Thanks Dale
By Mark Young
The other day I watched the 1995 Goody's 500 from Bristol, Tennessee on ESPN Classic. That was the race where Dale Earnhardt chased down Terry Labonte and wrecked him sending Terry to victory lane with a smashed up car. It was very cool to see the old cars race, the familiar names next to also familiar numbers but there was one car out there that was quite familiar but the driver behind the wheel was not who I thought it was. The car was the #28 Havoline Ford fielded by Robert Yates and the driver was Dale Jarrett. I had completely forgotten that after Davey Allison died Dale drove the #28. That race had me thinking about the teams Dale Jarrett had driven for in his career and it dawned on me that this is Dale's last points race in NASCAR as a driver.
I spent all week trying to figure out what to write about and I had my mind made up to tell Tony Stewart to Just Shut Up. Not because of what he said about the tires at Atlanta but how he said it. Then after watching that race and pondering Dale Jarret's past as well as his future I changed my mind. Dale Jarrett has been a driver that has done it all. He won the 1999 Winston Cup, he has won Daytona, but I think more importantly he was won the respect of his peers and the allegiance of thousands of fans.
You couldn't ask for a better person to put in the television booth to explain the happenings during a race weekend than Dale Jarrett. He is intelligent, well spoken, and respected in the garage area. His father Ned was a fantastic TV announcer for a very long time and I am sure Dale is going to do just as well.
I could have sworn while watching the pre-race coverage on FOX yesterday that Darrell Waltrip was retiring after the race instead of Dale. I think it was super cool for Mountain Dew to give Darrell his old race car, in fact that is REALLY cool. However, why couldn't that have taken place in two weeks at Martinsville? I would have rather watched Dale receive all of the farewell gifts and awards that he received instead of dealing with more Darrell.
Thanks Dale for being a gentleman, thanks for racing clean, thanks for showing people that nice guys don't always finish last. You may have finished your final points race four laps down but that doesn't mean we didn't notice you or appreciate all you have done.

Mark,
I wish he could have gotten a better result at Bristol, but he's had a full career, and another coming up as an announcer.
Favorite memory has to be Dad calling the win over Earnhardt in the 500.

Close Mark, Yates hired "Swervin' Irvan" to drive the Legndary #28...In 1993 Dale drove for Joe Gibbs Racing in the #18 Interstate Batteries car where He and Dale Earnhardt put on the "Dale and Dale" show, in 1995 DJ signed with Yates, I never really consider myself that big of a DJ fan, But I do have a lot of his diecast, and He's the one of the reason I moved to Hickory...I just hope we can get him to race the UPS Toyota Tundra before the season ends

#5 I rewound my DVR at least half a dozen times, DJ was driving the #28.........I will verify but I know it was him.

Racing reference is a god-send. 1995 Goody's Headache Powder 500. Night race at Bristol had Terry Labonte win, Dale Earnhardt 2nd, and Dale Jarret3rd listed car was #28, sponsor Havoline.

Aawww, how sweet!...and I agree.
But, IMO...'bout frickin' time. DJ should have retired 5 years ago. The last meaningful thing he did on-track was stop in the middle of the track at Loudon and intitute the "no racing back" rule which bore the incredibly assinine "Free Pass" rule.
I'm not saying that I don't appreciate all of Dale's accomplishments, or what he gave the sport, or the fact that the sport would not be the same without him.
But, at some point, Kyle, Mark, Bill, and I hate to say it, Ken need to realize that the time to hang it up has arrived.

Kenny could go race a truck and win races. Kyle can continue his wonderful work with the VJG Camp. Mark can go teach his kid how to race and Bill can go do what he was doing before the top 35 deemed his services viable again.
It unfortunately time for some of us to let go of our favorites that used to be on top of the deal......

I also loved watching and listening as Ned called the last few laps of the 500. Unfortunately, all they had time for this weekend was about the last 10 seconds. Remember the part where they showed Ned's wife hiding her face and Ned telling her it would be OK? Great stuff.
As to the "they oughta retire" issue, you guys are COLD!! I give them the benefit of the doubt, though. Guys like DJ and Schrader aren't exactly driving for Hendrick or Roush or Gibbs, y'know. They bring experience to lesser teams so those teams can figure out what they have to do. It lets the team trot out a fairly well-known name and face to would-be sponsors. Would Little Debbie get all hot for Mike Bliss or Marcos Ambrose? Who?? Ken Schrader, though, can charm a roomful of Debbies. It lets the drivers continue to do what they love - race. Kyle Petty is pretty candid about it. He knows his team isn't very competitive, but he loves going to the track and being around race people, so why quit? No one forces anyone to hire Elliot and Schrader, so who's to complain?
