Observations through 5 year old eyes.
By Mark Young
Michigan International Speedway is my home track and each June race we make our annual pilgrimage to partake in the event. The fact that it is Father's Day makes it even more fun to some as Dad's take their children to the race with them. This year it was my middle child Zachary's turn to go to the race with me and I made it a point to pay more attention to the little things he saw that excited him, and see things from the perspective of a five year old. Let's just say that this race was the most exciting event I have been to ever because I lived it through him.
Now let me set this up a little bit. Zachary is five years old, loves racing, but has never been to a race of any kind. He knows the majority of the driver's numbers as well as their sponsors so he is pretty knowledgeable regarding the basics of the sport. We bought Zac a disposable camera and let him take pictures at will so he could make a display for school in the fall.
Zac couldn't believe how big everything was, specially the track. As we walked toward the tunnel he kept saying "WOW" about how tall the bleachers were. After walking under the tunnel, and playing
echoes for a minute or two" he looked around and yelled "COOL!!!" Zac was like a kid in a candy store on pit road. He would yell out the driver or sponsor he saw as we walked past the pit stalls. We had to stop and get our picture taken in front of Junior's war wagon, Zac couldn't understand why Junior wasn't there......
Our next stop on pit road was the Fed Ex stall to visit with TR.com blogger De
nnis Terry from "Over The Wall". I have e-mailed with Dennis before but never met him so that was cool. Dennis was awesome and showed Zachary around the pit stall and then let us sit on the wagon while Dennis and I talked racing. Their stall was right next to the roadway that the cars were pushed down to get to pit road from the garage. We have several nice pictures of the back ends of some cars and front ends of other cars as Zac clicked off a dozen or shot
s from on top the pit box.
At MIS you are allowed to walk out onto the track near the start/finish line when you have pit passes. Zac couldn't believe how steep the front stretch was!! I got a picture of him doing a snow angel on the checkered line, I am going to send it to Kurt Busch because that boy needs lessons. We stood there for a bit and I watched his eyes circle the track taking it all in.
After the pit road experience and a long walk back to the car to join our group for lunch and to pack our coolers we made it to our seats in the 6th row. Zac swears Junior was waving at him during the parade laps in the pickup trucks during introductions and thanks to the fans around us in the seats they insured him that was exactly what happened. The fly-by scared the crap out of him (I didn't tell him what was coming) but loved the fireworks and seeing all the teams lined up in formation along pit road.
As the race started I didn't even look at the cars going by, I was too busy watching this little boy jump up and down on the bleachers screaming at the cars going by. I walked him down against the fence during a restart so he could get a true sense of the speed and what 180+ mph was like. At lap 100 I looked down to check on him to find him sound asleep!! A special thanks to my friends from Windsor, Canada sitting behind us who helped me keep him in the shade and cool while sleeping. Zac woke up in time to see the end and was a bit sad that it was over.
I know this blog was a bit long and not quite like the stuff I ordinarily write following a race but this wasn't an ordinary race for me. This was by far the best day of NASCAR racing I have ever had. To see the true excitement and anticipation in my son's eyes as he watched things going on around him I realized that I need to pay a little more attention to the details of a race and not so much on the glamor and glitz the sport has become. I hope all of you fathers out there enjoyed your special day as much as I did.

Sounds like you both had a great time Mark. Forgive me if you see my blog saying the race was boring!
Michigan was my first race in 2002. Matt Kenseth won it. I'll never forget experiencing the cars thundering by for real. It's awesome.

Great post...I too have a five year old named Zach. He loves racing too...but has never been to one. I have wanted to take him along sometime...but have always hesitated, thinking he might not like it, or that it might be a real pain trying to keep an eye on him with so many people around. After reading your post though.. I can't wait to take him and see his reactions to everything. Thanks for opening up my eyes a little for me. I'm sure my Zach will thank you too!!

LOL, sometimes it takes a child to make us remember why we like racing and things at race tracks.
LOL, Zac, I'm glad you got to have a great day with Dad. Who, btw, will save and print this post, for an album. This will be used to embarrass you later in life. LOL, what can I say? We're parents, we do these things. However, on your behalf, I've fallen asleep at NASCAR events before and nothing beats a great nap.

Jeff,
Find a local track...The price is cheap and you can test the waters.

Terrific post, Mark! Absolutely wonderful! The pictures help. It's always special when you can put a face to a name, as with you and Dennis. It somehow humanizes this a lot. I'm on a music list as well and have met several fans of our favorite artist over the years; it is always a real treat to see the person behind the typed words.
Thanks again for your story.

Mark,
what a great post, and to think that it was his first race makes it so special. My freind, I know you love Nascar, but take him to a drag strip, or open wheel race, show him what "Thatsracin" is all about.

LOL, Trucker always has to plug the dragstrips. I'm not sure Zac is ready for the Force girls. Heck, I'm not sure I am...LOL

Mark
I believe there is a little bit of a 5 year old in all of us.Over the years I have seen people go to the track for the first time and I allways say,"get ready to fall in love with this sport".I took my kids to the track at a young age and they still love it.
Thanks for sharing!

Mark, this is about as far removed from sponsorship lawsuits as we can get. We debate that issue and other topics, but you nailed why we are race fans in the first place. Thanks.

Short Lady,
I have two of them in me!
Posted by: Keith | Jun 19, 2007 7:03:33 PM
Thats Awesome Mark, Like I told ya 'bout my first race track expierience at Flat Rock, Dixie Speedway...coulda been MT Clemens, all I remeber it was dirt and Sprint Cars! Like Short lady said we all need to look at thing with 5 year old eyes! Growing up in the sport, ya tend to take too much for granted!...Fast forward 25 years I fell asleep in my racecar waiting for the Late Model feature to end...the Pit Steward had to wake me...Was a good place to escape from everyone!

I think the way we were as kids is why we resent the changes that aren't for the better in the sport. It's losing some innocence.

Mark, what a fantastic story! It was a memorable day for you, but an even more memorable day for your son - bet he's already asking when he can go again!
I'm reminded of my granddaughter when she was nearly 5. She "raced" her 3-wheeler around the patio, informing me on each lap which driver she was passing. "I just went by Bonnie LaBonnie!" "Oops, Rusty Wallet ran out of gas". "Jeffie beat me again!". Those memories are now a part of her Memory Book and we share them whenever she comes for a visit. Of course, she's now old enough to get embarrassed over her butchering of some great drivers' names! Kids are priceless, as are the memories they create for us.
As for you, Mark, you can do another article like this one anytime - everyone loves 'em!

Thank you all for your thoughts. I was a bit worried that this would seem selfish and an advantage of writer's privilege but your comments make me feel better.

This is what it is all about. Having a good time at the track. To bad we have to grow up. My first race was at South Bend Motor Speedway Back in the early 50's. You get hooked at a young age and they have you the rest of your life. See you at the lanes.

That was so delightful, Mark. I was in awe the first time I went to the track but I was much older than 5. I've never forgotten it and either will Zac. I suspect you won't either plus you'll always have a buddy on race day. Thank you for sharing your memorable day with us and please feel free to do it again.

Mark,
Happy belated Fathers Day! Sounds like you and Zachary had a great day at the track. My Son loves the tracks too, it's a family adventure everytime we go. Tell Zachary we enjoyed the pictures and thanks for sharing the day the two of you had together. You will remember it for the rest of your life, and so will he!

Thanks for sharing, Mark, that was great! :)
Also, he's got such great taste in drivers for such a little fella. ;)

Enjoyed your post Mark. Anything that you do with your kids is extra special. I have a few more miles on my odometer, but I still go to Darlington with my youngest. When my grandson is old enough, she'll lose her ticket.
This is more fun discussing than corporate greed.

Mark you made me cry. This is great.
Maybe Zachary should read all this and post his side of it. I would love to see what he has to say.

Thanks Diane, I got a little wound up and emotional when I started reading these comments last night. Thank you all.

How utterly wonderful!
If you have the chance to show the snow angel picture to Kurt I bet he'd be thrilled to see it.

I can't beleive you knuckleheads. I have been watching NASCAR since the early 70's. I was seven years old when my father took me to see the Mountain Dew 250 in Hickory. Richard Petty passed Bobby Issac on the last lap with his infamous Hemi to win, and send the crowd into delerium. Even at seven years old I knew something was up. To see how far it has come in that time is almost unbeleivable. To add a road coarse track like Sonoma and have an international talent (wether you like him or not) like Juan Pablo to drive a hell of a race and win was great. At this point and time in the history of racing there has never been the assembly of talent, money, brains and competition as there is in NASCAR right now. It is the elite racing series in the world. Who could have predicted it. Just shut up and revell in the racing, because you might not ever see it again in your lifetime.
