All eyes on ARCA Friday night at 'Dega
By Mike Harper
What do Juan Pablo Montoya, Chip Ganassi, Rusty Wallace, Richard Childress, Ken Schrader and Mike Wallace have in common? All are involved in the Food World 250, ARCA RE/MAX Series event at Talladega Superspeedway on Friday evening.
Call me crazy, but I believe the eyes of the racing world will be on this ARCA event. I wouldn’t be at all surprised if this SPEED televised event doesn’t pull the highest ratings ever for an ARCA event. Not just because viewers will see a number of talented developmental drivers participating Friday night, but to watch former F1 driver and Indianapolis 500 winner Juan Pablo Montoya take his first step in preparing for his leap into the NASCAR Nextel Cup Series by racing in this event.
Montoya will take over for Casey Mears next season in the Nextel Cup Series. Chip Ganassi, owner of Mears’ No. 42 Dodge has decided to prepare Montoya by entering him into the last two ARCA events of the season, Talladega and Iowa.
After testing at Talladega in late September, Montoya was discussing his first time racing a stock car at Talladega and told the media, "The car really moves around a lot more from what I am used to, but after a while you just get the hang of it. It is a lot of fun, and a lot of technique. I think experience will help a lot in the car knowing when to run high and when to run low. I am getting there, but it is going to take a little bit of time."
Here’s my take on Montoya. I believe he is an extra talented race car driver. One of the best! I wouldn’t be surprised if he won Friday night, because lets face it, he will be in some of the best equipment, if not the best, on the track. That said, I do look for him to make a mistake. He may not cause the big one, but he is shifting through the gears in a stock car, under racing conditions for the first time. He will also need to hit pit road under racing conditions, in a stock car for the first time and if he falls behind he’ll need to work his way back to the front, under racing conditions in a stock car for the first time.
Montoya will have many first times in a stock car, but throw Talladega racing in the mix and we just stirred in a ton of pressure! The good news is he’s starting on the front row next to the Pole winner Bobby Gerhart.
In a column by ThatsRacin.com’s own Jim Utter, Montoya said, "I will probably get caught up a couple times making the wrong moves, but that's part of the learning curve."
I believe the learning curve will be the reason he won’t win this race. But if he does win, it will be an amazing story talked about in the coming days.
Other drivers to keep a watchful eye on are Steve Wallace, Richard Childress driver Timothy Peters, Ken Schrader Racing’s Kelly Bires, NASCAR veteran Mike Wallace driving for James Finch and Dodge Motorsports’ developmental driver Chase Miller.
The ARCA rookie class has been strong this season behind Blake Bjorklund and he’s followed by Ryan Foster, Ryan Howard, Brett Rowe and Justin Allgaier. Any of these drivers could shine on Friday night.
But let’s not forget the ARCA veterans. Current points leader and seven-time ARCA champion Frank Kimmel is always a threat to win at the superspeedways. Bobby Gerhart and Billy Venturini will make the event interesting as well. Throw in many of the ARCA young-guns and I guarantee the Food World 250 will be a great race to watch.
In this week’s Flip-Flops found on my web site and aired each Thursday night on RaceTalkRadio.com, I picked Bobby Gerhart and Mike Wallace to Flip to Victory Lane. While I feel extremely good about those picks, I also picked Todd Bowsher to Flip. Excuse the plug, but Bowsher’s No. 21 Ford will carry my web site’s decals on the top part of the C-Pillar on the car! If you get a chance, look for the Spin Out Zone (SOZ) decals on the No. 21 and cheer extra hard for the Bowsher team!
Needless to say, I’m extremely excited about Friday night. The race will be televised at 8pm EST on SPEED.

Excellent thoughts on Montoya Mike, I agree with you. He has a big learning curve ahead of him and all eyes in the RV lot at Talladega will be on him. The Cup guys will be looking to see if they can trust him in the draft at Daytona in February.

Thanks for the heads up on the race time.I was planing on leaving work early to see the race. The ARCA races this year have been really good. They do have some promising rookies.Let's see if Montoya is one of them.

I had forgotten about the ARCA race. Montoya should do well in the draft. I'd wonder more how much he'll like the contact aspect of Stock Car racing. It is something they try to avoid in F-1. Pit stops will also be a big adjustment for an F-1 driver.

I am soo looking forward to this! I do agree he may not win, but just to see Montoya race again is worth it. The race will not be transmitted live though...
As a Montoya fan I am thrilled to have him in NASCAR. There will be a lot more coverage, and he will be much more accessible.
Good luck JP !

Mike, I've been waiting for your piece on the ARCA race. I can always count on you to keep us up to date.
I believe you are correct. There will be a lot of viewers who would not normally watch an ARCA race, mostly thanks to Juan Pablo Montoya. (The new surface has me curious as well.)
No matter what happens to Montoya tonight, he will be mentioned during the F1 race at Suzuka Japan this weekend. Probably about 1 a.m. Saturday morning. (Unless F1 qualifying is tape delayed.) I didn't watch practice, but I bet someone has already mentioned Talladega.
While I love Bob Varsha and David Hobbs, they have been kinda hard on Juan Pablo moving to NASCAR. The last I remember was this past week at the China Grand Prix; Hobbs said something to the effect: "how humbling a sport - from McLaren-Mercedes and the European circuits, to ARCA and Talladega, Alabama."
"Humbling" I don't believe is the word. I think Montoya is a person that wants to race. He doesn't care what or where. He saw an opportunity and he took it. I think it's fantastic and I applaud him for doing so.
He definitely has a learning curve to deal with in a stock car, but I think he'll do better than some drivers currently in Nextel Cup.
I'm not worried about pit stops. He did plenty during his days in the IRL, and did very well at it I might add. Alot is talent and instinct and I think he has both.
I wouldn't be surprised if the 42 is the highest finishing team at Ganassi in 2007, for more reasons than just JPM.
Mike, good luck with the 21 Ford tonight. I'll keep an eye out for it and cheer you on.
But I'll also be keeping my eye on Cale Gale. There's something about that kid that impresses me, other than the fact he's named after Cale Yarborough.
Enjoy the race!

Keith
Was it JPM that said "If you touch wheels in F1,you're an animal"?
Shirley
Sorry about Cale Gale(I like him also),but he quit his job on Monday.Mike Wallace is now in the car.
I also think AJ qualified pretty well for the truck series. It will be fum to watch him,he's in one of those fast Toyotas.

Good Post Mike
For way to many years I have followed the
ARCA Series. Many of our Cup drivers got
their start in ARCA.
And the newness of a repaved Dega, and the
first race for JPM makes this very exciting

SL, I wondered what happened. When I saw the line up on NASCAR Live Gale wasn't listed.
Thanks for the info.
I'll miss part of the Truck race "live" cuz it's homecoming in Gainesville, and the Gators play LSU at 3:30. Plus, Game Day is going to be outside The Swamp. So racing will take a back seat for the afternoon.
But I agree, AJ could show some promise this weekend. It should be fun to watch.

I don't care if he's the next coming of Sr. (Oops, that would make him Dale Gale)No kid needs to go through life with a rhyming name.
Ahhhh, yes, "humbling" is the proper term for going from the experience of Uber rich high tech F-1 to "down home" ARCA. But, if we're to throw modifiers at Mr. Montoya we should add persistent and dedicated. He's starting the sport exactly where he should...at step 1. Persistence and dedication will get him where he wants to go...Cup Racing. LOL, Oh, the humanities. I just had a mental Pic of Fatback drinking a flute of champagne pinkie extended and Montoya opening a bud with a shop rag...It could happen!
Trucker makes a good point. With Cup drivers dominating Busch, Owners using reality/developement shows, and some others using their johnson to find talent...ARCA remains an excellent choice to look for that new up and coming driver!

Hey Mike,
Good read.
It will be fun to watch the new blood. It seemed to me that Juan already had his "humbling" when he went to F1 and did not take over.

Well JPM showed us what he could do.They say rhe cream rises to the top.It was a good race and I almost thought they were going to avoid the big one.

Juan looked pretty good. He pretty much got the whole buffet of Super Speedway restrictor plate racing. Up front, middle, rear and back up front at the end. He handled himself well and showed good driving skills. He even did bump drafting on the younger Wallace. I think this guy brings much more skill and entertainment to our sport than the over-hyped, non-winner who looks good in a skirt (debateable)ever could.

The race was great.Congrats to Frank
Kimmel,to me him being a seven time ARCA
Champ and to win his first Super Speedway
win was SUPER.
If JPM had finished back in the top 20 and
a lap down,it would have been a big success
but to get in the top 5 was just awsome.
Last night the Speed Crew mentioned a list
of Indianapolis 500 winners who had raced
in ARCA and 1 name stuck out
Johny Parson's jr.......did that bring back memories........(bet #5 remembers him)
Posted by: trucker | Oct 7, 2006 11:40:20 AM
Trucker I don't recall Johnny Parson's....Benny Parson's on the other hand is a cinch...and his brother...who I can't recall his name. And I think Frank Kimmel is about to claim Title # 8!
