Every Woman Owns a Black Dress

By Keith Ott

The Black Dress (BD) is imprinted within every woman’s DNA, and, while Darlington is technically a race track, she is every bit as fickle as any woman who dons the BD. The rewards and consequences of the BD are pretty much the same for us males, or, in this case, drivers.  Bring your best manners, and your best lines, and you may get a smile. Let your eye wander or think you’re in charge of her, and, well, you get my point. The Lady in Black will have her way.

The racing turned out to be great. Certain things contributed to the racing, and should be acknowledged for contributing to such a good show.

  • The track pavers: They did an excellent job. No woman wants a wrinkled dress, and this one was as smooth as silk.
  • Good Year: Not oft on my good list. They brought the right shoes to this dance. They get credit when they mess up, so they deserve credit when it works out right.
  • The Maintenance crew (They have about 14): The track looked great. Those guys who had to repaint the walls, in what must have been a long night, deserve an attaboy. How thankless a task was that?

Back to the event:

The race coverage was decent. It’s a nostalgic type of track, so I’m pretty sure we all got the point that they used to use (2)2x4’s in the door, ad infinitum. But, if anyone missed it, in olden days they had (2)2x4’s on the right side to brace it up. Now we have Dow foam to do it…Everyone on the same page? Other than that they didn’t bother me so I guess they did ok. Oh, as an aside, I did like the history lesson on the #28 Fred Lorenzen’s car. I liked it so much I looked him up. Turns out he was an original NASCAR character. The Golden Boy; first to win over 100K in a season, and a movie star to boot. He starred as himself in an independently produced racing movie, “Speed Lovers.” To summarize the flick: Its old James Bond mated with “Back in the Day,” race clips. Girls in bathing suits, and car crashes sums it up. Here’s the trailer… http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QfjoMRsCtII

The Racing:

There were two races going on all night, driver vs. track, driver vs. driver, and, okay, if I count Biffle, I have to add driver vs. car.

  • Nobody won vs. the track. Some took fewer lumps than others, and some wish they’d never met her, but everyone got at least a taste of the wall.
  • Driver vs. driver is harder to call. Some were good for short runs, some for long runs, but only one was good when it earned points. Kyle had enough brakes, and I was hoping he wouldn’t, to be top dog that night. I bet he has a bigger brake package next time.
  • Biffle vs. car is an easy call, Car - 1, Biffle - 0. If that car doesn’t mess up, he’s takin’ home the bacon. He’s got to be frustrated with that, but I think it’s a bit early to have him sitting in a Gibbs car.

Asides:

How many people are needed at Gibbs to discuss lug nut glue? Well the obvious answer is about 9. That’s how many they had out there.

If Darlington keeps with the improvements, then the Mothers Day race is going to stay.

Now let’s get ready for some All Star racing! I love non point races.

And a don't forget about the black devices for the underside! Or is it still missing?

It was a good race.

Diane,

It was a good race. Plenty of action. I don't think Darlington has a black under-device. Doesn't matter I'm too old to remember what to do with it.

It was a good race. But, I expected nothing less from Darlington. (I have been there to a mother's day race.)

I also was hoping KYB did not have enough brakes. I'm curious what they found when they did the post race inspection. He hit the walls so many times I thought for sure he would knock himself out of the race. But, alas no such luck. The kid can drive.

There were a few cars that were lucky or good enough to not get a Darlington stripe. My heart went out to Biffle. He had the car to beat until it went up in smoke. Also, what's up with the lug nuts on the RFR cars?

I don't see Darlington losing her one race now. The owners have really worked hard to make improvements to the track. The race we attended was the race they spent most of the night welding the seats on the back stretch because someone broke through them. I would love to go back. If you get a chance to go, make sure you take time to visit the museum/hall of fame. It's not that big, but it's amazing.

Hmmm Chief, I kinda missed the "Ol Familar" Lady in Black, Watching the NW race Friday night I couldn't help but think "Is THIS Lowes Motor Speedway or Darlington from the various camera shots?...All in all I thought it was a very entertaining race, BUT give it some time and the Ol Girl will be snatching victories away in a heart beat!
Sammy, Kyle's brake issue was one that wasn't really anticipated with the re-paving, with the new pavement speeds increased dramatically...AND it raced like a true Super Speedway, but the brake package was too small and not enought ducting and the end result was somewhat incredible, I'm glad that the track tightend up so Kyle could dial some front brake back in and overcome some pitroad adversity...With Kyles lug nut issue it was an "Glue" or Gorilla snot problem, and unfortunate that someone got an Ass chewing in the heat of the moment(I've seen guys lose there jobs for less)...Over at RFR, I can't say with certainty but alot of prepearation goes into "tires and Lugs" with filing them so they can damn near spin on effortlessly...someone might have gotten overzelous, Buy hey..."That's Racin"

Sammy,

My experience was with the old Darlington long before they ever dreamed of a Mother's Day race. The seating and accommodations were less than fan enticing. I'm glad they realized, after a kick in the nuts, that you have to spend money to make money.

#5,

The site should add,"When a lost lug nut puts you at the back of the pack and you still win, that's racin'," to it's definition.

I thought it was one of the better Darlington races in recent memory!! The #28 story was very interesting indeed and I thought it was even better to see the car doing so well.

Look out for sparks, bent sheet metal, and hot tempers this weekend at Lowe's. I hope I can find SPEED on a TV in Cancun!!

Have a great race weekend my friends....

Mark,

My Cancun ticket didn't come??? Are ya sure it's in the mail? Yeah, like you're looking to watch NASCAR in Cancun. I hear Mexican divorce lawyers are cheap.

Did you watch the "Speed Lovers" trailer? It's probably good he had a racing career.

Posted by: Keith | May 15, 2008 9:24:04 AM

Keith, your comment about Mark watching the race from Cancun reminds me of why I like sports so much: we can live and die with our teams/drivers, etc., but if you're someplace like Cancun, the game or race just becomes so totally unimportant! I have missed the last three races due to social gigs and a road trip to Arizona, and y'know what? I had so much fun that I didn't regret missing the race in the least. I missed the last two races last year while on a cruise, and it didn't bother me one bit.

Mark, enjoy Cancun!

Doug,

That's especially true for this event. It's a non-points event so where they finish doesn't matter. DVR it and enjoy the Majito's on the beach. Racing life will still be here when you get back.

Hey Keith,

Well done. It's a shame that the track could not have move the wall back to row 1.

Good that the event was well attended. The "Lady in Black", provided as good of show as possible. Maybe a diamond-cutting, extend the apron 10ft and progressive banking is in the future. lol.

A non-points breather sounds good bout' now. What a great season to be a race fan.

Larry,

I don't think I want to tinker with the track much. The hard turns and the pinch give the track it's character.

Saw some of the pit competition last night. It's fun to watch the guys who usually only get noticed at the track for mistakes, get some star time. Congrats to the Vickers Crew.

Keith - Good comment about the pit competition. It was more entertaining than some of the races we've seen this year. The #83 crew was amazing.
