Newman's leaving.......is Truex Or RCR Next?
By Mark Young
Well the not so big announcement that Ryan Newman would not be returning to Penske Racing next season was made today. No big surprise as there have been rumors flying around about Ryan for quite some time. Is it ironic that he waited until after Tony Stewart announced that he was made that he was buying 50% of Haas-CNC Racing? I don't think so. As you might recall I predicted, based on things I learned at Michigan, that both events would happen. The next domino to fall is either going to be RCR's announcement of who their next driver is going to be or Martin Truex Jr's announcement that he is leaving DEI. Perhaps it will be both.....at the same time.
We know that Stewart-Haas is going to be two cars, maybe three. Will Tony keep Scott Riggs? Will he grab a free agent? I predicted Truex to go there along with Bass Pro Shops, that may or may not happen with Rumors of Newman going there instead. Stewart, Newman, and Truex would make a pretty stout lineup if you ask me..........
So we have RCR with an opening (I would love to see Montoya jump ship and go there) and Sewart-Haas perhaps with one, maybe two. With a handful of drivers that are going to need a ride and only a few quality seats out there I think we are going to see a very spirited game of musical chairs.
Hang on fans, this is just the beginning.

Ok, Here goes...Penske announces today that Newman will not remain with the organization...It will be announced at Indy the Stewart/Haas Racing signed fellow Indiana driver Ryan Newman to take over in their 2nd car with Matt Borland as his crew chief. In turn David Stremme will take over the #12 car at Penske. Casey Mears will be intoduced as Richard Childress Racing 4th Driver. And Martin Truex will remain at DEI, and should take some Law Classes in the off season...Tsk Tsk Tsk...the only missing piece of the puzzle is where will Reed Sorenson land? Things that make you go Hmmmmm

Montoya to RCR? Hadn't thought about that but it would certainly add a little spice to that line up. Does anyone know what his contract calls for in terms of time? Is he a free agent after this year or does he have an out? RCR and Childress just might be what he needs to take his game up to the next level. Ganassi racing is useless. Newman and Stewart will make a pretty good line up if that comes true.

#5, what I like about your post is Stremme getting a good ride. He seems like a down-to-earth and talented guy, albeit not a media star.
Mark, BIG points for the guess of Montoya going to RCR. I love it! Maybe then Ganassi could bring Franchitti back to get his NASCAR wheels under him. As for your speculation, Jayski's chart doesn't have a contract date for JPM.

Oops - my bad. Jayski's 2009 team chart (I had only looked at 2008) says his contract is through "2009+," whatever that means. The entry: "Montoya was rumored in mid 2008 as wanting to leave, but he said he was with Ganassi long term, the #20 car was one rumored ride, but seems unlikely. No word if Texaco/Havoline will return with Wrigley [Big Red and Juicy Fruit] as co-sponsors, but have nor heard they were leaving either."
Sorry for the mistake and the double post.

I was just throwing something out there that on a personal note I would like.
I have met Stremme before and he is a good guy that just needs a good break.
#5, I hadn't heard anything about Reed.....

I would like to see Montoya jump ship and go home.
I thought that Truex was close to re-signing with DEI....just something related on the pre-race show saturday.
Don't really see Newman being a good performance asset to any organization; call me cynical.

$.02/ Newman in my mind would best fit at RCR. But that seems very unlikely if rumors have any weight. Penske for Stremme is a career killer. The guy has never had a chance in hell with the equipment hes been in. Penske is considered a top tier team and Newman and Busch are only clinging to a top teen points position. Taking this ride will only help solidify a bad image of his talents.

The horoscopes of Stewart, Newman and Truex have all been showing change and overlaying of aspects with each other since Feb. I have said all along they will all be on the same team.
Aspect's also show that Kyle Busch may be moving on Silly Season 2009...

Bob - Because Stremme won't have many (if any) options in Cup other than Penske, IMO he doesn't have any choice but to take that ride if it's offered to him. It would be great if he could get the #20 car or the 4th RCR car, but that's very, very unlikely. So I hope he's offered the #12 ride. Stremme is a nice looking, well spoken young man. So IMO he would be good for almost any sponsor. He just hasn't had a chance to shine yet.

1. Newman is going to Stewart/Hass racing. Done deal
2.Truex will be in that 12 car before next season. No doubt.
3. Casey Mears will be in that #33 car. if he could not cut it with hendrick then how????
4.Joey Lagono will be in that #20 car. Done deal.
5. Kind of a wild card; Look for Bill davis, gibbs, and Hass to each expand their fleet by 1car. That would make it very intersting to see who fills those rides.
Stay tuned.

Hey Mark,
It is unfortunate that it came to this for Ryan and Penske.
Predicting Ryan to go with Tony is not exactly crystal ball stuff. Fellow Hoosier and Borland in the wait.
Now we will find out how much money Ryan has made. If he has enough, he will go race for Tony. If he "needs" a championship, look for him in the 20 or 33.
Wherever he lands, it will be my new 2nd favorite team.

Larry, I have been told that Ryan makes a third of what Kurt makes at Penske. It doesn't matter what the amount is, it is no different than those of us that have "normal" jobs. We look for the best money and the best opportunity.

OFF TOPIC slightly - I was bored and decided to read some of the other blogs at TRcom. One in particular leads me to say this:
Thanks to all who post here for being able to have quiet, coherent discussions about Cup racing and the people in it, and for having such discussions mostly free of illiteracy and profanity. (BTW, I have no problem with profanity, but only in certain contexts, and this isn't one.)
So Keith, Mark, David, and all of you, THANKS!!

i never get bored reading blogs.
but, then i don't read the boring ass ones anyway.
since you don't mind profanity so much , it must be the fucking illiteracy part that really bothers you ??

Hey Mark,
If that is true, about Ryan's pay I'd be surprised. It seemed to me that the Capt. buying out Don & Rusty was for Ryan. Must be missing the forrest for the trees.. or something like that.
It is curious how Penske and Ganny can compete at such a high level in open wheel, and remain 2nd tier in Cup. That's Racin'.

Doug,
There's a time and a place for everything. Sometimes you use the stick, but sometimes using the carrot gets a message across better.
DJ,
LOL, I call it Kat's "Open Forum," and I do visit over there, and comment, now and then. It's her Kingdom (Queendom) to run, and she does a great job.
All,
No post this week because the power supply in my computer let the smoke out. To clarify that, electrical gear runs on smoke, it's a naval fact, if you see the smoke getting away, then chances are something bad let the smoke out. I could have been a factor by trying to overclock a core2duo to 4+Ghz with cross-fired video cards, but more likely it was just a defective power supply. Yep, I'm sticking with bad, inadequate, pos PS. Indy picks...Stewart, Jr., Busch.
Mark,
Thanks for taking up the slack.

Hey, it's all a question of style and personal preference. I prefer one style, but different strokes, etc. I looked at Kathy's blog and do see that she gets a lot of action over there. That's good.
Exile: I say the same thing under my breath several times every day!
DJ: Thanks for the invite. Who knows, you may see me over there some day. I have been given no reason to feel unwelcome, that's for sure.
Keith: did you have to take a fire extinguisher to it and spray white crap all over the place?
Posted by: Doug in CA | Jul 18, 2008 12:12:20 PM
Doug,
Hell no. I covered all the holes and tried to keep the smoke in. Then I ran out of beer and had to make a beer run. The damn smoke got out while I was gone.
Posted by: Keith | Jul 18, 2008 1:32:13 PM
Well, Keith, at least you have your priorities straight! Contain the fire, get beer. And do NOT, under ANY circumstances, pour beer on the fire to put it out. That's a waste of beer.
Posted by: Doug in CA | Jul 18, 2008 3:39:17 PM
Doug,
LOL, haven't been around many senior navy people have you? A beer is only wasted if it doesn't complete it's assigned task. Were that task to be putting out a fire, then carry on shipmate, well done.
You, who's home track has been the subject of many a review by me, might help me here for the next post. Where's the racing? LOL, I still think Fontana sucks, but what has happened to the racing. My email works. Send your thoughts.
