Things I think about Fontana
By Keith Ott
1: Broadcast
– I’m two sided on this one. Part of me
thinks the guys in the booth need to get paid extra for having the ability to
stay awake and at least try to entertain the TV audience. The other part of me hates that Darryl’s
nasal twang woke me up more times than I can count. Did everyone catch the lame attempt to
persuade us that ticket sales were surging?
“The ticket lines were staggering,” we were told. All I can think is that the track mall must
have a multiplex theater, and a new Harry Potter was secretly screening,
because these people weren’t in the grandstands. As far as the production goes, I’m still
waiting for Fox to grow up and loose the inane graphics. It’s a sporting network, or claims to be, not
the cartoon network. If you have a great
angle, show it. We’ll appreciate it all
the more without a stupid gopher popping up.
And please tell me you did not dig up a little round patch of dirt for
his home. Oh, and if you want to “Crank
it up,” just do it. We have ears, we’ll
notice that also.
2:
Racing – I
wanted to leave this blank, but someone was bound to think I messed up and not
see the sarcasm. What racing? I’m now of the opinion that this track isn’t
even deserving of one race, much less two.
Seems the fans in Cali are voting with their attendance, or lack
thereof, too. The cautions are actually becoming
my favorite parts, because if you rewind and play them at 4X it actually looks
like racing two wide. I even prayed to
seven different incarnations of rain gods to no avail. However, rain or no rain, Cali was a washout.
3: Drivers - Kenseth, Gordon, Johnson, the Busch
Brothers and Biffle had good days. The
rest of the drivers were seldom seen or heard from.
Long story
short, the next Cali race goes on the DVR.
I have better things to do than count how many times a gopher pops up.

You know your in trouble as far as racing(or lack thereof) is concerned when they spend a goodly portion of the prerace show telling you over and over how there is no banking at this track and how it was built for Indy cars. This track and Indianapolis are the same thing. Just a parade of cars going around in a circle with 5 to 6 second gaps between them. Granted there was a few laps of excitement when there was the possiblility of Gordon catching Kenseth, but it soon became obvious he would not and we had 25 laps of formation racing to the end. Looked like we already have that American F1 team!

Hey Keith,
This time the joke is on you. For sure dude, you made this post before the race! This was your Poconap post. While your general obsevations do usually apply, I submit that your mind was made up before raceday.
You are correct on the booth. The ticket comments were lame. We can no longer expect more from DW and Mac than they have to offer. Their practical experience is nil with the new car.
The racing, on the other hand was pretty darn good from my seat. From the comfort of our home, we cannot appreciate 200+ going into turn 1. A good shot of them comming off turn 4, close to the wall is cool. They are on the edge. The racing thru the pack (whatwewereshown) looked pretty intense. There were battles of teammates JJ n' Jeffy, the Busch brothers all while Jr.,Vickers and Biffle came thru the field.
Also, look at those solid finishes by Stremme, Montoya, Root even Mikey. And, not one time did we hear about Sam(spinn'turn2)Hornish. This Stewart thing could be for real?
Now it will be interesting to watch the top 35 as they get closer to that 5th race. The top 12 right now, if it were the 26th race..they'd be in the chase. Would it not be justice to see Matt dominate for 20 races only to lose in the Chase which he is personally responsible for?
Granted, many of the Cali races are not worthy of defending. Not the case this time. Next time, write your post..after the race!
