,I felt it was a jab at Nascar and the chase. He is a great driver and that is what he should stick to doing.
Posted by: SHORT LADY | Sep 19, 2006 4:41:49 PM
Short Lady,
Yes he is a great driver and I agree he should stick to that. But, it's a bit hard I guess when 50 mics get thrown in your face. He'll forget he said it and be back to racing hard this weekend.
Posted by: Keith | Sep 19, 2006 5:02:24 PM
Why doesn't NASCAR consider Tony's suggestion? If a non-Chaser takes out Junior in the final ten, I'll bet we'll see it come under consideration. No offense Junior fans.
Why not? They've already perverted the championship beyond what any sane person could expect.
